  1. You know in around a month you have managed to cover every topic this forum has covered in 15 years :-)

Haha I hope thats a good thing. Im just looking forward to living the dream. I grew up in power boats and Noelex trailer sailers. But ive never attempted bluewater solo trips.

Im seeing some excellent refurb candidates for both trailer sailers and when my time comes for the dream yacht.

  2. As most know I intened to buy a $100-150k yacht in 10 years and do some blue water cruising.

In the mean time I want to practise by owning a trailer sailer.

If we stay in NZ, Id like to be able to sail out to Coromandel from Auck, would GBI be possible say in a Farr 6000 like this one? http://www.trademe.co.nz/motors/boats-marine/yachts/trailersailer/auction-1294822257.htm

Or should I go up in size a bit? I dont have a lot of storage in my apartment garage, but ive calculated Ill fit on trailer a yacht up to 25ft which rules the Noelex 30 out.

Is 20ft too small to get to GBI etc or is it more about the weather and getting to know your yacht first?

I plan to just sail around the inner gulf until I know what Im doing.

I also want to deck it out with all the short handed sailing options like Furling headsails, cockpit sheet access, self tailing winches and BIG screen nav information.

I think the Farr 6000 is already fairly short handed designed.

  3. Oh and another thing I have never used before, when sleeping, radar alarms.

Ive been watching this really experienced old guy on the net and he has an awesome set up, it picked up a large super yacht about 1.5 miles away and the alarm went off. I didnt realise they can be that precise.

What is the general rule around sleep? Should it be 2 hours sleep and get up and check everything, or do you sleep and rely on your radar system?

  4. These guys give you the videos in return.

This is true. But im refering to pleading for people to go to the site. We all have a point of view. I think its also things like going to first class hotels to steal internet and use their facilities that bugs me about the ethics, something they laugh about, little things like this I just dont find right. A lot of people PAY money for those facilities. I like what they are doing I just wish it was done with a bit more common sense and maturity. I dont personally think the videos are anything spectacular videography wise, no gimballing, no pans, zooms, just an SLR a GOPRO and a cheap Drone which they probably dont even realise the laws around flying. So its not what they are doing, its how that turns my stomach a bit at times.

Back to sailing single handed. Would a Noelex 30 be a better choice for when the Mrs does want to accompany me? Ive heard the Dagger is a better system/weight.

Also whats a list of some things you would do to a boat to make it as easy to sail single handed as possible?

This seems a good start http://sailingmagazine.net/article-1005-how-to-optimize-for-shorthanded-sailing.html

Keep In mind, in 10 years Im more than likely going to want a 10 year old Cat, but who knows maybe the romantic in me might go for a mono, but I know the Mrs preference and given her looks and being a nice person as well Id like to keep her if possible lol.

Another thing I need to learn is which is the right headsail to carry in bluewater, clearly you can take a couple but to cover every base (wind speed) is impossible. I was thinking a 150 Genoa when struggling to get the boat moving and a 90 Jib as the main headsail?

  5. sorry yes i meant 1220.

just something that can be sailed mostly from the cockpit that can sail well in conditions motosailers need their engines on and something with a nice euro style interior.

im still not against refurbing a NZ yacht, Im just not sure how best to go around making a boat single handed friendly, i mean i know the things that make sailing from the cockpit.

im actually trying very hard not to buy something now and learn to sail single handed, i thought a noelex 25 might make a cheap cruising hull to learn single handed with.

it seems there is no specific sail boat that makes a good cruiser.

  6. well when they are asking please go to such and such site to support us, i think of that as begging.

when you are 20 years old you are never going to learn what a beautiful thing it is to put in a few decades to buy something of value. like he did saving up for the first boat, so props to him. on the flip side i guess she is young and of the generation that want it now. i just think its a bit tacky, but hey if people wanna pay to see someone else motosail, i guess thats their right.

so is there anything in between something like the cyclade and a farr 1250 etc? something you can catch a small breeze but still have really nice interior etc?

  7. The Cyclades will be a lot more comfortable at anchor or in a marina than most NZ made boats for similar coin, the NZ made boat will sail a lot better.

The Cyclades is pretty much a motor sailor especially upwind. Depends if you like sailing or not really.

To be honest Im less interested in the sailing technicality and speed than I am the journey, if that makes sense. So comfort and ease to sail take a much higher priority than speed and ability. I guess MotoSailer is more SailerMoto as I dont want to lose the ability to capture sailing and just be a glorified powerboat with a sail. Are all benetaus just moto sailers?

Haha, no comments on peoples money making adventure partnersThat $330k or whatever, is that just youtube or does it include their other begging website system?

  8. Im look at the beneteau cyclades 43 and aside from loving the accommodation, the actual sailing set up suits a lazy sailer.

    http://newimages.yachtworld.com/resize/1/0/47/120047_0_070320091856_1.jpg?f=/1/0/47/120047_0_070320091856_1.jpg&w=924&h=693&t=1481913855000

Halyard and reefing feeding back, lazy bag and lazy sails, furling genoa, genoa winches within reach, lots of lockers in around the cockpit, a nice wheel (im not sure if it comes with a simrad or similar, but clearly id install one).

