2012 Harken Young 88 Nationals April 14-15 - 30 Boats?

The Young 88 Nationals always attracts a strong and competitive fleet. In recent years we have been getting numbers in the low to mid twenties.

Paddy Wagon, the first official Young 88 was launched in December 1981 which means we have just turned 30 and on top of that Jim Young was made an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit for Services to Boat building in the New Years honours list.

How many reasons do you need to celebrate?

The Owners Association are campaigning to get 30 boats on the start (in spite of all the gripes about recession and rain). We are putting out the challenge to other classes, women's crews and even the Aussie 88 fleet to take us on at our game, get a boat and get entered.

If they want to get 30 boats they need to make it attractive for the range of owners out there.

My suggestions include

Lots of spot prizes

Different divisions to cater for the casual racer cruiser owner

A 2 handed restricted division?

A 3 handed division to help the boats with less crew

I think doing nothing they will get 15 to 20 boats, but to get the record numbers they need to attract the cruising fleet

29 i think is the current record & mid 20's has been a baseline. Its the very high standard of class racing & race management that attracts the top skippers & crews year after year, not to mention the owners who keep the class in good shape & contribute to the owners association. Yep having supportive sponsors & delivering for them has made the prize package & hospitality possible again. If you like your chances, get a team together & convince an owner to join in - i hear the entry fee has been reduced this year too

It is really good racing but allot of boats won't do it because they don't want to put holes in them

Maybe have 2 divisions. 1 for hard out racing and the other will just be for just 1 day and have a harbour course or something. Will keep the racers and cruisers separate and limit the chance of damage for those who are concerned.

 Great feedback thanks... keep it coming.

We have our next owners association committee meeting in two weeks so can work on any ideas that are practical for this year and action them, and record feedback for future events.

The Nationals are policed by a canny set of international umpires which tends to keep things the right side of the rules and settles the more random behaviour.

Feedback from the class survey in the middle of last year also indicated that we need to keep working on the social and more cruisy side of the class.

Another good idea... rallying the troops now... and have proposed the idea of integrating a more cruisey race at least on the Sunday, not sure if we have the time and resources to add into the program but we will see.

Also have had two firm keen enquiries for boats to charter if anyone knows of any idle and competitive (enough) Y88s that could do with a tune up and some cash.

Here is the link to the survey we are using to gather names and contact details of charterers, charterees (??) and those looking for or looking to crew or any other Y88 assistance...
