Yes, but a lot easier with steering. Maybe a tiller pilot type as a temporary solution?

What BP says, I will add if you are planning on solo, you will be knackered by the time you hit Cape Reinga and over the top you have tides, currents and lots of marine traffic to keep an eye on.

AIS would really take some pressure off in a solo situation but it is an investment.

Have you just bought the boat? Does it have an inboard engine, if it has sat for a while you def want to look at the fuel, going off shore is gonna stir up the fuel tank, carry spare filters

You will really have to pick a good weather window, getting the snot kicked out of you solo in a 30 ft boat will be no fun at all.

  2. Have to say yeah I read the reports.

These were pretty well prepared crews.

But, If you are gonna go offshore in a yacht race considering all the money you throw at that effort for a result,  to get into the short chop in a Gulf Stream,  have shitty things start to happen, then develop an engine issue and have the engine quit from bug,  seriously.

This is almost Fuel Tanks 101.

A lot of these boats in the Northern New England Area of the States  spend six months on the hard over a brutal winter and have relatively benign sailing conditions the rest of the year.

Then they go offshore and the soup gets stirred, I would think having your fuel polished before going offshore would be a prudent move. That or FULL fuel tank preventing bug the opportunity to make your life difficult

BTW, Seem to recall a J 111 ? returning back from Fiji to AKL a few years ago that had its rudder fall out and the boat go to the bottom, perhaps there's a pattern.

Yup I am sure, the local Altex Rep has been involved with the poor performance I have experienced and clearly blamed a recent formulation change. Was more a matter of a particular ingredient being removed or substituted with a lesser active product.

This could get interesting, the product you thought you bought and yet the manufacturer changed a critical ingredient   without really letting anyone know. hmmmmn.

    What could possibly go wrong?

That has Law Suit City Arizona writ all over it.

Pity Crew don't have a legal arm,  taking on the shysters and bullshitters is really the last bastion. providing some level of  of pushback otherwise the fuckers have won.

I only say that witnessing the almost total capitulation of a democracy due to ignorance and apathy in the USA, please lets not allow that sh*t to happen here.

Update.  We went down to SO for the pre summer pre seasonal clean up and took the new jackets down, brought the old jackets back.

Note to everyone with inflatable life jackets.  If you can't remember when you last serviced them, take 20 minutes in the next couple of weeks to do so.  The images inform.

    IMG_20221005_183306_1.jpg

    IMG_20221005_183313.jpg

In the service its good idea to blow them up and see that they hold air for at least 12 hours then replace the corroded canister.

At service time I would often encourage wives and kids to pull the lanyard so they see what to expect at inflation time

Don't forget the small plastic sacrificial safety inserts in the firing mechanisms that protect by providing resistance against accidental inflation.

Autos all have a dissolving pill that when exposed to water allows the jackets to deploy these often get compromised when stored in humid environments and should be checked also.

There's lots of You Tubes showing you life jacket specific instructions and maintenance tips.

Because the canisters and firing mechanisms are out of sight,  should not mean out of mind,  you should look at them regularly.

Take the opportunity before you have to use it in an actual emergency.

I'm genuinely surprised this was someone moored in the river.... just the sheer audacity/stupidity of stealing from your neighbours and then putting their stuff out on your lawn....

Yeah,  need to keep track of him tho, where's he gonna move next? Being outed as a thief and sticking around maybe hazardous to ones health.

He may be wishing for jail because he will soon get tired of visits from yachties in the area that have had things go missing, people that are more than willing to make his miserable life even harder

As my dad used to say, "Never sh*t on the doorstep son" , it sounds like this lowlife missed that memo.

Possibly cause we know how the poor brown people are dieing, just no one gives a sh*t. Strewth, half of England is throwing bricks at Cops to stop them being allowed to live next door.

We also know exactly how over 40,000 have died in Palestine, but for some strange reason the whole western world is falling over themselves to supply more weapons so some more can be killed. For some reason no-one wants to talk about that either, I suspect I'll be torn a new one for daring to even mention the genocide, but each to their own.

There is a high degree of mystery and curiosity as to how a 180ft superyacht managed to sink. Most people would think discussing that is a fairly safe topic. Especially on a sailing site. No?

All for that and have commented on Sailing Anarchy but the site has now been flooded with newbies, armchair engineers, experts that obviously have no clue about that they wish to talk about and of course the conspiracy theorists.

Talk about giving a moron a mouth piece to confirm their stupidity, and No I'm not calling you the moron.

Just find the trail by Public Opinion thing getting a little out of control not to mention the dichotomy of 7 rich folks drowning in tragic circumstances after celebrating Lynch being acquitted in a multi billion dollar stoush with HP vs 29,727 ( Thanks Aardvarkash ) poor folk drowning in the last ten years seeking a better life.

