  1. Whoops, I thought I'd deleted/retracted/altered my last post but I didn't - clearly.

    No offence meant to anyone.

I'm talking about the STRUCTURE on the stern the AB and Cloughy mentioned, - bamboo - or other - please read what they said before posting a reply to my post.

  2. Welcome to NZ!

If you can by/borrow the "Royal Akarana Yacht Club Coastal Cruising Guide" it would be well worth it. Covers Auckland to far north. Continually updated and written by cruisers, for cruisers.

Most chandlers have it or buy on line.

  3. When I did my vhf course 15 years ago I have to say it wasn't great. It was Coastguard.

They taught the theory but buggerall on practicality. The tutors were/are volunteers but not necessarily great teachers - but they're volunteers - so big ups to them!

I learnt more from a seasoned sailor afterwards (in 1/2 an hour in the cockpit of his boat as opposed to 3? nights course) than I did on the course.

Having said that, I'm a huge supporter of Coastguard and I hope/think their courses have improved since then.

I've done 3 Coastguard courses - and my belief is they need to get good teachers teaching the courses, as opposed to just knowledgeable teachers.

The ability to teach, to get the knowledge across, shouldn't be underestimated.

  4. I'm going single handed cruising (but only for a few days) on Thursday as the weather up here in the land of Auckland looks bloody good!!!

Have to be back monday to get hull checked for osmosis 😟

And then go again for a few more days.

Who is heading out? Might be more crowded out there than ever at this time of year!

Fisherman with time on there hands, boaties just desperate for a change etc...............

    • Hand unwanted or expired flares into either your local police station, the Auckland Marine Rescue Centre or your marine retailer that collects expired flares (like Burnsco).

Just copied that off a website - might pay to let your fingers do the walking before getting in the car though.........

  5. Agree with Tamure.

I had a 33 footer surveyed by a very well know surveyor who called me 1/2 way thru the survey and told me not to waste any more money on completing the survey - he wouldn't take the boat out in a bath!

The boat was subsequently bought by another guy who got it surveyed by a different surveyor who said it was fine.

And the surveys were 9 years ago...............I see the yacht wandering around the Hauraki Gulf all the time - the owner says he's had no problems with her.

  6. Yep, got it thanks guys - twas what I thought I'd do, just needed supportive advice 😏

And you can place orders at Burnsco on line as of this morning - for non essentials. You just can't receive them by courier (or pick them up from Burnsco) until Tuesday.
