  1. Want to treat the 830 to some bling kite turning blocks. Going for ratchet, my questions are:

    40 or 55mm?

I've seen some yachts with the blocks suspended from the lower lifelines by a little bit of shock cord, is there a reason for this other than stopping them scratching your paint? And if this is best practice, do you need to buy ones with a becket?

    Cheers

  2. Ok, so been a bit slack on the updates. Too much fun being had.

Long story short - despite all odds she made it in the water the day after Boxing day and went out to the Barrier for a few days whereupon we had the crap kicked out of us over new years.

Everyone survived and over the last few months we have made a couple of little trips like Mahurangi regatta and Kawau for Easter weekend. Still bolting things on every time we go out but we are getting there!

Anyhow - this weekends achievement was finally making her first racing appearance in over 20 years.

We were literally screwing tweaker cleats and blocks on whilst motoring flat out to Gulf Harbour to pick up some volunteer crew, never got around to rigging a kite downhauler, were 3 minutes late for the line after missing our division's flag (oops) and ended up just running a borrowed 18 foot skiff gennaker that was miles too long in the luff but too short in the foot, and the original 32 year old Dacron main but never mind all that - we had an absolute blast and the boat held her own despite our best efforts!

Big thanks to KM and the crew from Chains Ropes and Anchors for their rope wizardry - its a shame my lashing skills detract from the sexy bits but what they don't see won't hurt them...

Attached are a couple of pics from launch day and a freaky one I fluked whilst enjoying a sunny lunchtime swim at Tiri a few weeks back. See you all on the water

  3. We went to the Barrier at New Years with 4 instrument covers and 2 kids lifejackets.

Blew and dragged all over the place, couple of panic re-anchors then came back with three covers and 1 lifejacket

3100 series basic square white cover needed cheers

  4. Throwing the halyard into the drink not only slows the drop to a manageable speed, but it also seems to eliminate knots and tangles too which is nice!

Nothing like having a rock star drop turn to a clusterfart when the halyard decides knot to let the kite down past 2 thirds ha ha

  5. As far as topsides paint goes - you can't go past Autothane C.V for price and toughness.

It's a 2 pot Epoxy designed for commercial vehicles, available in any colour under the sun. I used it for the cabin, decks and hull on the Shapeshifter, it was my first time spraying anything like a boat and it came out mint. Cured fast and is hard as nails.

Any automotive paint store will be able to get it for you.

  6. Light boat or too much 'sail area' forward. Normal machines get a couple of furlers added and turn into sailers at anchor. I know , I done it.

What works is shifting the fairlead forward ie longer fairlead , haul the rode out on a bowsprit say, or cut down on stuff forward.

also a anchor buddy type thing dampens yaw down.

Light boat (cedar core 830) and no anchor fairlead as yet. Small self tacker lashed down on the foredeck and that's it. Had a spare chain balled up and sent down the line to reduce the turning circle but it's more the 'Accelerate in a straight line like a Top Fuel Dragster' that it seems to prefer. Helm straight it was worse but lashed to one side didn't make a lot of difference.

I like the idea of a little drogue or brake on the warp. might have to try that one thanks K.M

  7. This is where I got to the other day before clocking up some miles on Vlad the Verseys.

I'll chuck a serious quantity of carbon on the boat today. They aren't going to break now so by the time it's glassed in I could use it as a lifting point. The plan being you can do nuffin, not anything, unless you can steer.

I am running an overbuild program but that's easy to do when replacing 10kg parts with 3kg bits that are 20 times stronger.

That entire transom mod in gudgeon gizmo just on 5kg. The 2 set of gudeons I pulled off, 6kg just for them alone. I also had a fibre glass construction guru in yesterday to give her another once over, He said "F**k you do know how to over engineer don't you'. I heard "You are building a seriously strong boat" so I'm happy.

    Looking sharp K.M

    Must come have a looksie

  8. A tumultuous weekend at 830 HQ, whilst trying to get the spreaders fitted to the correct angle we discovered that some silly sausage had put the mast step on 140mm too far forward 20 years ago, and with the benefit of blissful ignorance this muppet had gone ahead and painted the boat. If we had of used it we would have ended up with a spreader angle of 34 degrees!

Once the inevitable was accepted it was out with the sabre saw and off with it's head. Some unwilling grinding and sanding later..... a new hardwood pad was fashioned and temporarily screwed in place so we could test step the mast. For the first time in 20+ years we had what appeared to be a yacht. Quite a milestone.

Of course the shrouds were now too short thanks to the relocated chainplates but a temporary solution has been found so back down it came and the step was glued, coved, glassed, faired , primed and painted (although a bit more roughly than the first time).

All we have to do is wiring, plumbing, lifelines, anchor fairlead, fit the new headsail tracks, vang, main, traveller purchases, backstay system and anout a dozen other things and we will be ready to launch xmas eve apparently.

  9. We were generously gifted some used tracks but after fitting them have found the cars I have are not man enough for them. They were off a Mk1 Y88 so I imagine they may be a bit obsolete!

Anyone have a pair gathering dust?

Or - point me in the right direction for new!

    Cheers
