  1. Being safe has more to do with making sure your boat is up to scratch and you are vigilant in your navigation and you carry appropriate safety equipment for the the voyage you are planning. When we are planning more extensive trips the boat is pretty close to Cat 1 equipped and all systems double checked.

At night and rough weather we uses harnesses and the man on watch has an Epirb attached to him.

In other words you need to be self reliant and confident in your vessel and crew and only call for help as absolutely a last resort.

If your vessel is well found the chances of an emergency are practically nil with the exception of perhaps a fire which is always a concern as shown by recent events.

  2. From the Maritime NZ Radio Handbook page 42 :

Every effort should be made to notify arrival at a safe anchorage or at the

end of the voyage. However, unless a vessel is reported overdue,

the absence of a closing TR will not initiate a search or other

    follow-up action.

  3. Oh and speaking off getting internet on the Boat. What a rip off it is to buy Data for a T-stick if you only want it

for 1 or 2 months. You can only buy 5 or 6 gig, depending on who you go with and it was $90 odd dollars.

Also depending on who you go with, you have a limited time and you lose the data you have if you have not bought it.

So watching TV via the net is just not possible. Plus I found the speed in some places, as bad as the old dial up speeds

Yep got to agree Wheels -  tstick data cost sucks

  4. Maritime NZ specifically say they will not instigate a search if you miss a scheduled position report while you are on passage and have set up a TR with them. For that reason we we did not bother with them and instead relied on our predictwind tracker and regular emails home via that system on our trip around NZ. Our previous trip to Nelson return we did file a TR but with the predictwind system we did not consider it necessary this time. On any of our other coastal passages between Auckland and North Cape we never file trip reports with Coastguard or anyone else as we feel they are an imposition and take away from the pleasure of sailing where I much prefer the bubbling under the forefoot to the racket on the VHF.

If you are bothered about risk don't ever hop in your car.

  5. Yes just go where the Sh is.

We draw 2.1m and have never touched.

We have anchored where the 2.1 is north of Tokoroa island - nice spot and other times have called the harbourmaster on the VHF and arranged a mooring. Take a bit of old carpet to wrap around the mooring buoy to protect your topsides when the tide turns - only needed on some of the buoys.

Rangaunu definitely worth a visit also. Good fishing all along the beach between the two harbours.

One trip we went almost all the way to Awanui on a rising tide and back out again before the tide turned but it is quite a long way and could be a bit embarrassing if you got it wrong !

  6. Nothing major planned, around NZ again would be tempting but probably wont happen as it is a bit of a major.

Also would be keen to go back gunkholing in the Kaipara as it is home waters but that may not happen either.

We will likely be Houhora way in Feb or early March so may run into you.

The entrance to Houhora is easy and deepish, just past the island there is a slightly shallow spot with only about 2.5m at low water but the rest of the channel is deep and well marked. I haven't been in there in a big easterly blow but I think it would be fine. There is diesel and water at the fishermans wharf and a good general store in the same spot. The deep sea fishing club a bit downstream is good and they do meals on some nights I think.

  7. Hi Dave

We spent a night in Cascade Bay on the SW side. It was the best spot in the light easterly swell at the time. There was a dive charter boat there at the same time which had been diving on the Elingamite.

Also spent a couple of nights tucked into the little bay beside the island at the Eastern end of Spirits bay which is a nice spot and we have also been into Parengarenga which is magic and reasonably easy but it needs to be settled and you don't want any easterly swell. There is about 4m over the bar at LW.

We also like Houhora - ask for a mooring or anchor just northeast of the little island  and Rangaunu - anchor just south of the reef by Rangiputa

  8. We have been using Altex No 5 for a long time and before that Altex 10. The last application was 2 years ago just before we circumnavigated NZ. Since then the boat has had little use apart from one trip to North Cape in February and return to Westhaven. It has only been cleaned once in 24 months and that was a light rub by Scuba about 9 months ago, luckily not long before inspection by the BOI Harbour outfit. We have just hauled and reantifouled with Altex 5 and could possibly have got another year out of it except for the lower part of keel from pushing through mud to Warkworth. Even when we hauled it was pretty clean considering it hadn't budged from the marina for nigh on 6 months. It is an expensive business on a 40 footer if you don't antifoul it yourself. All up over $3400 including the haulout at Pier 21 and propspeed.

BP - the most critical things are a good sand, plenty of paint and don't let anyone near it with a waterblaster and being careful with cleaning using a soft brush. We also try to leave it at least a couple of days before refloating and paint at this time of the year.

When we hauled it was way cleaner than those photos of Coppercoat apart from the lower keel which had no paint on it !

Micron 66 sounds like a good product but you have to remove any soft antifoul before you could apply it.
