  1. Could some/most of the contents of a liferaft be transferred to a grab bag? ie a Cat 1 grab bag rather than a Cat 1 liferaft? It would simplify and therefore reduce the servicing costs (which are rediculous) and give more affordable options for filling the grab bag with the appropriate gear for the intended use. It would also give users the opportunity to replace the food/water/batteries etc more often.

It is getting to the point where liferafts are becoming a disposable item for offshore sailing which really doesn’t fit in this age of reduce, re-use, recycle. YNZ, any thoughts on this?

Just a heads up, I won't be giving any direct answers to requests for change - I'm not a subject matter expert on some of this stuff. What I'll do is take your feedback, constructive criticism, suggested amendments and reasoning, then put it to the group (led by Angus Willison, our Safety and Technical Officer), who will consider all the information for the new regulations. Anything that is a serious safety concern can be addressed prior to the new regulations in 2021 and an amendment issued if warranted.

  2. Oops, my bad, didn't think to look under "Racing".  Best I buy something made from carbon fibre, paint it a shade of fluorescent and get with the program....

I have gone ahead and added links to the Recreational section, which should hopefully help people find the information easier.

  3. There is a template of sorts in the YNZ Safety Regulations of Sailing.  I downloaded a free copy some time ago, looking for it now seems they want $23.  To help keep you safe.  And their lavish lifestyle paid for.  Grrr.

It's still available, and still free...

There is also a copy of the inspector checklist which you can download, here:

  4. What is being proposed is a draft as part of the Draft Marlborough Environment Plan. YNZ have made a submission which can be found here: http://www.yachtingnz.org.nz/advocacy/ynz-submissions

Northland Regional Council are currently reviewing their Regional Plan and have introduced some draft rules around sewage which don't seem practical. We are currently preparing feedback on their draft, submissions close on Friday.

This may be of interest to some of you (an update on some of the recent advocacy work being done at YNZ):

  5. Yachting New Zealand invites racing yacht owners and crew to attend an exciting and unique opportunity to learn all you want to know about IRC with the Director of the RORC Rating Office, James Dadd, coming to New Zealand to share his knowledge.

James Dadd will be guest speaker and included among a panel of IRC experts at an upcoming IRC Forum being held in Auckland on Monday 16 May.

The IRC Forum is FREE to attend! Don’t miss this fantastic opportunity!

James, and other IRC experts, will answer questions and provide tips on how to get the most out of your rating. The IRC Forum will be invaluable for owners already holding an IRC certificate or those considering it.

    When: Monday 16th May, 6pm

Where: Conference Room, NZ Marine 85 Westhaven Drive Westhaven, Auckland

Refreshments will be provided. RSVP to kelly@yachtingnz.org.nz.

More about James Dadd, Director of the RORC Rating Office:

Initially, in 1998, James joined the RORC office to help with the development of new rules to protect IRC. His focus then became working with Mike Urwin and the rest of the IRC Technical Committee to try and continue to develop IRC into the future. He has also been a measurer at four America's Cups and four Volvo Ocean Races, developing class rules for both events. James is also involved in the maintenance of the IRC software, is a member of various committees, such as the RORC Special Regulations Committee, RORC Technical Committee, World Sailing Class Rules Sub-Committee and World Sailing Offshore Special Regulations Sub-Committee, and is class measurer for the Wally Class and WallyCento Rule.

  6. As Matt said, it was a completely open invitation to all classes, and even when approached by keel boat classes we said "ok".

Non-affiliated classes were invited and some took part, i.e. the Open Bic.

I can't tell you why classes like the PT, Hobie and Viper were not able to be there as I was not coordinating the class responses.

This was an attempt for us to try something different, try to reach out to the public and have something hands on. We were also thinking of trying to showcase to young sailors already engaged what classes they might like to move in to when they grow out of their current boat.

While foot traffic was slow, we think we're on the right track. Looking to improve on this for the next time, we are looking at timing and venue (bearing in mind, being on the water and having people able to try a boat is critical). Westhaven were incredibly supportive, which was great.

There are some photo's up on YNZ's Facebook page, https://www.facebook.com/YachtingNewZealand.

I was stoked to see my old P Class show up!
