Thanks for the welcome back!
Yes I know RNI is harder and if I can do it then I can definitely cross the Tasman. A certain certain someone suggested it to me as I could be making records and it's a good prep for the Tasman.
I know it's a Solo project, unless I pay someone to help me which I am. So because of that I really need to find out ASAP:
"I have a question re-galley....does anyone know the new gas regulations re the minimum height requirement from the top of the stove to the side decks? I'm going to put in an eno open sea with grill. A long while back, I had a cat 1 inspector come by the boat and he said there was a minimum, but it wasn't in the every day books, as I think they had just changed it or something of the sort. Can't really remember."
Does anyone know the answer to this?
Knot me, I'm still debating on finishes, but yes I put kauri ply in places with that purpose. Other places will be white washed like the under sides of the side decks. Maybe a dab of Colours here and there too... yeah I'm a girl, so what!

Hi all! Sorry I disappeared for a while! I went home for nearly a year, as I had not been home in 6 years!
Since I have been back, the boat has been getting a lot of action. Saloon, water tanks, chain plates, head/wet room, wet area/bunk are all basically done other than the finishing touches and we are starting on the galley now.

Well for those of you you who don't have Facebook or have not liked my page (please do it), here is a link to see my page (don't have to have a Facebook account to see it) and to see the progress I have made with her.
https://web.facebook.com/Guate.The.Solo.Challenge/
Also here is a copy a of a post I posted last week or the week before with a reassessment of my goals:
So I have had a week of re-thinking on my goals. I believe they are achievable, but I know I will need some backing and support to achieve them in the time necessary.
My goal is to have the boat finished by the 1st of September this year. This gives me time to fiddle, learn the boat and practice with crew (preferably 2 handed female team or fully crewed female team) for the Coastal Classic 2017.
Then I will have 2 more months to do any other necessary fiddling and practicing sailing solo. Come December/January I would like to tackle going around the North Island solo. Preferably non stop, but this will be weather dependent and skill.
If I am able to successfully complete this journey, then I will feel prepared enough to achieve my ultimate goal, which is completing The Solo Trans Tasman Yacht Race in April 2018.
These are immense goals coming up in a very short period of time. I won't lie and admit that this is a very overwhelming and scary challenge, but at the same time will be very satisfying and amazing upon completion! I believe in myself and hope to surround myself with people for the next year who also believe in me!
Please help me spread my story and maybe get some friendly helping hands to be involved in this journey!
Thank you to those who have already been or are currently involved with my project! I hope you all know it means the world to me and that I am very appreciative of it...

Hi all!!!
I know I have been silent for a while, been a busy bee at Norths and a bit on boat.
Great news is I got my residency finally! Haven't had a chance to get a proper celebration in yet!
Anyone keen on taking me on as a passenger?? Sorry for late notice, did not think I was going to be able to make it and now I can!
Please text or call me 0211706138
Cheers!!

Oh they aren't on just yet.... I only put them on to see the contrast. Soon though!

Before, after and close up! I sanded back my mistake and then I retried it with turps and ragging it on. Did 7 layers, and well it doesn't look flash, but it will do. It is what it is.... I call it rustic!
-
Anyone free to help me or show me how to varnish my beams... ?? Need to get it done so I can glue the side decks down... I don't want to have to redo it a billion times until I finally get it right... pleeaase!!

Ash have just read through the whole 14 pages of this post. Talk about dim, although we have chatted via txt, I thought you a gay guy. Given your name could be M or F and you boat clean, wrongly presumed you as male. When you said something about your partner, he, I thought, oh Ash is gay. Just shows how one can get things so wrong.
Your doing great things. If only Id done like wise at your age. At a girl.
Many do! Actually, my first experience for doing a race, I was called in as he thought I was a guy and then was surprised when I rocked up and I was a girl. Was not given a job other than to read the course, but then I just took over a job mid race and was left to do it. Believe me you are not the only one, there have been many....
Funniest thing is when guys walk in the shed when both me and my now ex were there together, it would be only natural they start talking to him as if it were his boat. But he would clearly state he has no idea about boats, that I am the boss and that they should talk to me. (He knew it pissed me off when people just assumed it was his) They would still turn and ask him the questions, regardless. Some people just can't fathom the idea that a girl can also own and build her own boat! I have finally just learned to accept it....or maybe not....hence why the boy got the boot! J/K He just wasn't passionate about sailing, so it was never gonna work unfortunately. Still mates...still helps every now and then as well.

Reading this im feeling a bit emasculated. Lol good going
Want to feel more?
I am about to saw out my cockpit to resize it, make it smaller bc I am so damn short...and then put it back in and fibre glass back together again.
OK even I admit I am nervous about this one. Especially with no demonstration...just a quick chat...ok do this....tell me when done.
I ask myself everyday...what did I get myself into!?
Can't wait until the day it is done! I might take off for a few weeks and not be heard of.

