  1. Can't get them haven't been able to for around 20 yrs if they are the alloy cast version plastic ones would be at least 15years since they were available. 43 was a real common size so you would be lucky to find anything out there.

I can supply some information here, as my son did an experiment as part of a class Science project. He used West System, which is nominally 5:1 ratio of resin to hardener. He then glued standard butt joints together with varying mixes, ranging from 1:1 to 10:1 ratios, and then measured the breaking point of the joints.

To my surprise, there was little difference until the ratios were well away from the norm. All joints from 3:1 to 8:1 were of equivalent strength. I think that there is a fair amount of leeway built in for us.

Of course, I have no idea how the ratios would pan out over time or indeed with exposure to the elements, particularly u/v.

I don't think you should be too concerned if you are slightly out.

Sorry It's not what he's talking about he's talking about once the resin is mixed is the weight ratio of resin to glass so if you have one square meter of 200gram glass you should use around 200grams of resin.

But if you are using chopstrand that ratio doubles the 1 to 1 ratio tends to only apply to woven and double bias clothes.

If you want to buy a Baltic lifejacket, you are currently out of luck.  Burnsco has no stock.

Not sure if this is temporary due to supply issues, or if they have pulled out of the market?

Burnsco don't stock Baltic at all stores only some.

Safety at Sea has stock as do other retailers around the country.

There is new models arriving shortly before summer so keep an eye out for those.

I'm impressed with my 6hp Suzuki 4 stroke even though it's .2hp short of the nztya rule. Pushes us at 8 knots full speed and a lot of bite manoeuvring. They had a deal going at $1999 might still. Lightest 6hp 4 stroke

Yup they are still on special too don't know why you would waste time on a second hand one at that price and a new 5 yr warranty. I have a suzuki bloody love it.

There should a class rule that if you run a business that supples bleeding edge gear to big boat campaigns you can’t put your brand of gear on the boat unless you supply the rest of the class with your gear at wholesale prices

And said sailmaker is supplying sails to the class at his cost price so he is doing his bit to help grow the class. The sails that are on all the old boats are at least 22 to 25yrs old so upgrading them is needed to keep the boats going. Rigs and foils also need to update as most foils were wooden cored and absolutely rooted as are the old alloy rigs and the carbon ones on offer if you assembled it yourself your up for about 20% the cost of buying off a mast builder so all the right things are been done to keep costs down.Any old usable gear is handed to other guys for no cost to them to get boats out there. At the end of the day there's limited supply of older boats out there in the 90s 10 boat nationals were common so only way to build a fleet with limited stock is build new boats or bring boats in from aussie for example. Still cheap yachting look at the cost of a new laser or starling for example or the cost of a new beiker moth at 40K plus this is a drop in the bucket. Should be 20 boats sailing by mid year so not bad for something that kicked off as a dream mid last year.

With ze Germans - i note that French Polynesia is up to 2,000+ cases of coronavirus at this point, which might indicate why they wanted to leave somewhere they knew they could stay,

With regards to the ultra-rich and their superyachts - while a single superyacht might well spend more than the entire cruising fleet of "normal" rich people that want to get here, they (the super rich) should also be told to politely f-off somewhere else.

Closed is closed is closed, with one rule for all.

Obviously your one eyed view means you don't rely on these guys been let in for income and been able to pay a mortgage and feed your family.

These guys provide income to allot of businesses which also you probably buy gear from as well for your boat but its these bigger boats that keep these businesses afloat so if they go tits up because these big boats cannot come in where will you get your gear from.

  7. We are really going to struggle in the Marine Industry this summer what Super yachts that are here and were supposed to stay here for the cup are now leaving as they can't get the owners in the country to use them so they are getting ready to leave now.

This government is so narrow mind and fixated on one goal but not looking at how the country is actually going to make money to get them out of this fiscal hole.

