khayyam 78
simple question: for those of you at swing moorings, do you lash the tiller when you're on the mooring?
Deep Purple 514
I didn't till a few weeks back. Then I found out the swinging against the stops had bent the rudder shaft. $1380 mistake. Now I tie them. Pic for reference

Guest
It's not just the threat of an 'rapid unwinding' - i.e when the boat is hit by a strong wind gust or, alternately,a strong water eddy which causes the helm to spin and the rudder crash against it's stops - the sort of damage Sundreamer mentions. It's also a matter of constant wear and tear on bearings. I have a shaft brake on Bintang's steering pedestal, which I don't trust much against the former occurence, so I lash the helm as well.
