  1. Its probably boring, but as my haulout is approaching I try to get everything ready by then. The next one is the rudder bearing material. I have access to engineering workshop and various machinery and I'm capable to make things, I would prefer to make this one as well as I don't think it would be too complicated. However I could use some help to find the suitable stuff for the job. About 8 years ago someone mentioned Vesconite on this forum as a good one, which is probably right but I couldn't find supplier for it. So if someone have any suggestion, I would much appreciate that.

  2. made one using galvanized water pipe, put a nipple in on angle, about 150mm down from bend, never had a water back flow problem,4yrs on still there. previous elbow was steel as well lasted 15yrs.

Is it simple? Is it cost effective? Yes. Great to see some creativity over the "get a new one" perspective.

  3. I have a few project on my list when I take Topaz out from the water, one of them to change the foredeck layout as it isn't as good. That includes the extension of the anchor locker for two reason, one is obvious to have more space for chan and anchor, the second on to create some extra reinforcement for a bollard (for mooring line). So I'm going to add a bulkhead approximately 350-400mm aft the existing one, which is the wall of the current locker. The plan is to fiberglass it in and outside with a couple of lay of fabric which mean it will be sealed completely. Does it worth to get marine ply for the job, or any other just works fine?

  4. As Puff earlier started a great topic with intention to show our own boat sailing, it become clear very quickly that is almost impossible for the very simple reason. The best what "we" could show is a few shot on board, splashing waves, sunrise, sunset etc. Which is awesome. I keep returning for those pictures when I couldn't go away, even for a few hours. However, the nice "full body" boat pictures usually come from someone else if we lucky enough to get them. So I would like to start this topic, to show those boats who sails along us. Presumably everybody has camera on board (at least a "very"smart phone) so please take a few shot from the passing boats and share it. If someone recognise themself, could contact with the person who posted for discuss the day or the trip whatever...

Here is the first one from yesterday in Lyttelton. After so long we had nice NE-weekend great sailing conditions on both day. Sunday have been a bit windier... unfortunately the very low tide made life complicated for us on moorings so we only had the afternoon.

  5. Hm... one more question, just to be sure, if I go for two blade propeller from three blade, should I consider to make any extra shaft support, or different type of bearing? I can imagine with less blades, less balanced run, increased wear on bearings. I'm confident I'll  go for two blade folding if I have enough space.

  6. What a relief... I'd like to enjoy sailing and the only thing what I want from the propolution to give me a backup in case of emergency, plus short distance motoring like in and out from marina, anchorage like that. I don't think I ever enjoyed motoring anywhere in any distance with a two cylinder diesel so I will try to avoid in the future anyway.

Obviously on a larger vessel have a bit more importance of the "motoring" capability and I understand it better to do on the most efficient way. So I guess I have one thing left, to pick the brand...

Tough one... Gori, Bri-Ski eventually same price, roughly same lead time... hmmm...

  7. I have two Kiwiprops.

I get them to service them each year and it costs around $120.00, so $60 each and they are given a full birthday.

What I like about kiwiprop is the owner is a bit of a boffin, so went away and looked at how he could get me a little more speed. Actually spent quite a bit of his own time to see what pitch and variables I needed....he came to the conclusion, which he backed up with a shitton on a data, that my boat suffers from terminal slowness disease, and no matter what prop I use, Im going to be going really farken slowly...and he was right.

They appear to enjoy their work and want their product to succeed

Good to have local support, as I'm in Christchurch/Lyttelton I wouldn't expect to get that much support. Do you have them on a cat?

  8. So you can get substantially more power in reverse, esp with a feathering, but I think you are thinking folding now? which can have less power in reverse.

If you match the prop really well to your boat, or get one with adjustable pitch, you can actually end up with higher motoring speeds over your fixed prop. It all depends how well matched your fixed prop is. With the adjustable pitch, you just tweek it until it is optimised. With a unit where the pitch is fixed, you just have to hope the first guesstimate is close enough, same issue with a fixed prop.