It is pure and simple poor communication and management of the situation by the Gvt. They are, very sadly, demonstrating this same level of bad communication and management in many situations.
So Super Yachts have been given the clearance to head to NZ. The smaller Yachts that are asking to be let in have had no reply via direct communication from the Gvt at all. They found out there was a "No" to them coming here only by reading the Gvt Website. That is very poor.

Super yachts haven't been given the go ahead that's also a massive issue they have to apply and insolate once arrived. The amount applying vs getting approved is very little.

It is going to depend on the mast transducer. If it is an original Nexus NX2 wired wind transducer then it is going to require a server to encode the pulse outputs. If it is a Garmin wired wind transducer then, yes, it connects directly to the NEXUS/instrument bus. I am not sure what color coding Garmin use in their cable. I have a short adapter cable that converts the Garmin Gwind cable to Nexus mast cable.

Edit: just found the specs for the Garmin mast cable. It's the same colors as the Nexus mast cable.

It doesn't matter with NX both the old and new masthead units work but either way you need to reprogrammed the wsi box.

Like wise if you plugged a wireless wind into NX2 server the server had to be programmed to look for the wsi box.

Has anyone got experience with the NX starter system with the WSI box and no server?  I've gone with a wired wind transducer but didn't get the brief on where to attach the cable.  The WSI box is full so I'm assuming it goes directly to the back of the instrument itself, can anyone clarify please?

    Thanks

You can't plug a wired wind into a standard wsi box as its always looking for a wireless masthead unit signal  the only way is to get the wsi reprogrammed so the wireless wind is turned off the mast cable is then wired into the network port piggyback colour for colour

  11. All hes taking about is sticking two bars out the back of the boat lashed to the stainless pushpit that the boat is then hung off i.e alloy tubes or large bamboo poles.

Then some blocks hung off these to pull the boat in and out of the water

A cheap arses version of what Sabre has posted above

NZ made but using Valmex (German material) which looks heaps better than PVC.

Might not quite fit OP's budget and size but for others worth a look..

Valmax is PVC its made by a German company called Mehler Technologies it used to the industry standard but there is other brands that have really good products also now.

There is now a material called TPU which you can weld like PVC but it has properties closer to Hyaplon but at half the cost.

What I have learnt about this stuff:

    - Molly's advice at Kiwi Yachting has cost me about $2k and I still don't have working windgear

    - before submitting your kit for testing at Kiwi Yachting, make a note what age you were when you took it in.  It won't make it any quicker but it does help when trying to work out how long it's taken.

    - Garmin Help is run by either a talking chimpanzee or a bot.  Whatever the answer is they are f*in useless

Please advise your progress on this.  My experience has led me to begin designing and building a Death Star.

And so what is the issue with your gear.

There's nothing available except wired wind transducers and speed and depth transducers Garmin have made everything else obsolete so pretty hard to service gear when you cannot get parts.

  14. The masthead unit will have failed most likely.

The new network units which you have just sit on the bus sending info direct to all displays.

The reason you are getting true wind speed is its calculated off boatspeed so its taking that as a speed seen as the windgear is not inputting

Check connections but normally its just a dead unit they are around $500 to replace

    Cheers

  15. I actually dealt with Sailors Corner quite a bit because I knew a lot of the staff. However it hurt when none of them were on duty and I had to pay full price. I’d usually skip across the road where the discounts applied no matter who served you.

Burnsco must be laughing all the way to the bank being the only chandler down there now. There are a few specialists but they don’t open the hours.

Yup and even a deticated fishing shop couldn't survive down there but now two big retailers have gone there could be an opportunity.

We aren't owed a massive amount but will be interesting to see if we get it

  16. One problem that imho appears quite clear here are people's perceptions...

You hit that on the head.

So as someone whose owed money from this liquidation so yes I have facts I fully want the liquidator to get as much money as possible so that other businesses that are owed money get paid.

Yes some gear might go cheap later on in the liquidation but it's up to the liquidator to get as much money back from the stock value as possible.
