  1. When I T mentioned the GoFree I thought it was the answer and surprisingly simple too. But it seems to be the way of the world, things are not as simple as I hoped.

I checked with the B & G people here and they told me  the same, I need a B & G  Plotter or Vulcan or similar for the GO Free to work.

My boat has two  B & G  Tritons plus wind gear on top of mast and transducer for depth and speed. One Triton is set to show speed and depth, the other wind information. I have been told the GoFree will not work with this set up.

I think the best answer maybe to go and talk directly with the Navico technical people.

The aim is to get a WiFi signal from the system somehow so I can run some of the fancy apps available on my iPad.

  2.

It is worth noting though, that for the price of a high end Ipad, you can get a pretty decent real plotter - like the B&G Vulcans. These provide proper robustness, waterproofing, Accessory control and interfacing (AP, Music, Race data with startline and laylines etc etc). They have built in wifi and allow control from an IPAD or Andriod device - great Accessories to a real plotter.

     Hi Island Time

Will the WiFi signal from the B & G Vulcan  connect through an IPad and allow me to use some of the fancy software around such as iRegatta from Zifigo. ( (http://www.zifigo.com ).

I start reading up on this stuff and then get bogged down in the NMEA0183 and NMEA2000 jargon and what bit of kit runs with what.

  3. I learned about this the other day  (See info pasted below).

Has anyone in the forum used one of these gadgets?

and what sort of results are they getting?

    The website is

    http://vyacht.net

    WiFi NMEA2000/0183/Seatalk Router

It sends your boat's NMEA 0183, NMEA 2000 and Seatalk and Seatalk NG data to your iPad, Android, smartphone or laptop/PC. The router features a NMEA 0183 output and NMEA 2000 / Seatalk NG as well as up to four NMEA 0183 inputs and and an optional Seatalk 1 input. Wireless network and optional ethernet LAN and WAN ports allow connecting with mostly any end user device. All incoming data is multiplexed. By default data is translated to NMEA 0183 and send to the NMEA 0183 output and via wifi/ethernet. Other data formats are SignalK or raw data format.

This is the 3rd generation of the popular open source device. The router brings marine instrument data to iPad, tablet and on-board computer. It creates a wireless network via a shared access point to distribute your GPS position, AIS and any other information available on the boat network. Multiple clients can connect to the same wireless network.

It got me all fired up - I have visions of picking up data from my B&G kit and doing fancy things with it in my iPad using Regatta from  http://www.zifigo.com

  4. Yes I still have the server, but unfortunately with Nexus stuff I cannot say if it is working the way it should be. An electronics fiddler with time and patience may be able to sort it out.

I have available a full Nexus system and somebody with electronic/electrical skills could well be able to figure it out.

    Available is

    - Masthead wind gear - wireless

    - Through hull transducer - Airmar Triducer

    - Nexus server

    - Nexus NX2 wind

    - Nexus NX2 Speed & Depth

all of varying ages as bits that fail have been replaced.

  5. My two year old Nexus Instruments have stopped working progressively.

First depth, then speed and then wind.

Technical investigations are getting me nowhere.

Has anybody been through this pathway with Nexus Instruments before and found a clever fix?

  6. I purchased one of the expanding caliber type of Rivet Gun from Ullrich Aluminium about 10 years ago. It pulls SS, Monel and Al rivets without a murmur. As an earlier poster said I just make sure I have the correct nozzle size fitted.

  7. "We have a big focus on communication and transparency, and that is why we organise the meetings, publish an annual report, and communicate on our website and emal newsletters - and through Crew.org.nz too. "

Have had a look through the latest annual report but did not see any financial reporting.

Without real financial performance being reported upon, the report is more of an annual magazine.

  8. Where the hell is the berth holders association?

The Westhaven Marina Users Association  has a website  http://www.westhavenmarinausers.org.nz. The website looks to be inactive and out of date.

The Users Association appears to be invisible in their operations and I have looked all over and  see nothing from them that supports the day to day users of the marina, especially when the marina management do really user unfriendly things such as the tags. I have not seen any posts from the Users Association in this forum.

In my view Marina management have forgotten that their salaries and wages are paid by the boat owners who pay marina fees to park their boats at Westhaven. The first question they should be asking everyday is "how can we the Marina Management, make this a better place for our boat owners?"

I think they have lost sight of this and appear to be adopting tactics to make things more awkward, less user friendly and more expensive.

Here is my guess on the next thing designed to up the inconvenience and extract more money from boat owners and their crew. BARRIER ARMS  at the car park entry. Arms activated by the tags. Oh yes..... if you want to park your car so you can go sailing pay $30 for a tag thank you.

    have fun

  9. Nothing since April 2014. Hows this to resurrect the thread......

How many of your crew are happy buying a gate tag at $30ea so that they can go sailing on your boat?

Is this just a money making venture by the marina?  Are they actually trying to discourage people from going sailing?

  10. Here is a clear shot of the sign on the entry to the carparks on the South side of the marina.

In my opinion this style of sign/warning notice is extremely user unfriendly.

    Marina sign.jpg

I think marina management should also put a user friendly sign there too. Saying something like this:-

"If you and your crew are going out in your boat for more than 3 hours visit the marina office to get some long term parking permits."

Do reckon they will do something constructive like this?

  11. Hi all, once again thanks for your feedback. We will attempt to respond to each of the areas that you are concerned about:

The towing of three cars on the weekend

We are sorry that your cars were towed. However, the marina car parking rules are well advertised via signage both on entry and in the carparks themselves and it’s important that we enforce them to ensure that boaties have access to the parks when they need them. In the days when rules were looser, it became much more difficult to get a carpark at all. Like Wild Oats says, the Marina office are very happy to issue temporary carpark permits when needed for situations like this. If you cannot pick them up during business hours you must prearrange them and we will post them to you. If all else fails there are currently no 180 minute restrictions between the marina office and the old launching ramp.

Here is a thought for the Marina management. Something they can do to demonstrate that they have genuine care for the marina users.

[/b]Refund the towing charge to the owners of the three cars that were towed while they were away sailing the Route 66.[/b]

  12. the cyclists and joggers do not pay any marina fees or make any contribution towards the main purpose of the marina.

In my opinion the marina management appear to be on the pathway towards making the marina a user unfriendly place. Why are the marina management putting so much inconvenience on the actual users of the marina, the people who pay the berth rentals and fees?

The cyclists and joggers are nothing but freeloaders on everyone else's dollar. In my view these freeloaders should be discouraged. The current approach appears to be to encourage these people to the detriment of the actual fee paying marina users.

I cannot understand why the marina people do not ask the most important question.. "What can we do to make the marina a better place for the boat owners who pay the fees?". If they then answered this question honestly I am certain that cyclists and joggers would not feature in the result.

  13. The outhaul had worn through the rope casing where it passes through the jam cleat. Replaced the outhaul line. Bit of a mission as at some stage the outhaul line had been blended onto the wire that runs inside the boom. All done in between rain showers.

Started masking the interior varnished mouldings. A sand & varnish job in progress. All done while listening to RWC commentary on the stereo.

    afu.
