  1. Queens birthday is guaranteed crap/cold/wild weather but likely to be westerly. Easter is regularly soft. My theory is its related to the full moon. Those are the two common factors in this race (which I have to say in qualification as I don't want the risk of being put in same category as Ken Ring).

  2. And up until WWII people were regularly dying from blood poisoning picked up in the garden. I know it's still a dangerous world but being too defensive makes it worse not better. Some of the OSH nazis need to learn that too.

  3. And every flush atomizes a good enough proportion of the doodoos to be inhaled while washing your hands nearby. I always say a good dose of bugs does your immune system wonders.

     

    I read somewhere that people growing up on farms and with animals in the house have much lower incidence of immune deficiency related conditions like asthma etc. I wonder if it is true?

  4. Following this posts, I am afraid to admit it, but I enjoy watching. It reminds me of the old days watching the citizen match racing series (who remembers that?). I'd love to see this style racing off Westhaven again. Or even Evans bay.

     

    Pity is that 3 NZ skippers and all finished at the back of the fleet.

     

    That guy Ben Ainsley knows how to sail. He was over the line in 3/6 races and came back in all of them to podium and win the regatta.

     

    Peter Burling and ETNZ led at the first mark in 4/6 races and in two of them ended up dead last. (To be accurate, he came fifth in one of those because they passed Artemis when it got tied up on the last mark). Disappointing.

     

    There was consistent 7-8 knots of breeze and the average speeds were 11 knots in all races so it wasn't pedestrian.

     

    The only thing I don't like about the high performance cat racing is that (normally) the boat which gets clear at the start stretches out with clear air to win. But some of the battles for the other placings is compelling viewing.

     

    Well that's what I think.

  5. At our yacht club a few seasons ago we had one course sheet which had one division rounding a mark to starboard and the other division to port. It gets hairy enough when boats are all concentrating on rounding and clearing a mark without having boats unexpectedly coming at you. With 50 boats all doing it at the same time it could have been something similar.

  6. I've just visitedGllenfern Sanctuary on GBI and The late Tony Bouzaid illustrates my point. A great sportsman who has gone on to do something meaningful for the country. He should've got a gong long before Sir Graham Henry.

  7. The halergs have never claimed to be anything other than a fundraising event for the halberg foundation. But they have become so boring and predictably mainstream that I gave up on them years ago.

     

    While I love rugby I don't think a sportsman should ever be the NZer of the year or be knighted just for being good at it. It just demeans them. Those awards should go to sports, business, arts people who have used their skills and notoriety for something other than their self aggrandisement. Sir Michael Jones for example.

  8. As much as I am against parking fees,on Wednesday/Friday night race days or weekends.Why not have issue a permit for a minimal fee and if displayed outside those times or exceed parking time limit then tow away becomes enforceable?

     

    Just as a means of stopping CBD all day parkers.

    Except for boaties who want to be all day parkers.  Human nature being what it is.  Down here in Tauranga the marina society have a really cool boat ramp for users of the harstand, which is only accessible by swipe card.  On a good fishing day there are more trailer rigs parked in the car park outside the fence than boats in the compound.  Ergo, boaties are sharing their swipe cards with their mates.

    KM, did the test get  done?  I'd be keen to hear as we are investigating doing a keel job similar to the one Meister has done, which effectively is similar to the Ross 930 conversion.  We're getting Bakewell-White to do the design and calcs.  I'm wondering whether this will make it necessary to do a pull down test to get our Cat 3 cert back?  

     

    If so, we'd be keen to hear how you got on, advice,comment, whatever, about how the keel mods affect your certification.  Can start a new thread if you like. 

     

    (and, yes, Willow, I know we have probably got rocks in our heads, but there is no harm in wondering and spending the time on this is more edifying than watching cricket right now).

  10. I'm surprised and sorry to hear that you've had no response. I'd thought kiwi sailors'd be more hospitable thaN that.

     

    Id be keen to take you for a few days in the sunny bay of plenty. It's 3 hours drive south of Auckland. My baby is a 30 footer. We mainly race her so it is fairly Spartan but comfortable enough for 4. I'm the worst fisherman in the known world, so can't promise any seafood unless we stop at a fish shop somewhere. There's a beautiful island about 4 hours sail away or some equally beautiful islands about a day sail.

  11. Thanks willow, but given the amount of mods you've done on your boats (plural) you'd be a confirmed proponent of improving what is essentially a very useable boat. Just a mite too slow.

     

    88's suffer from the one class premium and only the good ones would be a significant improvement. And the old adage of not buying someone else's problems apply.

     

    We think the bow mods will be the most valuable, a la Meister. We'd be keen to hear what others think. . Our current configuration has a lot of rocker forward of the keel which acts like a brake. Our thesis is that lowering the rocker will smooth the entrywhich together with an extra foot of waterline will give better flow and allow us to plane earlier.

     

    This is what meister did.

  12. Thanksx beau770. We think the grunty chicken option'd be too small. We've a challenge 29 which is like the tardis space wise so hard to go backwards in that area. Problem with her is she is not competitive in her current state. We just want her to go faster.

     

    930's seem to have the go but compromise the cruisability with fixed transom and narrow beam.

     

    Like what meister has done though. We'd be stoked to go like her. We have the budget to make similar mods.

     

    Bazthemammoth is researching about what the hull bow section should be if we went down that route.

     

    Also looking at keel design.

     

    Any ideas out there?

  13. Here's a brief list of laws off the top of my head which protect the ignorant: compulsory eduction, insurance law, consumer protection law, industrial standards law, unfair contracts law - the list goes on.

     

    These are not laws protecting the ignorant. They are laws protecting the victimized. An example of an attempt to protect the ignorant is credit contracts. And that has been successful

    In stopping the stereotypical ignorant in signing up for 30% loans from sharks?

     

    I don't have statistical support but I don't for a moment doubt that boating is generally safer on a per capita or per event basis than this list:

     

    Scuba diving (there needs to be a law making it compulsory to have a buddy and a dive computer.)

    Rugby (there should be a law outlawing scrums and hard tackles)

    Showering (there should be a law outlawing slippery surfaces and soap)

    Recreational Welding, grinding, skill sawing, drilling and belt sanding ( there should be a law making eye protection compulsory)

     

    These are all things which have higher injury and death rates than boating, when one excludes the truly ignorant and euphemistic "12 foot tinnie fishermen"