So what is the main complaint, build quality?

So what is a NZ yacht of similar design but better quality to this model?

  9. The thing Ive found with holiday homes, the only time they offer good lifestyle balance is when they are managed by someone else. You get to stay in it in the down periods, but you dont want to be doing the cleaning or organising the keys (a lot now just use key locks).

Is that the same with hiring out a Charter Yacht? You are tied to cleaning it, etc etc.

And is there money to be made in owning a Charter Yacht?

I cant say cleaning a holiday home was ever fun, but I actually enjoy working on my boats, whether thats de scaling it or just polishing up the gel coat, its a lot niceer cleaning a boat than a home imo.

    http://www.cruisingworld.com/charter/charter-companies-owning-charter-sailboat#page-2

  10. We used to take the wheel off at anchor on previous boat. Till a 60 kn squall at 3 am and we dropped the key down the cockpit drain and had no steering.

Oh man I bet that was a good feeling.

Tiller doesnt bother me terrible I just prefer a wheel. Either way one it will have an auto pilot on whatever I build/buy.

  11. Easy enough to remove the wheel when anchored , or could be changed to tiller if it really bothered you.. looks pretty good value but you will get a boat like that inside your budget eventually, they made a lot of them. 70k is still a lot of money if you are trying to sell a boat you really don,t want and someone is going to take it away for you.  Some people hold on waiting for their price and spend more on storage than they eventually sell the boat for. Like the 10k keeler at the moment on trader, a truly motivated vendor will find a buyer, when they realise that there are things more important than an extra few thousand dollars.

I agree, what people are asking and what they will get are 2 very different things. I know Im a realist when I sell things, but one thing I have found since being back in NZ, people try to sell stuff on Trademe for as much or near as much as the new price, especially laptops and cellphones. maybe because they bought from a generic retailer and paid to much to begin with.

there is still the chance I end up working in NZ if the money is right, but if the economy drops it makes sense for me to go to aus and generally they pay more anyway, then the 10% super on top is not to be sneezed at. but i will miss NZ a lot.

  12. Whats wrong with Beale 33s? They seem very nice boats, great space for length and sail well.

Thats my question, the exact shape I want, easy access to the water at the stern, nice modern interiors.

Is there something structurally wrong with them? because someone earlier said they would steer clear of the Beale.

I also intend to do a lot of trolling for game fish off the back of the boat so Im going to need to think about how I control the engine once Ive dropped the sails to be able to back up on the fish etc. Ive always wondered why more people dont use yachts for fishing, they troll at the right speed, you dont spend $400 a day on gas. Ok it makes it hard with the sales but if you have all the sheets up the cockpit and can drop and lock everything I think its possible. I also know guys who marlin fish their 21ft tinnies one handed, so handling the engine must be possible. Also yachst have a lot more things sticking up etc, but Im sure there is a way to design things to be easier.

Has anyone ever seen a sail boat with outriggers for lures? ;-)

  13. This jeanneau 35 is the ideal shape, and sailing system for me.

    http://www.trademe.co.nz/motors/boats-marine/yachts/keeler/auction-1283526629.htm

Is their a similar older NZ hull I could do up over time to save money and get the interior I want? Ease of access to the water is a big thing and like I said i like using a wheel over a rudder.

I mist definitely plan to insure it has auto pilot, basically everything I can possibly do to make single handed sailing as easy as possible.

Why are the Beale 33 cruisers considered a bad idea? (aside from tiller steer)

I was thinking a Farr 38, but just not sure if its too race focussed rather than easy going cruiser?

  14. Im very seriously considering taking the advice on buying a NZ boat and spending 30% of my budget on renovating it to 2017 tastes. I can do a lot myself with my building and carpentry experience.

I guess the main thing is getting my eye on a good model to keep my eye out for.

Im not worried about being on the lean instead of a cat as I dont intend to be Sailing as often as I do being moored and spending my days spearfishing and exploring. And really is a days sailing on the lean really that bad, I dont think so.

I think something around 36-40ft is the right size for me.

Any tips on installations to making the vessel easier to sail single handed appreciated?

Id much prefer a wheel to a tiller.

I might possibly put it on the hard in Aus and work on it over time as my down time hobby.

Thanks everyone for the advice so far. Ive found swing moorings around KeriKeri to be between $5-8k.

  15. I have never understood giving other people money to go sailing - I need every penny to get myself out there.

Hey look I totally agree, its not cheap. But I think some people on the net just like to live out fantasies on youtube.

Personally I like to get out there and do it. But Hobby videos are good like 5 min videos people have put together like spearfishing etc. Always something to keep the juices going.

I also find it tacky begging for money and now they are being given a $1m Cat thats being paid by other peoples money that they are counting on.

I know they think they provide a product, but honestly its not worth the money they are getting for it and I just find the whole thing very generation y/z.

