  1. The band on my one came off.  Had to put a new band on but the Yanmar guy who serviced it said I hardly needed to worry about it as the leak alarm would let me know and also that it would only be a slow leak if you got one.  It's quite a basic seal really.

  2. It's the same service just 4G and uses the cell networks for connection.  If you are using a hotspot you wont' notice anything greater in speed or service I'd suggest.  Nothing new really at all.

  3. I sailed through that stuff in 2006/7 around Tonga, was really abrasive, some of the chunks were huge.  At the time we had a steel boat, really worried about losing the paint but it was fine, however it really did clean up the antifoul.

  4. Im almost embarrassed to say this but the last three offshore passages i have done entirely using marinermx on my phone. Plus everything in between.

You are right BP.  Apps work and will be the future I think

    Of course.

However, IMO I'd not use an ipad as a primary nav device. They are a great tool and the mobility is useful. Navico's radars (Broadband, B&G, Simrad) dont do well over wifi, there is just too much data. However, if you want basic, OCPN runs fine on a raspberry pi, and remote screen software from that to a tablet works well. Navionics is a long way behind OCPN in abilities - weather routing, polars, radar, and more than 20 other plugins for whatever functionality you want, all free...

The reason that many like this is charts. Charts  for the world are very expensive, and Navionics simply turn them off with no notice if your licence expires...

I sort of agree IT however we all have back up GPS systems and charts, but to be fair i've had many more issues with chart plotters than I've ever had with Ipads, the recent Raymarine updates are a great example of complete BS.  For non IT experts they are excellent compared with their complicated but cheaper sisters raspberry pi's etc.  Have a look at https://www.weather4d.com/  it covers most of the areas you raise and on an Ipad.

My Wifi radar works fine by the way.  I like simplicity and lack the time or skills to worry about the other stuff.

Navionics on my ipad don't turn off, I haven't paid a subscription fee for 2 years and it still works?

Different points of view I know but these are just my thoughts.

  5. Many, if not most, of the long term cruisers use opencpn....

True but the world is changing fast.  Navionics now supports AIS on Ipad.  We are toying with using https://www.weather4d.com/ on new boat and ditching chart plotters altogether.  The Radar runs on wifi and app so don't see much use for a chart plotter any longer.  Saves a lot of cash and you still have all the instruments on the back bone and AIS.

Besides I rarely use the Chartplotter on existing boat.  The ipad is just easier to use.

  6. Looks good.  I just like the idea of not polishing and minimal cleaning.  No fading also.  I was not considering doing a hand paint job, does not really compare with spraying.

  7. Be curious to know what the mechanical failure is.

A bulkhead or rudder would make me a tad uncomfortable, but engine or inability to charge? hmmm.

Solo, and no windvane. Inability to charge could get boring very fast. No autopilot. No sleep, etc etc.

Trying to think of a way to not make disparaging comments about other peoples taste in boats, but I wouldn't have thought the hull shape and characteristics of a Bavaira 42 would be ideal for a voyage from NZ to Papeete...

And that is not a criticism of European production boats, there are some very good models by the big volume producers. More a comment on the beam and hull shape of the B 42 for a lot of trans-ocean crash-bash (and to be honest, strength and build quality). How much of a voyage that long, and that destination, would end up on the wind?

Still, each to their own, he is out there doing something, and I am walking distance from my nice warm fire.

It's a long passage, might simply come down to wanting to get off the boat before a smaller problem becomes a bigger one. I've done that passage and it's a boat breaker, we never got off the wind really the whole way.  It was a daily job just keeping on top of chafe and wear and tear.  We also had issues with rudder bearings and also leaks.

The B42 is not too bad a boat, anyhow i'd rather be in that than something wooden, Geez the amount of whales we saw was incredible and we never hit one of them which was amazing.
