Tuesday 4 January - Lagerfield Race Day 1

The day started off a lot more promising than yesterday with a 15 knot northerly which provided the fleet with great racing conditions.

There were three races held today once the fleet behaved after two general recalls testing the race committee and bringing out the "I" flag.

Dave Shaw from Nelson was the winner of the first two races handeling the conditions well to do a horizon job on the rest of the fleet, however a bad third race means that Mark Bell from Auckland is the overall leader after day one with Hayden Percy in second and John Thomson in third. The forecast for tomorrow is good again and the fleet are looking forward to other three races.

Wednesday 5 January - Barton Marine Race Day 2

Day two sure the fleet greeted by a heavy fog in Wellington harbour, however this was not deterring any of the competitors in the 2011 Paper Tiger Nationals.

Three races were completed in lighter conditions than yesterday (around 5-12kts), with three separate race winners showing how tight the racing is.

Race winners today were Glenn Syman (Evans Bay), Rowdy Leatham (New Plymouth) and Dave Shaw (Nelson).

With 6 races now completed the drop come into play and Bob Preston (Nelson) holds the provisional lead on count back over Mark Bell (Auckland).

Results however incredibily tight with 3 boats tied in 4th place on 28 points and only 18 points separating 4th from 13th.

The kangaroo court session is just about to begin so further updates will be posted tomorrow.

Thursday 6th January - Linton Sails Race Day 3

Day Three saw a typical Wellington breeze start to build with only one race managing to be sailed.

Race seven of the regatta was sailed in 20+ knots with a few gusts into the thirties

Dave Shaw from Nelson again showed his domination in the heavier breeze, taking the win ahead of Peter Robins in second and Scott Pedersen in third.

With the breeze continuing to build the Race Committee made the great decision to send the fleet e for the day.

Unfortunately the breeze built quicker than anticipated and there was a fair bit of carnage happening on the way home (including 5 broken masts).

Heading to the Rest day tomorrow, Mark Bell (Auckland) holds the overall lead two points ahead of Bob Preston (Nelson) who is another two points ahead of Dave Shaw.

With 4th to 12th place separated by only 20 points and two races planned for Saturday there is still plenty of tight racing to happen on the final day.

Shaw wins 2011 New Zealand Paper Tiger Nationals

The 2011 New Zealand Paper Tiger National Championships finished on Saturday with Dave Shaw from Nelson taking his first Paper Tiger National title in a very close fought contest between himself, Mark Bell (Auckland) and Bob Preston (Nelson).

After a week of competition and eight races the top three places were separated by only two points.

The final day saw a typical Wellington breeze entertain the fleet with weather conditions in the heavier end of the racing spectrum ensuring that plenty of excitement and changes within the fleet were seen.

Race eight saw local sailor Richard Martin take his first race win of the regatta ahead of Dave Shaw and Scott Pedersen (Napier).

Overall racing was tight across the fleet and the sight of nearly 50 Paper Tigers racing around Wellington Harbour was really impressive, however the Wellington weather certainly didn't fail to show exactly who was boss with one day of chaos on Thursday including 5 broken masts, the great camaraderie of the fleet showed itself with everyone working hard on the reserve day to ensure the entire fleet was ready to go again for the final day of racing.