Well I have finished up the top part of the cabin top and have now flipped the cabin top over and also got a new shed mate in today. Have not been able to add more photo because when I updated my iOS to Mavericks my iPhoto disappeared and have no idea how to get it back. Anyone good with Macs?
The plan for the cabin top is since I am moving the toilet from the bow back to be even with galley I want to put a port hole on either side, one in galley and one in toilet. Then I will adjust placement of windows to accommodate this and also make sure they are of cat 1 standard in size. The hatch I am moving behind the mast for two reasons, one being to have better airflow through saloon and two to be able to single handedly pull in a kite and drop below and still be able to reach halyard as I don't want anything on the mast, just in cockpit. Also I might add a small hatch at the front of the cabin top for the v-berth. We shall see....
I still need to adjust seating in cockpit, because me being so short I cannot brace myself in on a heel. I am also putting a few lockers off the stern, changing the way the water exits the boat and putting a locker in one of the seats specially for a life raft and grab bag. Was going to make a few other modifications, but at this point I am ready to get this boat in the water, so have decided to leave it as is. I wanted to create a bit more room around galley and toilet, but I'll survive without it.

good to see you still going. was wondering with no posts for a while. you have taken that boat a few steps further than i did or will with Oracle.... mind you is there a new keel/rudder planned ?
Step by step... I haven't gotten that far!
Yeah I had stopped for a while...but my mojo is back and more motivated than ever!

Bloody Hell Ash, Im itching just looking at all that chopped strand matt. You never considered using it as a mold and building a ply top straight on top of it, after all you have a nicely built timber hull, and wouldn't have taken any longer... warm dry and no itchies. And lighter.
Oh crap! Now you tell me!
Nahhh I enjoy it and it actually hasn't been too itchy...The key is to cover up properly and have at it! Much prefer that, than hand sanding the interior of my hull!
-
And this was todays' achievement! No more holes on my cabin top!
Tomorrow a new day of grinding....oh and fibre glassing the windows too!
-
Hi , yes all sold , bought a ganely 42 in oz not sure how to get it back hear , just getting quotes yay , yours is coming on now , big effort yay
Chris and I might be interested. I am sure we can find 1 or 2 more to come along as well.

Here is an update of how she is looking!
Starting to feel progress now...
I had to step on a piece of wood because I was too short to use the jigsaw properly to cut hatch and vent holes. grrrrr
Now I best get back to work! Hope you all have enjoyed!
If any of you feel like giving a hand, please don't be shy and come on down!
-
Yeah good luck was good to meet when you view ed animation, keep walking the talk
Have you sold her?
-
Just want to thank everyone for their encouraging words and support!
Here is a little bit more boat porn...
Trying to figure the size and the amount of circles I needed to cut...
Measuring and cutting...much rather be grinding!
My first attempt at glassing with CSM...lessons by FNG...which also comes with F* Up's so I have to fix them and learn why I shouldn't do them!

Marinelite they called it. Nice stuff, good to use, feels grunty yet not too heavy, nice colour and would clear finish well (which means I may do a couple of clear spots to bring in the warmth timber can do). Far better than the untreated CD pine shite that's it's replacing The price is damn good... not that I've looked super hard at what's what in that area.I'm using the Gaboon replacement stuff Gunnersons (?? spelling) sell. Apparently the world is running out of Gabons so they have swapped to what they call 'exotic timbers' or something like that. It's 1088 and has been very nice to use. Apparently 600kg a cube where Gaboon is 550kg a cube so close in weight and at the lighter end of the ply spectrum.Kauri is heavy.
But being a bloke I am more weight conscious than females who regard colour as more important
So are you using: CTB-X Gaboon (okume) Marine Plywood BS1088 or Marinelite BS1088?
At another shop, Gaboon is 460kg/m3 and Meranti is 480-500kg/m3 so not much difference in weight and Meranti is more durable. I am only using Kauri 4mm thickness to put in spots I want to keep natural, the rest will be Meranti.
My main concern is strength/durability, price, then look - as I am not painting it and keeping as natural looking as possible. Then lastly the weight, as it doesn't really make a lot of difference on my boat as it's already freaking heavy; it's triple skin Kauri and built really well. And to think they considered that to be a light weight boat in it's day!
Thus buying more expensive and lighter weight ply won't make heaps of difference on my boat. That is why I am going for the more durable/ cheaper ply with a splash of deluxe!
In the big scheme weight isn't real that significant it's worth getting too twisted up over. I've used 3 sheets of 6mm, 1 of 7, 3 of 9 and 1/2 a 4mm. Most of those were chopped so a very large amount is on the floor in offcuts and dust so maybe 1/2 there total weight has gone into the boat. I've probably got a sheet of 6mm to go to finish it all. Oh and there is 11sq/mts of carbon/foam used in lieu of ply.
Oh I did use 1/3 sheet of 6mm Kauri ply (which is noticeably way heavier than the Marinelite) I had lying around to form the stove box/area thing as it felt a lot meatier so I thought it would be better to hang the stove off and probably catch fire a little slower. As I've set fire to every single kitchen I've ever owned fire is something I should be concerned about... as the Wa is about the new one we put in the house this year
Good to see your coming along nicely.... the boats not going too bad either
You still haven't had me over to check out your boat! I don't want to see it once it's finished I want to see it smack dab in the middle so I can see the process. Then yes once it's all done too.
Glad to know about you and fires.... you are never aloud to touch fire on my boat! or in my house or as a matter of fact anywhere in my vicinity! Hope your new kitchen is giant block of cement. I feel sorry for Mrs. Knot Me!
Wow so you have used nothing of ply...there are a lot more sheets than that in my calculations. Well guestimates....maybe I should actually measure it all. I think Gary is accounting for a lot of F* ups on my part...

