  1. Since this is an AF topic, I've gone back and forth in my head for a long time on copper coat type systems and I'm very much still on the fence over them - If they are as good as some say they are why arent they in use everwhere? What isn't MPI pushing copper epoxy systems to help fight invasive species? It's one thing i can't reconcile in my head. Is coppercoat only good in a limited specific setups?
  2. Sounds like they are abandoning ship "A container ship has reached the stricken Platino yacht and its crew are now being transferred aboard the ship." http://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/news/article.cfm?c_id=1&objectid=11656295
  3. $50 for the lift hire and $348 on the H&S plan and personal
  4. Name has been release, Nick Saull director of Brin Wilson Boat Builders. Stuff is reporting he was struck by falling rigging in 4m seas. The missing mans name is not yet released and he's still missing
  5. All we can say is something bad enough to kill one and knock another overboard has happened. Now's not the time really for speculation. Very sad for all invovled
  6. Up here they are looking at limiting the amount of fouling in general :/ http://www.nrc.govt.nz/Environment/Weed-and-pest-control/Marine-pests/2016-marine-pests---stakeholder-survey/
  7. Maxxon are pretty good, Old one lasted 10 years before the glue went, new one seems just as tough
  8. Cigarette lighters work a treat! The detectors are highly sensitive to water exposure so it pays to check them monthly where possible
  9. Had completely forgotten about that, I'm assuming it's the X100? Nifty idea but was pricey last time i looked
  10. The only thing that scares me more than a fuel under pressure is a fire you can't see. Spilled fuel's are far more dangerous than gas leaks but as with anything no matter which way you go always know and understand the risks and take steps to protect your self. If it's gas have detectors and make sure gas lines can't block exits if they rupture and catch fire, If it's a liquid fuel know how to put it out! Baking soda or salt are great ways to soak up a liquid on fire along with a fire blanket, Never ever, ever, ever use Flour or the likes! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ay9ri3KmL4g
  11. IT is right, If you go down the oversize path on anything and aren't a full engineer who can do all the stress analysis then you should put in place a known weak link that is spec'ed to break at whatever the designer wanted it to break at. On our boat we replaced the rigging with rope that was nearly 3x the break load of what the Designer wanted, As such the shackles from the deadeyes to the chainplate are spec'ed to the designers break load
  12. Yeah if he's won a court order then it's a bit beyond the 'two sides of every argument' stuff.
  13. Pressurized anything on a boat gives scares me quite a bit (outside of the fuel pump for the engine!) You're always fighting something that wants to be in a different state and to top it off it sinks and is flammable. Still we have a gas stove with a flexable line, we also turn it off at the bottle when we're away for periods of time and i'm thinking about chucking in a servo on the HP side set to fail to closed
  14. Thats an interesting find
  15. Now i dont feel so far bad for running the genny for 5-6 hours once a week during daylight!
  16. Yeah assuming worst case of 6m length either 1mm2 or 1.5mm2 would work just fine. Normally you size the cable for the current to maintain less than 3% voltage drop which you can calc here http://www.calculator.net/voltage-drop-calculator.html 0.5amp on 1mm2 for 6m gives you a drop of 1.67% however if that load is 1amp the 1mm2 cable will give you 3.33% drop so you'd need to goto 1.5mm2 cable. As a personal preference i try to keep the number of different sized cables on board low so i have wired for 2mm/6mm/25mm/50mm
  17. Vinegar at 70deg or so would be your best best to dissolve any deposit's chemically speaking without being harsh and hard to come by, Formamide would be king at around the same temp. Either heating the solvent or heating the item
  18. Well the concrete's current path of not moving was clearly dangerous to the oncoming ship hence the 5 blasts
  19. Is it a toughbook touchscreen or non touchscreen? I would go Win7 for compatibility and a edge on power consumption but if it's touch and you wanna use it then Win 10 would be better
  20. A-GPS is what is normally in tablets and whatnot, It will work with no internet and cellphone connection. Because GPS may be off on tablets and turned back on a quick fix is needed so alot of data needed for orbit info is sent over the quicker 2g/3g/4g system rather than download them from the bird at ~20-30bits/sec In the apple case there is no GPS at all in the wifi only models but that doesn't mean 3g is needed. I'm not personally aware of a GPS chipset that 100% will not work without a data link

    Flares

That Sirius device is a joke, I'd like to call them out on their bullshit 10mile range - To get that range you'd need both sides to be 22ft above sea level in order to just get around the earths curvature which when you're in distress isn't likely to happen. If your on deck and about 10ft above the waterline then the other side would need to be 38ft up to barely see you. Unsafe marketing there that may get someone killed :/
  22. Might have to make me a "sh*t Beccara doesn't know" thread where i can ask away! Thanks KN/Ex
  23. While i've got your attention, The inboard/outboard thing has cropped up in terms of reliability in my reading - When you're offshore and are forced to motor for 48-72 hours straight would you have any concerns about running an OB for that long under motor?
  24. Hi ex, That would be her sister ship that is on loan to Oceans Watch and just came back from the islands. The tiki 38 has a payload support of around 2000kg over the boat as built to plans, Given the size/space it's actually a bit hard to overload them but it is easy to off balance them from front to rear. Having said that they do sit low in the water normally, Wharram doesnt like alot of freeboard!. We are considering going back to twin 9.9 high thrust OB's from the single mid mounted 25hp we have at the moment but that will be a wee while away. Matt, I'll give you a call when i g