Yes I'm drifting towards the two blade folding, and actually I hoping a bit more than a "guesstimate" from a manufacturer, whoever it will be. That is the reason why I would prefer to get a purpose made with respect all known factor. Am I expecting too much?

  9. I'm pleased as the task to chose the right folding propeller is not the easiest, also I couldn't expect 100% result. Good.

I realized how difficult to compare those propellers in any circumstances as they are so complex "creatures" and all has good and bad side. Also to get a folding propeller, just like choosing a boat, is a compromise so I accept the fact I will sacrifice a few things to gain a bit of speed, sailing angle and reduce ware on the shaft seal.  So I'm aware of this. Do I have to expect anything else than slightly less top speed forward and less power in reverse?

  10. Lots of great info, I learned again. Actually I have to check the clearance between the shaft end and the rudder. In memory I have plenty of space, but looking this picture (one of the 15 Chargers) not as great as I remembered.

    Shadowfax in the air.jpg

It looks like a feathering two blade on the picture...  maybe a reason for it.

Conclusion: due the engine size and the nature of Kiwiprop that is out, let see the available space and go from there. The preference is geared folding type (two or three blade)... but who knows

    Thanks for the comments anyway

  11. I had a great reading about autopilots after I asked for opinions and that was a great help to make my decision, so here is another theoretical question, well not so theoretical as I'm looking to replace my existing three blade fixed propeller and it seems a good idea to go for something more sophisticated (complicated). Earlier I researched about these propellers and I realised all manufacturer makes better product than the opposition.

Anyway I kept Kiwiprop and Gori on my shortlist, and honestly I tending to go for the Gori, just because it looks more robust for me.

I really would like to hear opinions, experiences with these, or even about other brands.

Just to be precise with details, the boat is 33', 2GM20 engine with a 2:1 gearbox and about 5t displacement when ready to go.

  12.

I have a  Simrad TP22 that is not set up via nmea to plotter or wind I.e. It will only steer to course I use mine all the time, although my boat is lighter than yours Arpad. I wouldn't be without mine now...it just gives me so many options to do other things  while the boat is going from A to B. I am always very aware of balance when getting it to work comfortably for longish periods to ensure it doesn't  flog itself to death. Although, I did get caught out the other day under full main and masthead gennaker when the breeze built progressively over the afternoon and the boat jumped onto the plane and the apparent went forward... Interesting. Mine will hold a just cracked off course on the wind 30-40 degrees apparent quite happily in 20 knots.

Cheers Matt (?) Yes Topaz slightly heavier when she is full of "crap", I'm still taking stuff from board. The design weight is 3800kg so have lots of thing to remove, at least what I never will use. However  around 5000kg is pretty much a reasonable target to achieve and that is just the max on the 22. I always been curious why is the weight restriction on TPs because the required force on the helm depends on the balance. In fact you could struggle to hold a 22 footer trailer sailer's tiller when easily can hold the tiller on a 40 footer ferro boat with two fingers. So I'm fairly confident 22 should be enough for the purpose. In terms of use, I had no issue with the ST 2000+ apart from the lack of water tightness. Even parts are reasonably cheap for it I just lost my faith on. I hope Simrad is a bit more robust.

  13. Get the 32, basically you can keep spending on electrical steering gear until you run out of money.  I wouldnt bother rushing it, you may be surprised at what you find out about boat handling as you learn to sail your new beast. Ive got a 32 and I dont really use it that much, sail changes? heave to. Reefing, much the same, just let it all go and get on with it. Perhaps the best use of  TP is long off the wind boards in light to moderate winds, or anchoring (up or down) in tight spots. On the wind when its fresh or downwind in rollers, forget it.

I can see your point, in the other hand good to have a TP to go below get a drink from the fridge on hot days.... so I still have a few months before I really need it...
