  1. KM, scored using base passage PHRF.

SSANZ gave themselves the option to move the division boundaries to fit actual entries into 'sensible' groups, but by the looks, boundaries are :

    910 and above, div 1

    865 to 909, div 2

    790 - 864, div 3

    under 790 div 4

Think they did a pretty good job with the groupings.

  2. Ratings, I know you're a fan of IRC and not one of PHRF, the below is how the land currently lies though.

    - There are only 20 odd boats in NZ with IRC, excluding the offshore boats.
    - IRC nationals, three divisions offered, ended up with one division, three TP52s competing
    - RNI, only two boats with valid certificates from 28 boats
    - the Gold Cup sited, 28 boats but only 4 with IRC and only three regular

For all practical purposes IRC iss dead here.

Keeping in mind the useful observation that if you keep trying the same things don't be surprised if you keep getting the same result, what do you propose to change this around?

Clubs have tried emphaasizing IRC as the major prize, but it ceases to be credible when less than half the fleet are entries.

You can try convincing people IRC rewards the best sailed boat, good luck.  The perception is IRC favours very specific types of boats and you can either sell your current boat and spend a lot of money getting one of those or not bother turning up.  That there's more than a grain of truth to that doesn't help.

And then there's things like optimising, tell most kiwi sailors to optimise their boats (read put away their code zeroes) for a rule and they'll tell you to find another rule.

My question is serious, what do you propose be done?

  3. Fish, the info I have on the FastNet would indicate division 5 has been merged with division 4 (

from results for the last five races, only the Sigma 38 and to a lesser extent the Sigma 33 have had significant class presence for designs prior to 1990 and those classes are way down in numbers for the last two races.

Using the most recent couple of races, your typical Fastnet boat is a First 40, First 40.7 or J109.

What I'm seeing is good growth in European production boats (yeah I know J Boats read J boats Europe for that) typically around the 10-15 years old.

One of the interesting things is the likes of the Prima 38 and Reflex 38 which were designed in the 90s so modern by NZ standards are also dropping off badly in terms of participation.

I'm reading the Fastnet popularity as driven by some pretty reasonable production cruiser/racer designs  within the last 20 years, presumably available at pretty resonable prices.  Whilst the older boats still have a definite presence, don't think it's driving the Fastnet popularity.

New Zealands fleet is generally older than that and the Js, Xs, Firsts common in European racing never established a serious presence here.
Don't think it's the big reason why there aren't small boats doing longer races here, but it's not helping.

  4. 53 entries by my count, as below, let's know if I've missed anyone

  5. Hi people,

Well, this year it seems to be a case of deja vu all over again, similar forecast, similar uncertainty in the forecast but hopefully a pretty spectacular evening to be on the water.

Best guess for the forecast is a north easterly kicking in later in the afternoon of around 15kts which should be just about perfect, hopefully the weather gods will do the honourable thing and stick with the forecast.

As with last year, we'll run two courses, 8.9nm for most and 11.3 for a few of the quicker boats.  Particularly for those starting last on the short course or first on the long course, if you especially want to sail the other course, let me know and I'll see what can be arranged.

The division split has changed a little from last year, just the way it's panned out with the entries we've received.

8.9nm:  From the start round Orakei Buoy to port, Rough Rock Buoy to port to the finish.

11.3nm:  From the start rounding Orakei to port, Saltworks buoy to port to the finish.

The start line is defined as a line from Westhaven tower to the outer distance mark (ODM), the finish line is a transit from the Westhaven Tower through the outer distance mark to the northern side of the harbour.

Start times shall be signalled with number boards on the tower and we will endeavour to broadcast each start time on VHF ch77.  We expect to coordinate start times using GPS time so starting on your GPS time should work well.

Be aware people you are sailing under Collregs which do require a higher degree of caution while navigating in close proximity to other vessels.  There are also insurance implications so if close to other vessels, throttle back the racing enthusiasm, no one wants a damaged boat just before their Christmas cruise.

Any questions, please email me at mmulcare@xtra.co.nz

Start times, as at 18:00, Tuesday 20 December

Happy to take entries until Matt says enough, be good to see a few more and forecasts are looking very promising

  7. Wish the best for Colman but I can't say I'm a fan of his boat, still if something can be got out of it then Colman may be one of the people who can get it out.  He won't be last.

My guess for winner is BP8 but it's easy to see 5 of the 6 new boats not making it so you'd have to think the lucky one from that group and maybe Vincent RIOU on PRB all have a shot.

  8. Swartie, The limitation of gender was in the Notice of Race, which is precisely where it should be.

It isn't the responsibility of an organising authority to ensure anyone putting in an entry  is going to comply with restrictions of a notice of race and reject an entry based on that.  This ignores such things as assuming a persons gender based on their name.

It is the responsibility of participants to read the notice of race and ensure that they can comply with it before they enter.

This is very basic, so basic at the level of the World Sailing Cup that I can only conclude that this person was fully cognisant of the restrictions and elected to enter because of a personal agenda.  The odds of entering a world cup without reading a notice of race are for all practical purposes zero.

They indirectly admit they knew this in part of their blurble.

You should also note that scoring from such an event is often relevant for such things as Olympic qualification so for this event, yes, her participation could directly affect others in an adverse way, it isn't exactly a rum race.
