I'd be keen. Based in welly and I've done a bunch of offshores and coastals. Did my ASS course last year and have all that gear. To my credit I've never done a passage north but have absolutely been meaning to do the trip around east cape.

Cripes, can you imagine someone getting diced during any stage of the cup? Anyone in the water being hit by the foils of another boat? I imagine the organising authority must have their PR plan in place already.

Might be "more cost effective" to have it 3D printed out of titanium!
I understand there are a few places in NZ who can print titanium now. 90% of the regular strength. I doubt they're cheaper than milling though.

There was some good schadenfreude to be had listening to public feedback about it on RNZ yesterday morning. You know art is doing it's job when it's got people upset arms about its very existence.
It seems more tasteful than Cuba Street's gold-plated poop.

I think youre absolutely right Wheels. The condition of the boat in question and the ability of the sailors involved are much more deciding factors than the particular model of boat.
We'll have to wait and see. Here's hoping its another case like the young lad rounding east cape earlier this year.

So anyone know what the details around the actual fines are going to be? All I can work out so far is that Im going to be infringing some sort of law the moment I step on my boat, in the water, without a lifejacket. For the duration of five undisclosed days, of course. Shouldnt the specifics of these sorts of """laws""" be declared somewhere?

Even with all this maritime NZ talk, hopefully the enforcement authorities will continue to pursue the statistically significant drowning groups, like the guys who go out into the river mouths in their 3m tinnies with no lifejacket or vhf.

Are ETNZ still planning on retrograding the rules if they win, or have they fallen in with Russell and Larry's grand future of foiling?
I recall there was some talk of it at the last AC - if they won.

When one of the foils come off, they either go skyward or down the mine. I would say they were 'lucky' to not destroy more of it by going down the mine.
Don't they typically design these things so that the rudders break without taking the hull with them?
