I read some where that a few years ago they approached a person from WA, who was the chairman of the advertising agency that created the anti-mining tax campaign. They asked him, with China’s booming interest re sailing, whether it would make sense for a big miner like BHP Billiton to sponsor an Australian challenge to the AC. They said it wouldn’t even be worth talking to them about an elitist sport funding campaign.

His opinion was if you want $48,000 to send some aboriginal kids to the MCG for a kick-around with their AFL heroes, they’ll write you the cheque on the spot. stating they don’t want to be associated with anything that’s elitist.

WHY : Because of the current economic climate, he just couldn’t see Australian shareholders supporting a multi-million dollar splash with what is seen as a play thing for rich men and their toys. He did not think Australian - NZ share holders would accommodate such a wasteful, non productive glory hunting venture.

ETNZ = attracted money from overseas countries – Emirates, Toyota, Sky Vodka, Nespresso, every name on the that boat was an overseas-owned company and not really or remotely a sole NZ representation.

PLUS

Do we want to have, the same?

Our sailing sport is quite possibly anything but elitist and may be one of the last big time sports still run by non elitists and fairer for all to compete.

Question five is amended to read.

Would an NZ Asia Oceania Challenge Cup Series with 4 long ocean races BI annually one annually around NZ for Cruisers and races Monohull / Multihull on the VPP handicap system be more appealing to NZ Companies and sailors, as the non millionaire sailors would be able to compete, with the first 20 places having substantial prize offerings incorporating prizes for all the crew members as well. YES.

trying to read the survey made my head hurt, but I think you have made a good point.

Sailing is definitely seen as elitist by the general public, when for the most part is anything but, compared to say motor racing for instance it's relatively cheap depending on the level at which you enter.

I think a lot of blame for this perception is due to the obscene amounts of money spent chasing the Americas cup, but by the same token you don't see people thinking motor racing is elitist because of the millions spent there.
