Guest
On the front page this morning is the following claim: As a FYI - The 2 oldest trophy's still competed for in NZ sport are both for yacht racing. The Lipton and Sanders cups. The Sanders Cup was 1st raced for in 1921, the Lipton Cup in 1922. I am knot sure that claim is correct... At the last two Royal Port Nicholson Yacht Club prize givings I have seen the Pet Cup awarded. It was first awarded in 1886, and is stored at the Museum of City and Sea. Evans Bay Yacht and Motor Boat Club also has a Pet Cup, first awarded in 1887, which is also awarded annually at their prize giving... see their programme at http://www.ebymbc.org.nz/racing_assets/ ... gramme.pdf listing the Pet Cup competition (near the bottom) See mention of the EBYMBC contesting the Pet Cup in 1945 in this newspaper account and some stuff about the origins of the cup and the yacht Pet it is named after here Interestingly The Canterbury Yachting Association also has a Pet Cup. Guest
Also, the Ranfurly Shield was first competed for in 1904 making it also older than the Sanders and Lipton Cups.
Guest
To be honest I've never checked that close but in years of saying it no one has said or even suggested otherwise. No idea about the Pet Cup, never heard of it. And we are talking sport knot some inter-Corporate thing so does the Ranfurly Shield count these days? Assuming that is one Wiki entry that is actually correct. Gonna have to suss deeper now. See if you can suss more also and we'll see where it goes. Could be very interesting to see what we can dig up, often sussing one thing can dig up some very interesting other stuff.
Guest
The Plunket Shield (for First Class Cricket) was first won in 1906/07 by Canterbury.
JK 28
If it were changed to "oldest sailing trophy" it would be accurate - and also delete the "for yacht racing" bit as it would be redundant.
Guest
Errr, but the Pet Cups (the RPNYC one and the EBYMBC one) are both sailing trophys. We are pretty sure the RPNYC Pet Cup is the oldest sporting trophy in New Zealand, and it is still being awarded.
JK 28
Sorry. didn't read the Wikipedia page correctly. The quote is: "It is the oldest trophy sailed for in New Zealand under its original inception". So, maybe the PET Cup(s) are not raced for as they were originally, or maybe the quote is wrong... Guest
That's quite an important qualification...
Murky 1
Stands to reason - as the years go by, it must inevitably become harder to muster a decent fleet of steam pinnaces, scows or longboats etc as some of the earliest trophies must have been originally raced in.
Guest
Another one that is older. Extract from the Annual Meeting Of The Wellington Football Association March 26th 1896. "It was announced that Messes W.& G. Turnbull & Co. representing Cameron Brothers of the New Venus & Queens Tobacco fame, had presented the Association with a trophy for senior competition. The trophy is still played for today, as the "Venus Shield."
ex Elly 197
Looks like the winner may be horse racing (listed as Racing). Can anybody beat 1866? http://www.teara.govt.nz/en/1966/sporting-trophies/
Guest
Looks like the winner may be horse racing (listed as Racing). Can anybody beat 1866? http://www.teara.govt.nz/en/1966/sporting-trophies/1 An excellent bit of research there... award winning. In answer to your question, I think Rifle shooting beats Horse Racing...
