vic008 17
On my other boat (volvo 3cyl) Light on means diodes shot? How to find where fault is? Could test out alt, you then run it and diodes go again. Could spend time on wiring then find fault is with the alt. Really nice to run the engine and say alt is charging, fault elsewhere. But if you have a fault, then the alternator will blow.
wheels 543
Assuming you are referring to the charging light and not the Oil warning light, then yes, the light means the ALT is not charging. If the drive belt is OK, then it is most likely the ALT itself. The best way to check is with a multimeter set to Volts. Find the large terminal on the back of the ALT. Place the positive lead of the meter onto that. The Reading should be 12.6V with engine not running. Start the engine and the Voltage should rise to 13.8V. If no change is noted, then there is no output from the ALT.