  7. Somewhat ironic that a superyacht sinks and everyone's suddenly positioning for the coming  lawsuit city Italy tour.

Meanwhile boat loads of poor brown people fleeing shithole countries in search of a better life and freedom, sink daily but they have been reduced to a mere comma in the ongoing narrative obsessed with the how and why a rich dude died on his very large special boat.

A large theatrical song and dance will proceed but at the end of the day we will come back to the quaint term Perils of the Sea, occasionally unexpected sh*t will happen.

You can try and plan for most of it but every so now and then,  mother nature is going to circumvent it all.

Bloody sad they are going to try and hang this all on a well regarded NZ Captain.

Ever wonder why insurance keeps going up?

Rats, we left Ft Lauderdale 12 months ahead of Andrew.  But went back to Central America just after Mitch. The destruction was "total ".

Yep the devastation post event is mind blowing, think its only a matter of time before one takes out a larger built up city with skyscrapers and the like especially east coast of Florida and further north, that for sure will not be pretty.

Ft Lauderdale was a good place from a Marine logistics and support point of view, the network of canals and the intercoastal was fascinating but the State seemed to attract a disproportionate amount of liars, thieves and vagabonds- by the end I was glad to get out.

Read Hiscock. " be out of the Caribbean before the hurricane season. "

And the seawater temps seem to be breeding stronger, faster forming,  more intense ones, especially in that neck of the woods.

Was in the Caribbean post Hugo, on St Croix you didn't have birds chirping  a month later.

Got caught in Nantucket when Bob blew through, good prep removal of sails,  lines doubled,  every anchor out and allowing for the change in direction after the eye passed over.

I did not stay on the boat, there was 70' sailboats heeling 25 degrees at the docks, and the harbour looked like a bowling alley the following morning, we were lucky.

Was in Ft Lauderdale when Andrew went through, got sick and tired of prepping boats for hurricanes about three named ones after that,  got out and haven't been back.

I hear just about every major insurer has given up on Florida.

The above vid should be shown to every sailor contemplating parking in the mangroves and riding things out on board.

  10. Just East of the Harbour Bridge North Shore side, couldn't see what sailboat because driving.

Have to wonder why don't the moored boats lash the drums or something.

Anyway just putting it out there hoping it gets fixed.

Hopefully that sends a message to the muppets out there driving boats like they would their cars.

Proper look out or pay big bucks.

Crying shame the ferry skipper's a paraplegic requiring care 24/7 and ending a nice little retirement gig plus the ferry boat went to the bottom.

When you consider the costs of just those two factors seems like Onopotos skipper got of pretty light.

  12. Firebird and Parts4engines are onsellers

If you want it- go to the manufacturer.

    HDI

     https://hdimarine.net/product/gm-stainless-steel-mixing-elbow/

I ordered direct online with HDI and got the elbow in about 3-4 days from what I understand firebird rep them in NZ and add another cog to the whole process that may or may not be as fast.

Word is the guy that heads up HDI was outraged at the price OEM wanted for his onboard exhaust elbow and he was in the  Stainless casting business so he made his own and pretty soon had himself a nice line of business.

He does all sorts Yanmar Volvo, Yanmar, Ford Lehman, Cummins,  Caterpillar  the list goes on

Ovlov wanted from memory $767 Plus GST for a like for like replacement, dealing with HDI direct I got one ex US in cast stainless landed for around $450.00 and they included the high temp gasket nicely packed in a CD case.

    I was impressed.

It’s a trophy not a Boston whaler and not a launch either .  Heavy solid boats and it shows when you look at the difference in damage to either vessel .

The vessel is a Boston Whaler Conquest 305 and it would appear the boat is built like the proverbial brick out house considering the relative damage to the vessel compared to that of the ferry.

I am guessing there may be some delamination below that gel coat though.

  14. I find it ironic that they want to ping us the responsible boat owners while ignoring the commercial shipping coming and going with infestations on a hull 50-100 times the size of your average yacht.

And they dump ballast water spreading the crap far faster than we could ever do.

Not helped by the commercial pressures applied by commercial operators to continue to operate in council environments.

I'm thinking it would be better to target the commercial end users; lets face it there are tens of  thousands of them so paying cents on the dollar wouldn't be a big deal.

The average boatie on the other hand seems fair target  the council seeks to shift the load to us, while taking away options for haul outs amongst other things and now they want inspect suspect hulls, they could start with all of the obviously neglected weed farms scattered around the mooring fields.

Of course they know there's no money at the end of that option.

Its B.S.  there needs to be some major pushback.

  15. That Westhaven microburst clip if you look at the upper right you see a 140’ sailing yacht get its spreaders wet.

The force of the hit broke several dock lines.

One person on board , an engineer as I recall got the vessel off the dock and anchored in the fairway while they sorted things out.
