The AC is pretty big (or was) here because we are so tiny and the AC made a huge impression. Blake, Coutts and Dalton have done an amazing job, winning and defending this trophy. That is something to be very proud off, but the event has gone a bit off course. The public want to get behind and see local heros  sailing and out of a NZ location if possible is the feedback I'm hearing. If we accept its just a technology race, then whats the point of sailors, whats the point of one design elements? If you want the quickest boat around a racetrack, you dont need any of the above. Batteries, software and robotics will do it better, the tech is there right now.

I am still of the opinion that a format where sailors matter more than computers, where teamwork and boat handling including flying extras would be far more popular if the aim is to grow the event and broaden its appeal.

Agree, its a bit sh*t.  I'd love to see dirty great big spinnakers, tacking duels and exhausted bowmen.  Even TP52 racing, while spectacular is too techy.  Give me a pole dip any day.

  2. Spoke to the rep yesterday.  The new "Repel"  which has been awesome in testing is anywhere between one month and 100 years from market.  They don't know.  The powers that be haven't told them when its being tested.  He reckoned that Ivomectin will give you healthier barnacles.

  3. Paint is Less than questionable. It just doesn’t bloody work any more. Spoke to Jim Lott yesterday and he’s saying a pint of Ivomec sheep drench with the paint. No he hasn’t tried it. Yes, there’s lots of these sorts of urban myths doing the rounds. Apparently there are a couple of products approved in Europe which are working. But not here yet. I’m pretty sure the European standards would be good enough for us so not sure what the holdup is.

  4. I found that any old thing did the trick but the splitter for the antenna needed to be top quality. I ended up with a NZ product from L & B. Or I think it is NZ made. Expensive but worth it.

And the race's are really short in a very confined space = no options for passing.

Beg to Differ.  Burling and co passed most of the fleet every race.

  6. I doubt there’ll be 5000 Jon. Racetrack has 900 boats. Maybe the same for members who don’t race to be really generous. So say 2000 members @ $30.  Not even enough for an office lady. And what are we trying to achieve?  There would have to be a dozen good reasons before you went down that track. Cruisers currently don’t belong to yacht clubs, or very few, what could this new entity do that would attract the cruiser to cough up. We’re a pretty miserable bunch.   I’ve never really minded the multi club/ pay 2 or 3 times scenario if it’s helping the kids and the olympians. Good discussion.

Interesting course of action, from a general perspective I am not sure how the SSANZ handicap committee have made an error since they don't set handicaps but simply adopt them from YNZ's PHRF committee.

And there you have it.  The reason for being once removed.

  8. I think the rationale for the switch was very sound.  Mark Mulcare won't be running Racetrack forever and SSANZ absolutely did not want to be burdened with being handicappers.  That's a short slippery slope to becoming very unpopular.  So what's left?
