  1. Ah yes my boating scenario... Well yesterday was the last race Team Mercenary had on the boat, thanks Sean for lending it to us for one last ride...

As to whats next. I was hoping a 100foot canter, but my bank manager wouldnt lend me enough. So im not sure now!! Tossing up all options at the moment, but it is moving from the sportboaty side more towards the cruising side. Maybe an 88, maybe not so working it all out! No exciting news here yet...

  2. Could you not change the top plate hole spacings? So that the fin can stay in the same place but the bolt holes are 60mm moved either side of the keel floors?

If you are moving the fin aft then you could always keep the bulb further forward so it stays where it is meant to be too?

Although watching the other 930's sail upwind in the simrad with the helms around their necks as they try reach upwind we did come to the conclusion the keel fins could be a touch more aft to keep the balance a little nicer on the stern hung rudders!

  3. I must say, impressive tim. But remember you have until end of june next year to get 30kts or no beer! Those sail rocket thingys spent an age chasing less than a knot to get to 50kts. You are still 4 knots away from your target yet! Good luck

What are you doing forward of the washboards!!

You did it Tim! Just not quite before July 2012... Surely Russell still needs to buy beer though!

  4. Well what a weekend... And one hell of a dusty mess i spent this arvo cleaning up.

Saturday i started "Re-Structuring" the Mercenary. This involved Acro-Props downstairs to take the load off the main bulkhead and cabin top so i could strengthen it up all in the name of getting a stiffer structure to take the ever increasing rig loads.

Next i glued in the Carbon and Foam Knee's i had pre-made the week before. A few layers of carbon Uni's and Carbon DB and some foam - Light and seriously strong. These got glued in where the window mullions used to be to try to stop the cabin top bending and twisting. And to stop the windows popping when the fatties jumped on the cabin top. - Job done and they are seriously grunty and strong. PERFECT :-)

Then i decided to turn the two piece main bulkhead that was split from floor to ceiling into a single piece bulkhead to transfer the loads from the Rig better without bending the boat. Sounds like an easy job but it turned into a bit more of a major. I Scarfed in a piece of plywood in the middle and then laminated a new Ring frame right from Cabin Side to cabin side.

This is now all glued in and carboned into the boat and i await testing it on tuesday night racing before fairing and painting it after the white island race next weekend.

    - Oh thats right in amongst all this i managed to go for a sail on the new Equilibrium - Very very cool boat and i quite like pushing buttons and going sailing for 2 hours in 25+ knots without pulling a winch handle out once :-P And i mowed the lawns and all the usual guff too. Now im sitting down and relaxing with a cold Mount Gay and coke to relax!

  5. And at the end of the day the old one only snapped because it fell down the case note because it wasnt strong enough... So spending the time preventing it fall down the case is better than thinking about what Core is better aye mr Wolf!

  6. Did some yacht race to Russell? Then turned around and motored home, Meant to get to kawau. had an oppsie and hit a big wave, outboard went crashing into the sea. Next thing in Tutukaka rebuilding the outboard and then headed home via Kawau to watch the oval ball get kicked around!

Huge weekend and a great tour! Sleep time now...

  7. Major major major rum race friday night meant a whole lot of holding the couch down to the floor on saturday... That couch would walk away if i got off it, so had to do the right thing and look after it all day. Then today we took mercenary out and dominated the BBYC fleet, then farewelled a very good mate Tommy K who is heading over to europe to join the superyacht circus. A good night had by all!

  8. Marshy, were you guys running any boards down wind? Seems you guys could haul us in pretty quickly downhill, although you are bigger with a sh#t load more HP I guess.

Yeah i think a sh*t load of power, more sail area in the main and probably the same size if not slightly bigger chute. With probably the same wetted surface (Hulls arent that much different). And its pretty timid downhill so you can keep the foot to the floor.

Man that last run of the last race was awesome! If we didnt have a stuck winch on the gennaker sheet we mighta got ya but you were smoking maddock!

  9. No one has yet commented on the mast rake.

It kind of looks like quite a lot of rake, especially seen as the Rig Tension that goes on the Sidestays is not on in that photo.

It also looks like the mast is too short!

The mast is too short, i think you should give it to me and build another one...

I think the rake will be fine, In that photo i suspect the rig wasnt in the middle (When we stuck it in quickly we never pinned it off, just had it on rough lashings) so i think it was off to port, that with the boat sitting on the port Ama gives the illusion of too much rake.

It will be interesting now that the boat isnt so nosey to see if you need as much rake to keep the bows out or to make it go upwind. I think alot will change and it will take some time to get used to tuning the mast again. Moreso with twin rudders etc now so the helm will feel heaps different, and hopefully a little lighter than it used to be!

  10. Ah Tim, my job was the easy bit! Tie it on and let the crane do the work! Was actually good fun and so easy with Tony the crane operater a seriously cool operator! That crane is a wicked piece of kit! We need it to stay there perminantely for stuff like that!
