  1. Same as everywhere I believe but personally you leave a marina with a pump out facility and then proceed to dump your sh*t well, it’s just sh*t.  
     

    Anyhow as an ex Aucklander I can’t moan too much.  
     

    lovely day down here now crowded anchorages and plenty of sunlight.

    This summer has been particularly bad.  Here in the Marlborough Sounds, i've had two ocassions in two weeks where boats did not adhere to Port to port or even know green and red markers which meant I took evasive actions and then got the why did you do that look.  Lots of shiny new Stabi's with no clue out on the water.  The bay we live in has a strict 5 knot limit which is broken each and every day by jet skis and boats, harboar master useless, education = mixed results.  The problem is we live waterfront which means we could be a target so I'm inclined not to take any action and live with the problem.  

    Followed a 60 foot well known Auckland Riv stink pot owned by a prominent lawyer out of Picton last week that decided emptying it's holding tanks just out of picton was a good idea, dusgusting. sh*t all over the water complete with paper yuck.  I reported and photographed that one.  

    The growing number of dick heads on the water and increased media coverage of drownings are going to mean more legislation for all of us responsible water users. The take away for me this Summer is that Money does not equal common sense.  Stop sending cashed up Aucklanders down here to spoil paridise! :-)

Booboo, you have calibrated it right?  It should have modes, if it's in 'race' mode or high sensitivity mode it will react a lot, however it's a long time since we had one of those course computers so I forget the terms.  This sounds exactly what happened to us mid ocean the dam thing just hunts and hunts and won't steer a course and won't apply full rudder.  We corrected the issue with a full depower and calibration.  Don't assume the ST60 is working correctly either they are dog's of things. Ours showed correctly but the output to the autopilot was something else.  I suspect the compass maybe the issue in your install here though.

    For anyone who has a plotter that "requires a reset" or resets itself. This is a problem on your boat, or with your unit. It's a fault, and should be addressed.

    Hey IT i had the same answer from L&B. Basically they said a power problem.  I put our work power analyser onto it and measured the power over 7 days and recorded no drops or major voltage fluctuations.  When presented with that they replaced the unit and that solved it.  One thing I found out was that you need to install the earth wire on the older Raymarine screens as without that it would not know the difference between rain and finger.  Made a big difference.  

    The issue I had was with the latest Lighthouse software upgrade it stuffed my plotter, reinstalled it the other day and now works fine without dropping out.

There are tablets and tablets.  The Apple products are expensive but last and work.  I can verify this as I've had the same Ipad Pro on board the yacht for 4 years and it's seen salt water many times. I really don't have the daylight viewing issues that people discuss here.  I just finished a round the South Island trip and simply swear that the Ipad has a better user interface is more reliable and user friendly.  That may have to do with the fact that my chartplotter is located out in the cold cockpit.  Yes the ipad can be fragile but I'd suggest that if your chartplotter was designed to carry round that would be also.  

    My Ipad Pro battery lasts all day but then I don't have it on all the time, I just view it when I need to. Most of time it lives in its cradle I built with the 3d printer plugged in.  

    My Raymarine Axiom on the other hand almost always had a daily melt down on this trip and needed to reboot.  It was not happy with the recent software upgrade.  The Wifi radar on the other hand is excellent.  

    My Ipad connects to the boat Wifi via Vesper AIS and will happily read all the instruments data including AIS, wind, depth etc wirelessly.  I look at some of the systems these days and they are so complicated.  I'd much rather have a simpler system that just works with limited things to fail.  If the chartplotter shits itself you can't grab the spare and start using it straight away.  The bonus with an Ipad is that it's always connected and I can watch netflix via downloaded movies, check weather and send the odd text also.  

    I can also review sailing performance vs. polar and can control the autohelm via my smart watch.  

    Look at what a lot of the solo guys are using now, tablets just make sense.

Totally agree tablets are excellent.  They are simple, cheap, can easily be waterproofed and can replicate instruments easily.  In my mind they are better especially for tricky eyeball navigation.  I use a few of the ipad Mini's you can easily hold them in one hand and steer with the other if you have to :-) 

    Interestingly we hardly turn on our chartplotter.  I tend to only turn it on if using the radar.

