  1. Thanks for the fun Matt! And the rum...

Re: Cam's post earlier - as the sole boat on the long course - the sea state was bigger on the other side of Bean Rock and it got exciting in the shallows around Motokorea Buoy, but nothing to get worked up about if you're not normally a rum racer!  Solid 30's with the odd gust. The cruising sails got a spanking!

  2. Right, modified plan:

    - Visit Ken

    - Thank Jon

    - Input line runs from spare tank to 3-way valve on existing input between fuel filter and engine

    - Return line runs from 3-way valve on existing return to spare tank

    - input and return lines of sufficient ID, and 2m long (in case of a need to use external cans)

    - spare input line has input filter on it

    - spare tank a 20+L tote tank

    - spare tank stored below, ready to switch into

I presume one should be mindful that the return will be contaminated for a time before the engine recovers, so might have to switch the return to the spare tank only after priming the new fuel and getting it running steadily on the spare input...

    thanks gents - B

All of the above can work and boats did for the RNZ
Just remember that most modern diesels return large amounts of fuel back to the tank so you need a twin line. Because if your switching to your 20ltr backup because your main tank has been contaminated with seawater, bug or just shaken up the years of crud or you have split a tank or line and filled your bilge.
If you don’t have a return line to your temporary tank/ jerrycan then half or more could end up being lost back into your contaminated main tank.
Exception to the above was the Yanmar 30? In Katana which didn’t have a return line, so only single line required

  3. Regarding RNI fuel, engine size, location etc, I recommend changing the petrol 9.8 Tohatsu 2HP outboard out for a diesel 45hp Yanmar inboard; also requires adding a few displacement tons...

Speaking of which - what are the thoughts on splitting a 'spare' fuel line and tank into the diesel?

    Current thought is:

    - Y splitter (or 3-way valve?), between fuel filter and engine

    - spare line has a shut off valve and input filter on it

    - spare line long enough to run into a tank 2m away

    - spare 20L tank either a jerry can or a re-purposed outboard tank

    - spare 20L stored in lazarette

Atamai will be carrying plenty of spare - given we primarily charge with the diesel; also, hot showers, cold drinks, etc. :)

  4. Very nice - always something desired when I had Revo Blues.

Only drawback I could see is that you lose the chance to use the extra traveler length for flattening the main in heavy wind, or vang sheeting type downwind sailing. The 830 being a big planing dinghy in heavy winds!

I’ve always disliked the way my traveller cuts the cockpit of my Ross830 in two, so I decided to fix it.
I realized that the mainsheet is actually limited by the safety lines and not the car position, so I could get away with a shorter one. That opened up a great solution.

  5. I'd be keen on a maxi mast repeater if available...the LED on one of ours cracked.

I have a bunch of old ones. Give me a week or 2 to finish up here and I will see what's left over.
The graphics seem very prone to screen failure. I have had 2 fail, going to try replacing it with a tridata.

  6. I'll do believe have to change my forum ID - now racing on Atamai.

This marks the first time I've been on the receiving end of a Ross 830 getting uppity - getting nipped by C-Jet on handicap in that race makes me a bit nostalgic! Huge congrats to Andy and crew.

Thanks also to CRA Grant and the SSANZ crew for that one - been a while since I had such a character building race.

    - B

Agree, big ups to what did look like some wise calls by the assorted boats.

Huge well done to the teams who punched on thru, what a bunch of hardarses you are....or just slightly deranged, probably both.

I'm also very glad everyone listen to my 'demand' at the briefing, that being 'I didn't want to see anyone in the news for the wrong reasons'. If only I could get my kids to listen to me that well :)

Damn happy I wasn't the RO for that one, Jon was welcome to it.

Well done him and his team in what can not have been a fun place at times

Good to see some Ross action on the podium. Thanks Jet and CU for that ;)

After 9 years and sh*t tons of fun, I'm putting RB on the market - who's keen? PM me so I know it comes from Crew.org and can get Matt his fees if I'm lucky.

Selling due to moving on to next phase of boating - bigger things that can't be done in a R830. However, gonna miss this shorthanded weapon of a boat. Annnnd, little known fact, she cruises well too!

