  1. fwiw, appreciate Easter isn't working quite as well as the Tauranga fraternity would wish, but two problems I think with November.

First which has already been hinted at, being as close as it will be to Coastal Classic, with White Island/Yates/Three Kings/Wellington at a similar time and with the majority of the Gold Cup on pre Christmas, there's just too much coastal racing at that time not to be diluting the fleets.

Second, with no long weekend it's pretty much committing boats to missing prize giving, taking an extra days leave to get the boat back or leaving the boat in Tauranga with the logistics that implies (yes, I know the Tauranga types already have that headache at Easter).

Sorry, just don't see it working any better than Easter at the moment.

  2. Think people are underestimating the extent of improvements in design over the past 30 years.

Certainly there's some production cruiser/racer imports that look pretty ordinary on the race course but don't assume that's because of the design. Sometimes yes the designs ordinary, sometimes the crew is. Nothing wrong with Zealous / Lawless, Django etc.

It's easier to compare the race end simply because there crews were good back when and they are good on the new boats now. At one time the R930 was pretty much it at the race end, now a Melges 32 is the equivalent, the difference is not small. Likewise stepping up in size, pick on the better 38-40s of the late 70s and try comparing to say a MC38.

  3. yeah it was a problem twist. Carparks don't clear out fast enough in the evenings to allow crew to find parks in the twilight racing.

Weren't Westhaven investigating some sort of plate recognition system which could be used to solve some of this?

  4. KM, trigonometry isn't a strong suit which I may well now prove, but to validate an AVS of over 115 degrees in the real world, wouldn't the top of your rig be a few metres under the water and might you need divers?

If you only go to 90 or a smidgeon above, aren't you just doing what the calculations do, a simulation with some assumptions?

If you do go to 115 or 120, might be best to get MS to drop this thread before you put in the insurance claim, think it may be messy.

  5. Something about solo and gusts to 50kts.

Even so, the Wharams were described to me as the H28 of multis, though the person doing the describing did seem to think he might have been a bit unfair to the H28.

  6. Is there any that hasn't fallen over?

tl systems and all the wharrams

A wharram flipped about 2 weeks ago up in the Bay, he wasn't racing so I think we'll have to apply Motorboy's rules to cruising as well. Only real question remaining being should the rules also apply to proas?