A bit of an update:
Me and Andrea hand sanding the hull
Andrea enjoying the vacuuming rather than sanding..
Oona showing her skills with the electric sander
The stern nearly done
The starboard side
The stern being cut out
Now that my neighbour has moved out: The new project, as I need a break from sanding!
Not quite finished with the first step, but almost there.
A view from astern
I don't own a pair of sneakers as I prefer barefeet, jandals or dive booties....this was the solution to prevent itchy feet!
Glad the grinder wasn't a saw!
Here are some videos of chicks with power tools!

I know I wont be using NZ Kauri. I actually like the look of the Fijian Kauri, hence why I am trying so hard to get it. I agree they do deserve a kick in the bum... its not BS1088 its AS2272 and after some research AS2772 is supposed to be better than BS1088, but not from what I have seen unfortunately.
Everyone advertises they have it but no one imports it anymore. I think they are sick of dealing with Island life ways and the inconsistency. At least that is what I gathered.
My next choice will be birch, but I would have to stain it as its too light for my liking. which mean more work, although another skill to learn! BBS has a really good exterior grade, that in reality looks like BS1088.
-
Gary has helped me in pointing me in the right direction in knowing what to look for. I have learned a lot! But I can't seem to find what I want in the quality I want and I am very stubborn so I am still looking!
I have been to BBS, Plytech, Whitecliffs, Gunnersons, Gibson/Plyman and have phoned many others. I am using the Kauri in areas that I will not paint and am leaving the wood look. Everything else I am using Meranti as it's the strongest.
BBS is offering to put Veneers on Meranti for me, but that is too expensive.
Any ideas?
-
Been delaying the build of my interior as I am trying to sort Pacific Kauri marine ply, either BS1088 or AS2272. The only place I have been able to find it is at Whitecliffs, but it still has core gaps in it. Anyone know of any other place?

I had a very special person drop by the shed yesterday and unfortunately I was not there to greet him.
John Rea the boat builder that built my boat over 40 years ago!
I had finally tracked him down last week, as I thought he might be interested in seeing the refit of the boat, little did I know this was the first boat he built working for himself! Thus making it a very special boat for him. Wish I could have been there to see his expression of the first sighting.
He got the gran tour by Dale (from Touch of Gloss, as he is in there repainting Prawn Broker) and said he would be back another day to meet me, as he is quite interested in the project. He was also very impressed in what good shape the boat was in....well, what is left of the boat!

Hi all,
I thought I would share a podcast interview that I had with a fellow sailor friend that I worked with many moons ago. He is very involved in the sailing scene, but on the other side of the world. I know I tend to waffle on when trying to tell my story , especially because I'm nervous and not used to interviews , but I promise to get better the more I do them!
I wont be offended if its too long to listen to, but please do check out the other stuff he has on his site. Enjoy!
Ashley Rogers is an old friend of mine from my Broadreach days, when I worked out of St. Martin on liveaboard sail-and dive-training expeditions. Ashley was a SCUBA instructor and we got to know each other at Broadreach's 'Pad' during the 2009 summer. Though she was living and teaching diving aboard sailing boats - and actually sailing between isalnds and dive sites - she hated it! Originally from Guatemala, Ashley now lives in New Zealand and spoke to me via Skype about how she got into sailing after reading the classic book 'Dove' by Robin Lee Graham, and decided she wanted to give it a go. Now she's preparing her boat for the 2018 edition of the Solo Trans Tasman race, a big event held every four years that sees sailors cross the Tasman Sea from New Zealand to Queensland, Australia. The 2014 edition of the race just got underway on April 22, so folow the fleet here! Ashley will be only the 5th woman to ever attempt the feat. Follow her on her Facebook page, The Solo Challenge.