    TradeMe Listing:

    https://www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/Listing.aspx?id=1581893383&ed=true

Full Listing I wrote before having to cut down for TradeMe below:

    For Sale:

    Ross 830

    Revolution Blues

    Sail # 5265

    Berthed at Westhaven

    $22,000 ono

Revolution Blues is a refined Ross 830, which is one of the sweetest hulls drawn by NZ’s Murray Ross. She has a ca. 1986 foam-core GRP construction, with kevlar reinforcements in the hull. A 7/8th fractional sloop by birth, she’s been modified with a 2m bowsprit (‘prod’) for asymmetrics and jumpers for running masthead extras. To fill the 10-15 knot gap upwind a #2 was added. She has a swept rig, with running backstays that are only required for tuning and in the heavy airs. She retains her self-tacking #3 and a #2 has been added to bridge between #1 and #3 in moderate winds. Extra displacement was added with a ‘strap on’ bulb - giving improved shorthanded stability and the option to run larger sails.

Revolution Blues is currently set up as a racer/cruiser, perfect for the Auckland Scene:

For racing: Revolution Blues has won many series and races and been on the podium of a good number of the rest. She has been Cat 3 for much of my ownership and competes with larger boats and often gets the better of them - especially when racing shorthanded. Due to an efficient setup and a self-tacking #3 she is a weapon for singlehanded racing. When in race mode she planes and surfs readily, with fractional and masthead spinnakers and a masthead gennaker - which leads to some fast speeds downwind. However, her real advantage is upwind, where she has a few points on the pure 8m downwind boats, especially in heavy airs. It’s no surprise that she’s the current top Ross 830 on Racetrack.

For cruising: My family and friends have cruised in Revolution Blues from the Bay of Islands to the Bay of Plenty, with no corner of the Hauraki Gulf untouched. She has all of the gear required as a ‘pocket cruiser’ to comfortably and safely  - from an oversized Manson Supreme anchor, an efficient galley with a built-in fridge, a built in head with a holding tank, a grunty autopilot, expandable berths (3-6 depending on setup), loads of storage, a solar power system, 80L water storage, new and refreshed squabs, a boom tent, a great stereo, an open layout inside, and more.

After many happy years of ownership the time has come to move on to a bigger boat for ‘bigger’ aspirations. Who’s the lucky next owner? I would like to see this on to a new owner that appreciates a boat of the vintage that is ready for adventures and fun - hence selling as a complete package. Currently at Westhaven - if the purchaser needs a Westhaven berth the current one might be available, best to enquire with the Marina Management.

$22k takes the lot and at full price I’ll throw in a year’s membership at Richmond Yacht Club if the goal is to continue to sail at Westhaven. Offers for part of the complete kit will be entertained, but only as a negotiation as to inclusions. Better pictures to come soon.

    Latest News

Next race in the 2016-17 Vinings Marine / RYC Singlehanded Series is the RYC Singlehanded Race on Sunday, October 30th at 1PM. This is a harbour course starting and ending at Westhaven - this year we've added extras to the mix, so be sure to read the race NOR here (part of the RYC Harbour Race Series).

The Auckland Marathon is on the same day, with closures at Westhaven 'till around 11am, check here for more details and plan ahead for the inevitable delays.

Series entrants are already signed up, others wanting to join can enter the series or the race at RYC. This is the third race in the series- with three drops, it's not too late to get a series score - we'll be taking series entrants up to the start of the next race (BBYC's Singlehanded Around Motuihe Race).

  10.

Thought I would do the solo series this year after seeing all the guys out last year.
Looked really wall organised, website, distinctive shirts, BBQs etc ...

Now I can't even seem to find what is happening for the race this Sunday.
Am I looking in the wrong place? Have I been left off a mailing list?
    Anyone got any info?

Richard Limbrick / Cool Change is looking after the series this year - he's got great new shirts, stickers and a host of events planned for the 2016-17 Vinings Marine / RYC Singlehanded Series. Contact RYC for more details - we'd love to have more multis out.

  11.

    Thanks, I did find that...
I forgot that the solo series is just a tack on to other races.
I was expecting something like last year: www.soloiq.org.nz/
Just found the NOR for the Harbour Race on Sunday.

    Clive,

Same NOR format as previous 4 years - but I hear that we need a better web guide.

Vinings Marine is the sponsor this year and we are working on the new site... in the meantime I'll put all relevant info on the RYC website:

    http://richmondyc.org.nz/racing/info/singlehanded-series/

Hope to see you and Voom out this Sunday.

And, yes, there will be road closures on Sunday due to marathon, but open again for the race, so prepare:

'Westhaven Drive is closed for the Auckland Marathon from 6.30am-10.40am on Sunday 30 October. Get full details of the closure at http://a.smartmailpro.com/link/oaf756tj7/f5dp2hff1p. '

    Cheers,
