Cooking on small boats.

With the Christmas cruise just around the corner it is time to think of your favourite meals on board especially those that one can do after all the fresh stuff has gone. It's time to put up your simple and tasty recipes made with dry/tinned rations?

I'll kick off with "How to make French bread on a boat"

Dried/tinned food, you lost me right there.

Well, once the fresh meat and veggies are gone, bad fishing, no crays, etc. Meals with pasta/rice, bottled sauces, chorizo/bacon, cheese, olives, etc.

5 min spaghetti sauce - Serves 2 generous portions

Ingredients

4 cloves garlic, minced
 2 Tbsp butter
 2 Tbsp olive oil
 1 (6oz) can tomato paste
1/3 cup red wine salt & pepper 1
(8oz) pkg spaghetti
 1 cup grated Parmesan cheese

Instructions:

On the side, boil water to cook the pasta
 (takes longer than 5 minutes)

Heat up Olive Oil to medium low setting
. Add the butter and melt with the oil, without browning it,
Add garlic and cook for one minute,
Blend tomato paste in with the oil, mixing well until smooth,
Add red wine, and blend in the sauce,
Add in the Parmesan cheese, stir until blended in the sauce.

One fish, Kahawai is fantastic for it being a firmer fleshed beast and often an easy one to score.

A packet of 'Trident Hot and Spicy' pot noodle things. Other brands, flavours could be used I suppose.

500mls there abouts and adjusted to suit of water.

Cook the noodles as directed. You can adjust the liquid quantity to make it drier or more soup like if you like. Make sure the noodles get enough to suck up though, I reckon that's around 250mls.

When the noodles are about 1/2 cooked (fast simmer rather than boiling), only 1 or 2 mins into it, drop in some of the chopped into chunks fish.

Continue to cook for another 1 or 2 minutes, it takes bugger all. Or just turn the cooker off and let it all sit for 5-10min to heat thru and the noodles to soften up.

Serve.

If you like a tad of a 'bing' to it just squeeze a little lime juice over the top.

If you like you can also chuck in a handful or Peas, sweetcorn and stuff like that.

You can adjust the amount of 'hotness' by using some or all of the chilli power sachet. Using it all can make it a bit hot for many I've found. Everyone seems OK with 1/2 to 2/3rds of the sachet.

Done. A real easy, fast, hard to bugger up and very tasty Thai Fish Curry.

Good for the day after you catch a big fish and have limited refrigeration. Do some raw or whatever the day you catch it and curry the remainder the next day. Actually knot shabby on cost either. $1.00 for the pot noodles (??) and a fish. A nice dollop of fish and 1 pack of noodles will do 2 people. Just been told a '5 pack' of those noodles cost around $3 and they'll last in a locker for an entire season if kept dry.

Knot massively high in calories, approx 400 a serve, at a guess and depending on what Fish is used, so good for the ladies who want to stay in tip top bikini shape or for the likes of Mr Ogre to keep his fine athletic conditioning ;)

You can also use chicken, rabbit or other things like that if you need to 'eat it today or else'. May pay to give those a quick sear in a pan before dropping in to make sure they cook thru.

Try this.

Can of Watties tomatoes with the flavouring such as say mexican.

Can of Black Beans.

Smooth peanut butter.

Cheese.

Onions and garlic.

Flat bread eg tortilla bread.

Fry a couple of onions and chopped garlic in olive oil till slightly brown.

Pour in the can of tomatoes and drained beans.

Add 2 large tablespoons of peanut butter.

Salt and pepper as you like.

Slightly brown a flatbread on a hot skillet. Place on a plate and put a couple of spoons of the above mix on and roll. Then sprinkle cheese on top and also some finely cut onion over the cheese and then grill a few minutes.

The peanut butter makes this taste really good.

Walk around the rocks and get 50 pacific oysters.

The best ones are where a tree has grown down into the water and the oysters are growing on the wood like the farms.

Shuk the oysters ( best done with a dive glove )

Then dry them on paper towel and drop in a bag of bread crumbs

Shallow fry in butter till just turning brown on outside but still raw in middle

Do this right and you will not bother about scallops any more
