  1. Guessing it will be Wasabi Smithy, Sayer design 12m and has done the Osaka race if I recall correctly.  Water ballasted (or was) and yes, respectably rapid.

  2. YB I think is missing the PHRF handicaps, so for any silly enough to be interested, my quick calcs using VMG since start would have (name, DTF, est corrected, place):

    Giacomo 832.7 04 22:42:52 1
    Anarchy 946.8 05 12:16:04 2
    Hupane 952.0 05 12:42:14 3
    Ran Tan II 923.7 05 12:51:20 4

    Miss Scarlett 929.1 05 19:15:37 6
    Shaman 928.8 05 22:45:58 7

  3. if you were mixing monos and multis, then sports boats are probably the best to do it with but the performance variation based on weather will be much more with most multi designs than with monos.

Multi, handicapped to an average, would still end up either first or last depending on weather and wind angle.

  4. From what I can tell from PW, weather will start to be less than optimal perhaps Thursday afternoon, Friday and Saturday cancelled through lack of interest (get very good east through north cover if you're at anchor), possible the puffs will go into the 40s, maybe well into the 40s.

Sunday harder to judge, probably okay but a chance the wind will still be in.  Both models agree until Sunday.

Basically find a nice spot by lunch time Thursday and ensure you've enough cold brewskies to last a few days.  Stock up on tranquilisers for the kiddywinks.

  5. First I should apologise.  Setting the course and times is very dependent upon the weather and the only thing I'm certain of with the weather is it won't do what I'm guessing.

That said, best guess is a north easterly kicking in later in the afternoon of around 15kts which should be just about perfect for a pre Christmas romp around the buoys with friends.  It will be very light earlier so we're hoping that doesn't hang around long.

This year we will have two courses, an 8.9nm course for the slower boats and 11.3nm for the quicker guys.

8.9nm:  From the start round Orakei Buoy to port, Rough Rock Buoy to port to the finish.

11.3nm:  From the start rounding Orakei to port, Saltworks buoy to port to the finish.

Both the start and finish lines are defined as a line from Westhaven tower to the outer distance mark (ODM).

Note that boats finishing to the north of ODM will be scored DNF.

Start times shall be signalled with number boards on the tower and we will endeavour to broadcast each start time on VHF ch77.  We expect to coordinate start times using GPS time so starting on your GPS time should work well.

Be aware people you are sailing under Collregs which do require a higher degree of caution while navigating in close proximity to other vessels.  There are also insurance implications so if close to other vessels, throttle back the racing enthusiasm, no one wants a damaged boat just before their Christmas cruise.

Any questions, please email me at mmulcare@xtra.co.nz

Start times, as at 14:00, Tuesday 22 December

  10. Just got confirmation from Westhaven I have a park for the night so BP is in.  (note to handicapper - it's a big slow old schooner that sails like a real dog).

    We have records,

I couldn't help but notice in the 99 CC, BP thrashed all the Y11s and E1050s, including Force Eleven and the extremely modified Kick, not to mention one or two other well known slowdogs like Positive Touch, Truxton, Valium ..., my goodness it even beat Suburban Reptile

  11. Had to smile with the last official finisher with an elapsed time of 28h 29m 59s, one second before cut off.

This year I doubt many boats flagged it due to the time limit but have noticed a couple of years since 2000 where over half the fleet would miss the time limit.  That will happen again and I think they'll be some pretty unhappy people when it does.

Have to say if I were racing and unlikely to make the cut off time, I wouldn't keep going for the GPS position scoring approach.  Also have to say if I had a boat any slower than an 88, the time limit would really make me think about whether to enter.  It's a lot of effort and a chunk of cost with a reasonable probability of not finishing.

Would commend the organisers for the change to the start sequence, that's all plus.

An observation I would have made from this years fleet was the absence of the traditional classes.  Open 85s and Ross 930s accepted, don't think any class had more than three entries.  Sort of crazy when there's as many E770s as Y11s, 1020s or 88s.

  12. Define massive Elly?  My experience is that if it's going up, 0.001 is massive, if it's going down, 0.5 is inconsequential.

Simplified a little, handicap has three parts :

    1 part (25%), RaceTrack
1 part (25%), an opinion of the design
1 part (50%), SSANZ race history 2012 onwards.

If you have fewer than 5 races previously in SAS, that 50% SAS part is smaller.

After each race, the handicap is reworked.

If a boats handicap comes out changing by more than 0.01 it may be manually assessed (still may change by more of course).

The problem with a series that's only three races long is that if only small changes happen and any handicaps were not spot on to start with, the series is all over after race two and you may as well have not bothered making any changes.

No right answer, there are good reasons to run a series where you make no changes at all and there are good reasons why you should change.  It can be though that if you make change but do it in a way that makes them inconsequential, you end up with the worst of both worlds not the best.

Any opinions offered after race 1, well after the race 1 handicaps are known, are treated with the smallest degree of cynicism.