The fact they readily admit to stealing peoples internet and using their facilities and then asking for other peoples hard earned money so they can live their dream for free, I find it a bit poor form.

I have full respect for Riley saving all his dosh and buying the original boat, but this new venture I find really distasteful. But hey its not my money and its not against the law (even if going into resorts and using their facilities is).

  16. good advice TL, and in 5 years my priorities might change. who knows I might want to buy a live aboard. the noelex 30 could be a good option in the mean time. i can park it at my brothers place. as I contract id say ill be in NZ 8 weeks a year.

Im wondering how hard refurbishing interiors is? i use to be into property development, i was a builders labourer while at uni so picked up a lot of stuff there and taught myself a lot as well. Tiling is probably the one thing I dont do myself, I cant stand even a slightl raised tile. I have pretty good carpentry skills. I think a lot of the older boats would only need modernising to my taste which would open up a lot of older NZ boats which the guys here are saying are built strong.

I also really like a covered Wheel cockpit. I guess that can be as simple as putting in a bimini/canopy? is there any way to convert a tiller to a wheel steer?

the thing i dont like about vagabonde is not just their ethics, but claiming how she is an experienced sailor (after never having sailed previously) and it takes a certain kind of person (i think its her ego that annoys me), also some of the aussie like mentality toward other cultures and lack of learning cultures before she arrives drives me nuts. Riley though I think is a cool dude, aside from his really, man on man moustache haha. I thought it was a glue on the first episode I watched. I think the chick is just really young and maybe its her lack of maturity that im picking up on. I like that Riley wears an actual dry cell spearsuit and doesnt complain about the cold like the chick, i think she needs to buy a suit, who goes spearing in 18 degree water and doesnt get cold after an hour?

i think there were a lot of other sailing videos before them, but few were begging for the dosh.

they have that other website outside of youtube where they ask for people to donate on. so they are getting multiple sources of charity.

so I dont think they are short of funds like they claim to be.

  17. they are an interesting couple, neither having sailed before taking on a 43 foot boat. i kind of dont like the way they beg for money to keep their dreams going and admit to going into 5 star hotels to use their internet for free to upload their videos and read their books etc. i just feel their young and thats what young people do. but ethically i didnt enjoy some of the things they did in their videos. but hey nobody is perfect :-). but that new French Cat they are being given looks awesome. Right place right time.

The guys making a lot of money imo on sailing on the net are Sv Delos, mostly because most of their video Icons are topless women lol. Sx sells. Perhaps something the Vagabond guys could take on for getting more money. haha.

i feel that boat was more an inshore design than one of the bendy offshore hulls that are often reviewed well. In saying that its a lot of boat for $100k. Ill have to research the model more and some reviews.

Im thinking if I go monohull, as i intend to spend most of my time on the water I will be single handed, things like control lines, auto helm, roller reef genoa etc, anything that makes single handed easier. clearly i will be island hopping as i like my sleep.

i know there are some people out there that sleep during bluewater cruising, but isnt that nuts?

Im starting to feel 36-42 feet is going to be about the right size, i know guys sail bigger boats single handed, I guess Ill get some more sailing under my belt in the mean time and make the call once Im ready to settle down and buy.

  18. Size is irrelevant. If it is seaworthy then it can do it. Length will determine comfort and cost and your tolerance there is entirely up to you.

Yeah thats why I was asking the size question due to price, clearly you get a lot more modern yacht for a smaller size, but there must be a point at which a yacht becomes uncomfortable as a bluewater cruiser?

Im also thinking I can finance the boat in the next couple of years, and like I said use it for bluewater cruising when Im on holidays from Aus, or do the trans tasman thing and keep the yacht there ;-)

  19. I think what Im really after is a blue water cruiser for New Zealand but also the pacific Islands and maybe even a trip to Hawaii then down to the Galapagos, the Mrs would love that being a double doctorate in Zoology (Herpetology and Ornithology).

So what size is the smallest I should be looking at?

I like this German cat for $150k.

    http://www.trademe.co.nz/motors/boats-marine/yachts/multihull/auction-1280859235.htm

Anyone familiar with balticat builder from germany? http://www.balticat.de/

Also looked at this article to get an idea of what makes a good bluewater cruiser.

    http://www.sailmagazine.com/boats/design-and-technology/twelve-top-bluewater-cruising-boats/

  20. not all  bluewater capable  cats are expensive,if you accept a few less unnecessary luxuries you can get a  fairly basic  38ft cat for under 100k that can take you wherever  you want to go , check the luckyfish video series of a Wharram Tiki 38 sailing  offshore. I might even be persuaded to sell mine.

Thanks for that, if you can wait 10 years lets talk then haha. I might actually buy in 5 and leave it moored for my holidays back in NZ.

Can you suggest some Cat brands for under $100k and what kind of age am I looking at?

The reason I like cats is simply the liveability and indoor outdoor flow feeling you get with them.

Ill check out those videos mate.
