  1. Personally, I'd buy a Volvo with sail-drive.

I've got a Volvo MD3020, or is that 2030? (its the 3 cyl, 30hp) with a S120 saildrive and its a great wee donk. Ive had two major issues with mine and both were caused by operator neglect so I cant blame the engine.

My biggest gripe in the early stages of ownership (and during the rebuild) was the cost of parts, however once I found an overseas OEM supplier I can now get parts delivered to my door in 5 days at 30% the local cost, hence my gripe has gone away.

This little 30hp with a folding two blader on the saildrive has pushed my 42fter up the harbour into a 35knts no trouble all. Oh, and it only gobbles  2-2.5 litres an hour at 7 knots while driving a 30amp and 120amp alternator.

    Love my little green monster.

  2. would a total of 70 metres be enough for barrier?  have not cruised there much but know it tends to be the deepest place around here

    My thoughts as well.

70m gives you a max anchoring depth of 14m and I thought you needed about 20m for the barrier

  3. After reading this thread I'm dam pleased to have a Raymarine Seatalk network running on my boat. Everything (wind, depth, speed, rudder, gyro, AP, compass, controller etc) plugs into the one bus on the course computer and instantly talks and interacts with everything else. The whole kit was a piece-of-cake to install and setup - Even I manged to get 90% of it running without reading the booklets titled Installation and Operating Manuel

I'm sure there are better systems out there, but for your average cruiser/racer it'd be hard to beat.

  4. 6 foiling 45s would be cool to see.

pity it costs $8 to view the racing.

    Screw you russell

    Is that correct?!?!

I just assumed it would be streaming free on Youtube and i was looking forward to watching it this weekend, but if Ruthel is clipping the ticket that wont be happening

  5. The exchange rate has changed, making this boat certainly not as good as it was. Months back it was about $143,000 NZD, asking, now closer to $180K NZD and you are right, likely too high for a NZ purchaser. I don't know where you get the $227,000 from? USD rate is now around 0.67 - was close to 0.90! so all the imports are currently considerably more expensive!!

The exchange rate is a moving feast at the moment, US$129k is now around $NZ$200k, add in GST @ 15% and tada, NZ$227k.

I went to reorder some product offshore last week and got a hell of a fright. If I sold it back to my supplier two weeks later I might make some $$  ;-)

  6. IT and 1paulg, you do realise that the price on that boat is USD?, isnt it? hence thats NZD$227,000 (incl GST) for a 23 year old Beneteau and that hardly seems like a good deal at all. Admittedly its had some upgrades, but upgrading that is a bit like polishing a turd isnt it

  7. Some insurance doubts?

Never! Such unscrupulous behaviour doesn't exist in the yachting fraternity.

Similar rumours surrounded a certain race yacht that 'accidentally' went under the Chelsea Sugar works wharf and lost its non-performance mast. Thankfully they were insured and got a new and improved rig as a result.

  8. Quick question for those in the know, does Open CPN work on an old 32bit laptop with XP?

Im thinking of loading this up tonight for the weekend cruise after Seaclear died with the old hard-drive and I'd rather not take the 'good' laptop on the boat.

    Cheers

  9. I think some need to be looking harder at themselves than they are at boating gear costs. I see more cost increases being owners 'wanting' more today than back a while when most were more than happy to have just what they 'need'. We see it everyday people wanting more than they really need, which is fine if they want to but they can't really bitch about increased costs if they are the soul reason for that increase.

I'm in the middle of making a new 30fter from a old one. The option I had was to give the existing the once over or import an equivalent (to be fair a superior faster sort of equivalent) from the EU for around 240K landed. But I had a desire to see what exactly it would cost to make a new 30fter from a old one, hence I'm not throwing lots at pro boat builders even though I could. I have spent a small amount on a pro just to ensure I did a couple of key areas very properly. So far I'm just not seeing the costs this thread would suggest there are. To be honest I have been surprised at how much cheaper the project has been to date, I was expecting to have paid more by now.

Prices have decreased, its the punters desires that have increased and with that the cost.

Designs haven't changed that much. Look around Akl Harbour most weekends and you'll see 25-30yo boats comfortably beating brand new ones.... and often brand new ones many feet larger.

+1, totally agree. I did a similar thing a few years ago with an old 42fter and I've got the receipts, results and fun credits that prove it. There's a lot of false assumptions about what things cost, and what effort is involved to achieve it and what individuals desire.

There's an saying in my industry (process outsourcing) that I live by and that applies to most commercial decisions we make in life,

Price, Quality, Time - pick two.

I.e. if you want a job done to the best price, you'll need to sacrifice either the quality or the time taken, if you want a job done of the highest quality you'll need to sacrifice the price or the timeframe and if you want the job done fast, quality or price is going to suffer.

In my case I picked price and quality as I was prepared to take my time.

  10. Tuffy, I'd be interested in your source? Can't find anything online about that - admittedly only a quick search.

FNG you beat me to the pics..

Only from a mate that did a rough Fastnet on one. Owner wasn't concerned because 'it was common' on that model.

Havent searched/confirmed it myself but I'll have a look.

The pics above seem to show rust on the aft bolt which maybe a symptom of it
