No, You need something a bit more intelligent. A car charger generally has a reasonably consistent voltage supply due to the way it's wired, therefore no need for internal voltage regulation. On a yacht you can have potentially 12V at minimum voltage to close to 15v at full charge capacity, depending on the type of batteries. Multiply this by 1.5 then ask yourself if you want to bung this through your computer. There are numerous methods of attaching volt meters and manually regulating the voltage but we all know you are a techno neanderthal, electro cromagnon and would rather be sailing so I won't bore you.

Agree, you want something a little more intelligent than the Trademe cable. One of the issues you may experience with the wrong or cheap adapter is noise (think LED lights induced noise on your VHF). This may be important if you are using your Laptop for navigation as it could interfere with your GPS signal.

Take a look at these options

or locally

The latter is from the electronics shop Booboo mentioned out at Te Atatu so you could potentially take your laptop/GPS dongle with you and try it out.

Talk to Reuben, he sorted me out nicely and you can choose the correct adapters for multiple devices and he will pick and pack them with your order.