    I agree 100%.  Many of the hatches on the market really are not up to it.  I can't see how this blanket approach of smacking shutters onto big windows will help.  Take a catamaran with proper engineered toughened glass for instance, versus a production boat where the hatches are purchased off a supplier and simply screwed into place with backing beads.  Or look at a Garcia, big windows, but properly engineered.  In other words, fit for purpose. 

    This is a bullshit solution.  Why not simply look at each installation and make a call on it.  I think they are simply suggesting that the Cat 1 inspectors are not up to that or 'trained' and therefore a blanket 'solution'.  I really am sick of this approach in NZ, the place is driving me mad.  Who wrote this drivel?

    What’s the price difference between Eberspacher and a knock off Chinese equivalent $1000 or so there is a glaring answer to that price gap durability reliability and warranty comes to mind.
    Noiseyness comes free with the cost saving alternatives.

     

     

    Yip which is why we avoid dealing with Chinese suppliers wherever possible.  I'm sure there are some good ones out there from China as far as diesel heaters go but it will cost you more by the time you buy a few of them. 

  9. I've gone down the Chinese route and got burnt.  They are not all the same and many of the ones peddled here in NZ are not supported at all.  The models and parts change all the time and the controllers are rubbish.  

    Noise is an issue as well with the cheaper ones.  

    The manual that came with the unit I purchased was not relevant to the model supplied and the auckland based distributor was down right rude and had no idea how to support the product.  If you want to do a quality installation, go European.  You won't regret it.

    Yes but that's not the point BP.  Those in the public sector almost and I do mean almost have a guaranteed job.  Those in the private sector, not so.  That is a huge difference and the point I was trying to make.  I agree fully that we need public servants however it's pretty rich when the public sector are bleating about how bad they have it.  At least they have a job.  Many in the private sector don't and won't for a long time.  

    As always times like this affect the small guy and the poor, the rich well not much.  I don't begrudge or belittle anyone but I'm honestly sick of hearing about all the so called 'heros' out there at the end of the day they are doing their jobs..... well done to you... you have a job and will get paid for it. 

    The bite is not now, it will hit us in 2-3 months time, we will see how smart people are then.

  11. Basically sailing is so wide and generic, like boating.  The general idea is water is dangerous so therefore ban it.  Surfing was banned which is crazy and probably now back on as the backlash was strong.  You don't hear of many surfers getting in the sh*t.  

    I assume that when we go to Level 3, the marina's will at least allow access?  Generally I find boating is more dangerous in the marina than out in the ocean, wiring and gas projects, drinking, falling into the water etc etc :-).   

    I don't think many people are 'chilling' right now Kevin unless of course you have a cushy government position living off the tax payer tit.  If you own a business or employ people or have a bank breathing down your neck the 'chill' rate will be fairly low. 

    Any activity that allows one to revitalise one's perspective on life is important and you can't claim that running, surfing or biking are more important than sailing.  The unseen factors here that no one will care about will be the depression, suicide and divorce rates in 8 weeks time when we get back to the new normal.  Maybe at least it will give Herald and Stuff something other than Covid 19 and Trump to report about.  

    I'm all for people using common sense and get out and about on ya boats, what's the worse that can happen?  The police have no power and at best will slap you with a don't do that again.

    Probably right!  Point is he's pissed about the very short notice on closure.  Anyhow it's sorted now as he's been able to remotely access the boat via wifi from the carpark and turn things off apparently.  Be interesting to see if berth holders can get rental relief due to no access.

The lack of silence from Marinas is amazing.  I'd suggest that given there is no access, there should at least be a rental reduction.  I'm also interested in the insurance situation given lack of access to check and insure your yacht is safe?  What if it sank due to a leak and bilge pump failure?  

    I have a friend who's brand new battery bank will be overcharging as he's just installed Lithium batteries and left the solar on them without a regulator as he was expecting to get back to the boat in time but was not able to.  Who covers that cost?  Is it the same all over the Country with access, have marinas locked boat owners out?
