  1. Went out to see the Auckland day regatta 2024 on the harbour; only a handful of boats racing, counted only 3 boats in the vintage division and similar in other keelers' division, overall not many boats on the water, non event. Use to be hundreds out in the olden days.

We race up to Mahurangi Friday nite and plenty boats up there.

  2. Hi all,

Been insured with Vero for years, just got this:

"Because your vessel is over 30 years of age the insurer requires the following documentation for their review and acceptance, prior to offering any cover when your policy next renews on 23/12/2024.

    • Current interior and exterior colour photographs
    • An out of water survey (see attached condition report, or Surveyor’s own form) completed by a practising boat builder or marine surveyor, within the last 12 months."

I think it will cover gas certification, rig inspection, keel  etc..., not sure if it is annually, I think not much change out of 2 -5k depending on condition.

Is this the same for all other insurers?

There will be quite a number of boats over 30yrs , so plenty of work for haul outs, survevors, rigg inspectors, gas fitter etc.

  3. Just a little fun video we made for 2023 Spring Regatta round Waiheke; Weather God been kind, we did not even get wet. I cant remember the last time Spring Regatta course been shortened, but we are glad they did, good call RYC and thanks for organizing the Regatta, it was a good fun ride. Lessons: No excuses, always look at the flags at the start!

  4. Great work, looks just as good as spray job. Can you give some tips on how you go about your roll on paint job, what paint, what to do, what not to do and  what to watch out for. Seriously thinking of painting the cockpit. Thanks

  5. I have a facnor flatdeck furler on my 36 footer, it has many advantages, never jams easy to furl and I think its great and all is good, until the lower bearing seized. I was told that the bearing is sealed and needed a complete lower bearing kit. I got a quote from the local agent that the bearing kit would be about 2k landed (it has to be ordered and dispatch from France).

Before I commit to order (as it will probably take a while before it arrive from France), Just checking the forum wisdom, if anyone has similar experience with the lower bearings and if there are any other options for repair locally, or anyone have a lower assembly for sale ( would save waiting time and money).

    Thanks

  6. Not sure if been discussed re insurance and boat use during 3 & 4, just got this frm my insurer, which is very succinct:

Is your boat covered by insurance, if being used during the Covid-19 Level 3 & 4 Lockdown?

If you use your boat, having been told by the Government that you shouldn't, then the short answer is "No". It would be regarded as a reckless act and/or wilful misconduct, and your pleasure craft insurance policy contains an exclusion for that.

As per the NZ Government’s instructions around recreation on a Level 3 or 4, here’s details of the Government position: https://covid19.govt.nz/alert-system/alert-level-3/#recreation This clearly states that boating is not allowed.

For a more detailed position on sports and recreation activities including water sports, see: https://sportnz.cwp.govt.nz/assets/Uploads/Play-Recreation-and-Sport-Detailed-Level-1-4-Table.pdf

Please feel free to contact us if you require any further clarification.

And on behalf of all the fish out there - thank you for staying at home!

  7. Any advise for what to use and optimal length for 11mtr yacht. The original (I think is tapered sail batten) only lasted couple of years, incredible the condition of it under strong NZ uv, can see the strands of fibre literally breaking up. Is there a special material (maybe a ss spring?) to use and what is optimal length?

  8. As mentioned somewhere before, initial capital cost is only a small consideration. The biggest cost (opex) for most, will be marina costs, followed by haulouts or sails, and insurances all of which is "length dependent". This is especially for boats that just missed the marina length cutoff length. At the moment a lot of boats are getting away with it i.e. for 1020 the can squeeze into a 10m and 1220 in to a 12m berth. No doubt in future, things will tighten up and a 1220 will have to be in a 13.5 or 14 m berth, and opex cost could be significant as it will be on going and one way (up). For some reasons, designers design boats that just go outside these marina lengths by 0.1 or 0.2 meters.

If in the market should seriously think about buying boats that loa are 10m, 12m or 14m for max bang for your bucks.

  9. I did a search in crew.org and sure enough I am not the only one, looks like BOOBOO hit the uncharted rock in his post:

    http://crew.org.nz/forum/index.php/topic/13149-uncharted-rocks-in-marina/?hl=westhaven&do=findComment&comment=167564

    The post from BOOBOO:

    "Posted 22 June 2016 - 11:00 PM

Westhaven has 2 of them near the breakwall of the eastern emtetence to. I have hit both of them in different boats. Never my own though."

I was lucky that I only just skimmed over it, and my Young 11 is only 2.2m draft (2 of us on board), as I said, it could do some damage to someone with deeper keel as you wont be expecting it, although it is bit like the hole in swiss cheese theory, you have to be there in dead low tide at the exactly spot.  This was coming into the marina and I was keeping to SB side. I will try to remember the location and draw a diagram.

So just be aware, although someone should chart it.

  10. hI it or any technos,

As all my instruments are raymarine and opencpn only accept nmea1 protocol, how do i convert navman propritory protocol (ie seatalk) to nmea so I can plug into cpn. I know there are converters in particular the raymarine E85001, but when i call L&B, they said ththe have discontinued that model and not available or supported any more. They moved on to seatalk ng, which is a disguised version of nmea2000, due to complex legal propritery protection by nmea, but that is another story. I just want to interface my seatalk1 inst to my pc.

I am sure there are many boats out there still with seatalk1, is there a simple economical alternative?

    Thks
