marinheiro 352
Replacement for Cospas - Sarsat system, sounds pretty impressive http://www.sailmagazine.com/gear/electronics-and-navigation/medium-altitude-earth-orbit-search-rescue-system-comes-stream/?utm_source=sail-enewsletter&utm_medium=email&utm_content=textlink&utm_campaign=enewsletter
erice 732
The system is being phased in gradually, but already it is saving lives. In July, a hiker in New Zealand who broke his leg and activated a PLB was located within four minutes—the same signal was not picked up by Cospas-Sarsat for another 50 minutes. with the smallest plb transmitters being abou the size of a matchbox, and most of that being battery and waterproof case, it can't be long before a phone maker will be able to squeeze one into a mobile phone or sat phone phones already have, gps chips, antennas and batteries if the meosar system picks up emergency signals so fast there wouldn't be the requirement for the large batteries to give 48hrs of battery life, which is the main difference between an epirb and a plb - 24hrs
erice 732
Distress calls made in the 30 million square kilometres south of the equator will now be found much faster following the completion of a new satellite receiving station near Taupo last week. http://www.stuff.co.nz/national/73583439/New-MEOSAR-satellite-station-near-Reporoa-to-speed-up-rescues
