  1. From the Orakei Board email newsletter today :

During its November business meeting, the board asked for two amendments to the plan which was presented to members, acknowledging the strong support in consultation feedback for a short-stay haul-out and hardstand facility for boat cleaning.

If commercially viable, the board will adjust the plan to keep approximately half of the previous hardstand area. This area would be for a smaller, flexible-use site for a short-stay haul-out facility to be used from May to December each year. The rest of the year it would be cleared and available for events and other activities.

The board has also decided, if feasible, to keep the existing filtration infrastructure and washdown pad to allow for a cost-recovery wash-down facility for small recreational boat users as they exit the sea-access ramp areas.

The next step is for an expression of interest process to hear from parties interested in establishing and running a commercial short-stay haul-out facility.

  2. The response by NSW agencies -

    What is DPI doing?

After 15 years of published research and scientific observations in NSW, the behaviour of Caulerpa in the NSW environment is now better understood and we are changing the way we manage it.

We believe our efforts will be more effective if we focus on preventing the spread of Caulerpa to unaffected estuaries, rather than on activities that have little effect on established populations.

Large outbreaks of Caulerpa are almost impossible to eradicate, require extensive resources and cannot guarantee that Caulerpa will not reoccur so control activities will generally no longer be supported by DPI, unless in exceptional circumstances in a newly affected estuary.

We encourage people to “Make clean part of your routine” by checking for Caulerpa when fishing and boating and safely disposing of it. Fishers and boaters will be required to clean their gear and equipment before leaving affected estuaries to minimise the risk of further spread.

  3. One important point to note -
if your cell phone has zero bars then a ‘normal’ cell phone call won’t work.

If the modem has some bars, you can make a call via an internet app like messenger, what’s app, zoom etc.

This modem enhances  internet connectivity, it’s not a cell phone signal booster, that’s my understanding.

have a look at their website, essentially they provide a small receiver (modem) that has a better signal reception (more bars) than your phone and that allows for “more” coverage.

your phone or laptop or iPad can connect to it and that means you get connected to the internet.

We find that we can be anchored in some bays where the phone signal “bars” is zero or low, but the modem has a connection, so we can continue to be connected to the internet (read the news, email, make calls, etc).

  5. Try Wireless Nation, they sell a wifi router that seems to have a much better signal reception than a phone, plus all your devices can connect to it (chrome tv, vesper ais, tablets).

They do a coastguard package deal. You have to pay for the router and the 12v adaptor, but we’ve been very happy with its reception, plus your phone battery lasts a lot longer.

  6. Bought a NZ-made Aquapro about 5yrs ago. Was awful with manufacturing fault from factory - twisted tubes - which meant handles and rowlocks out of alignment relative to waterline. Made for strange handling. Give them due they took it back and ‘fixed it’ which involved unsticking stuff and repositioning it relative to waterline. I had asked for a new replacement (mine was 1 week old when I noticed the flaw) but they couldn’t because they said the whole batch they had in the factory at that time had the same issue.

  7. Was anchored in North Cove and could see that a large barge with a couple of diggers onboard was working at removing sand from the Iris Shoal area near Kawau - does anyone know about this ?.

It’s always been a good fishing spot and popular for scallops as well, but no more ?9DE5B3C6-D74D-4E10-9D06-C8DB99ACB260.jpeg

  8. MS-RA70 are nmea2000 compatable. We install these every week and plug them to the network and have full functionality on gps

There is a MS-RA70N model which has the nmea2000 socket and cable, but the MS-RA70 doesn’t have the socket. The N model allows you to control the stereo from a compatible chartplotter (eg ray marine axiom).
