Oh well only a week or so and the circus will be done and dusted at long last.

Really?  I’ll be disappointed. For some reason I seem to like a good sailing regatta.

I’m surprised that this site isn’t filled with discussion, analysis, conspiracy that goes with having a world premier sailing event on our door step.

this is a sailing forum after all.

One has to go to YouTube to get good discussion and it’s mostly with Poms (who are not bleating to much from having been eliminated).

  2. He was in Bermuda for AC 35. I was just listening to him commentate on the challenger final last night. I’m watching it all over again to make the thrill last longer.

the coverage was definitely better there.

when listening to communtary they talked about osc then a bit later, maybe minute 2 or 3 they get the umpire call about not holding course,End of the day best boat won. Does make wonder if LR let UK win a race though but cannot really see LR throwing one.

I’m not a conspiracy theorist normally but it does make you wonder, given how easily Prada outpointed INEOS in the last race yesterday but didn’t on Saturday.

Right-o, gotcha - but then why do the commentators only talk about VMG ??

We all use VMG as a proxy for VmC in the same way we use gas as a proxy for petrol even though it is a liquid.

over time language adapts based on convenience or laziness not accuracy.

until about 10 minutes ago I’d never heard of VMC.

There is already plenty of regulation, I hope you mean more enforcement?

Not sure what I mean. I should have said “I sometimes wonder whether there should be more...” and I suppose that does mean enforcement.

I’m not advocating for anything to happen was just musing out loud.

I sometimes wonder about the desirability of anyone getting in a boat without any ideas and heading out and causing “issues.”  There are a lot of threads on here of people wanting to know how to get started in yachting but a lot more buy a boat of some description and just go.

Also a fair few people get prosecuted when it goes badly wrong.

I just hate being on the wrong end of people not knowing how to keep clear, signal their intention early, don’t know how to anchor safely etc etc.

but we also like our freedom too...

Pretty sure the teams want you to keep a consistent course and they go around you. ETNZ def does.  If you suddenly turn to avoid a boat doing 40 as they take evasive action it could be 'fun'.

Oh. That’s surprising but sort of makes sense. Was there notice issued to that effect (that I missed)?

  7. It’s not just jet skis.
I had two situations in the Gulf during the last week. One was a launch and the other an enormous sailing cat (which did a beautiful gybe of their Code 0 after we bore away to let them past, so clearly are experienced). Also saw another showing no interest in giving way to Prada so Prada had to bear away and go around them.

I’m becoming a proponent of more regulation out there.

  8. The old kiwi mentality of getting out and doing it counts for a lot. But there is a lot that can go wrong and mistakes that get made. So I always recommend for late starter newbies to also join a boat that races regularly, as crew. It’s always about time on the water observing what is happening in different conditions.

This also helps build knowledge about what features of a boat would suit you.

And then read read read. There is so much to be gained from reading about other people’s experiences.

I find, in the wonderful world of boating, that if nobody else goes somewhere, then I wont either. Generally a damn good reason for it,and pray I wont be finding it.

ie, have never seen a vessel in there.

I’ll give it a go and let you know so that we can establish a new practice.

There is a public dock on the inside of Opua main wharf, hardly ever see anyone on it, you can get quite a big yacht in there.

Do you mean between the old store takeaways and the general store?  And you can get ashore (and back again obviously)? Sounds like a good option.

To do shopping, Paihia has supermarkets where as Opua has only the general store. So can anchor off Paihia, or go on a jetty(water is the finger at the end near Waitangi)but you wont loiter.Opua- you can go on the yacht club pontoon and get water(a levy $5-$10, )and there is booking book in clubhouse. So someone may have already booked half of the pontoon(meant to be able to get 2 boats on.)

Cheers for this. Probably didn’t make it clear that main thing is being able to get alongside somewhere as the girls will have, well, a LOT of stuff and our tender is a Takacat which is a bit damp for ferrying sleeping bags etc.

I’ll get in touch with the yacht club  I didn’t know about this.

  12. I have to pick up the family and reprovision, water etc on 13th January.
what’s the best way to do this?  The marina says they’re fully booked.

Is there a temporary berth/wharf nearby?

Perhaps someone has a 10 or 12 m berth I could borrow for an afternoon at Opua on 13th January?

  13. Total downer. Similar thing happened to me straight after our White Island race. Was having a snooze at 5am when a clown with a old wooden trawler clunked into our prod. It’s probably stronger than yours as no damage and he couldn’t give a toss as he was more interested in getting out fishing.

  14. I think one of the purposes of the regatta is to test the logistics as well as the boats.
Not sure about the on water stuff but the TV commentary was awful In places. They didn’t know how many laps to be done, the graphics didn’t line up with the markers, the commentators weren’t listening or couldn’t hear race radio so didn’t report what the judge was saying, on and on. Compared to Bermuda they have a looonnng way to go.

    Fantastic race watching nonetheless.
