  1. Before I tow my boat back to the compound, I may aswell take the opportunity to venture elsewhere, I have Great Mercury Island in my sights.

Can you share some local knowledge on the place? Any must do's or must do nots? Is it all private land? Anchorages, fishing spots, dive spots?

The plan is to launch at Koutuna ramp, head over and spend 3 nights exploring fishing and diving.

  2. I will challenge you to a sound off!

I run a single 3 inch bluetooth speaker cable tied to my Bimini. It might have up to 30W of power when it's fully charged.

The bass is so fierce it creates its own apparent wind I can sail in any direction, it can flatten 2 m following seas, rattle a scallop out of its shell and cause a reverse in tidal flows.

  3. Good suggestions, thanks.

"Getting up the Whangarahi Stream to Wharf Road is also a good party trick for a trailer yacht"

My home town! I know why you like that stream eruptn, it leads directly to the bottom pub! And a petrol station, which is nearly as good for "re-fueling". Just don't hang around to long, when the tide goes out there, it goes out.

"Kawau Island through to Mahurangi (heading up to Warkworth for a coffee is always fun in a trailer yacht) and the exploring of the smaller islands and wrecks."

Where are the wrecks? Are they on the charts? Can you recommend a couple of good ones to aim for?

  4. Having built cedar strip and radius ply as per Dudley Dixs designs I would not go cedar strip again in a hurry. I know you can get nice hull shapes and have all sorts of other advantages, but if you want a quick build with a good fair result with bugger all fairing and sanding then radius chine ply is the way to go.

As for room inside theres the age old adage of you can have 2 of three things grace, pace or space.

Boat design is all compromise especially when your looking at smallboats, The Didi 26 has similar room to a Nolex 25 and is a lot faster, with more righting moment etc. No my boat won't keep up with true sports boats as it hasn't got trapeze wings and a 25kg keel. But it keeps me happy and thats what counts.

As for cost I'm not sure what it would cost now but I estimate it would work out about the same as a good 2nd hand Nolex to build. As always the hull is the cheap bit, its all the other bolt on stuff that costs.

When I decided to build this design best fitted my wants, maybe something else out there now but I haven't seen it.

    Hi Panic

Are you still on this forum? I'm looking for info on the 26 thinking of building. I read about Panic knot, and I'm told it's now in Auckland. Could you Pm me I would be keen for a chat.

  5. Hi everyone, the Catalina 7 is home for a bit of maintenance, and a new colour for the stripe and window surrounds. Then it's back up to the compound for another season of yachting adventures.

I'm looking into a boat upgrade (aren't we all??) this year or early next. Planned club trip to Great Barrier with other trailer yachts and keelers coming up end of November. I also want to go to Kawau island this season.

Anyone want to suggest a destination I should visit and blog about?

I'm thinking of bringing the action camera and videoing my adventures this year and maybe sharing them, Who would be interested in that?

  6. I'm getting the hunger to upgrade, on the menu is a wood R780. I'm not sure about a wood boat though, Are they to be avoided as general opinion about wood boats seems to suggest?

People say "high maintenance" what does that mean exactly?

What checks should be done in trying to determine any possible rot?

Is it best to just stick to popular opinion and stick with glass?

  7. Here's a quote from the article,

"I see it on a daily basis - it's convinced me that what I do has the capacity to add value to people's lives at a level that transcends materialism."

it's great that his begging is adding value to people's lives, if only this country had more beggers we could all be enriched beyond our materialistic ways. Who needs materials to build roads, education and health systems. Transcend people TRANSCEND!!!!

  8. I missed something?

So after several of us have tried helping Shane, he has spat the dummy?? Or am I not understanding something?

A second almost duplicate thread was created with slightly different wording.

I thought the constructive criticism from the first thread was relevant so posted the link from that thread onto the new one, and said "what these people said".

I got the reply through the email notification, but the link was dead. To be fair the mods did him a favour removing it.

I do hope he starts a blog or you tube channel though, I think it's awesome what he is doing and wish I had been brave enough to do it before I became a boring adult with adult responsibilities.

  9. Hi Shane

I edited the swear words and attitude from your reply so it doesn't get pulled again.

"do you think everone online asking for help should not get it? theres a lot off persons out there raising money online on youutub. "

    Firstly peace brother chill out,

Secondly I agree with you 100% about people on You tube asking for money and that it is quite ok to do so. It's previously been mentioned earlier in this thread suggesting you could do the same?

You will surely agree that most of those you tubers are first giving everyone something for free, wether it's a laugh, entertainment or some technical know how.

When I edit videos it takes 1 hour of editing for just 1 minute of finished footage, add in camera costs, editing software, laptop and the hassle of filming, then you can see the You tubers are actually earning the right to ask for support to keep it going.

Someone suggested you could do a blog?

I would be keen as to read a blog from you! You clearly have passion, Check out my one, it's done on a free site called Wordpress, all the photos are done on my phone and the last two blogs were written on my phone. I'm no writer, I failed school C English, If it wasn't for spell check it would probably be unreadable lol. I paid an extra $60 to get rid of ads and increase storage size but you don't need to do that.

You just need a smart phone and some WIFI and you are into it. Put a link to your give a little page on your blog asking for support to keep the adventure going, Take us all along with you on your journey.

Do you have a smart phone? If not I think it would be quite reasonable to ask on here if anyone is upgrading their phone, they might send it your way for free and be rewarded with some epic images. I would send you mine if work didn't own it.....

  10. Back out of the house deal

Tell them you have a boat in your waters or some suchlikes

You can add two rooms to your existing house by buying Tigre, and they are mobile rooms to boot

I like the way you think
