47th Hartley 16 Nationals

Starts on the 16th with measuring I believe then 3 days of 3 races a day.

Happening at the New Plymouth YC so if in the area go have a suss as these, or at least some of these, aren't the old lemon tree crap covered shitters they once were, there has been some serious 'Gucci My Ride' action been happening with them, as a class. String sails, carbon stuff here and there, stripped strings and all the fancy stuff has been going on. Good to see stuff like this happen and the reports I'm getting from a couple newish to the class is they love it to bits, even though they came from skiffs and rafts. Good cheap but hard fun yacht racing on a budget knot much more than a couple of slabs, it is that easy.

Reports are saying it's all on down there with 4-5mt waves and lots of wind. It seems so much wind the boats are having the odd issue staying together. Some races have been postponed.

To date 2 races have been held and results show they are mixing it up well.

23 boats are racing.

R1 -

1, W Holdt/Pritt in Rumbo

2, J Holdt/Hodge in Simply Red

3, A Holdt/Fawcet in Tight Fit

R2 -

1, A Holdt/McArther in Stratos

2, Canute/Canute in Hartley Moving

3, A Holdt/Fawcet in Tight Fit

Some names jn there with Williams/Hickman in Shacking Laundry getting two 8th's so far. The 2 Feilds in Maxibaz getting a 11th and a DNF.

Day 2. Similar conditions again.

3, Pilkington/Hartley in Shoestring

R4

1, Pilkington/Hartle

Interesting to see no one boat has won more than one race nor has anyone scored more than one 2nd either. Only A. Holdt/Fawcet have managed to pull off two 3rds. Ya can't say they aren't mixing it up.

Points after 4 races with 3 (??) to go. No drops yet.

2, Pilkington/Hartley 15

3, S. Holdt/McArthur 17

Alan Holdt and Roger Fawcett win National Champs

The final day of racing at the Hartley 16 nationals in New Plymouth saw the fleet complete 3 races in light to moderate winds. Overnight leader “Tight Fit” Alan Holdt & Roger Fawcett(NPYC) held off a strong challenge from “Stratos” Simon Holdt & Nathan McArthur(NPYC) to win the 2013 nationals by two points, with defending champion “Pronto” Gareth & Mike Insley(Manukau) making a late run to claim 3rd also claiming the family trophy.

The class uses the “one design handicap system” for the handicap result with local crew Guy & David Ormrod in Splash taking 1st place.

The off water socialising as always, was well attended, with judge snowflake presiding over the very entertaining daily court session, with the proceeds going to the newly formed Sailability Taranaki. Thanks goes to Sponsors Black Heart, Carlsberg, Wild Buck, NZCT, Doyle Sails, IED Lifting Centre, TSB Bank, Taranaki Providers, and a big thanks to Joseph Wright, and race officer Jamie Sutherland.

The 48th Hartley 16 National Champs will be held in Manukau, and with the class doing a publicity drive over the next 12 months with the aim of increasing numbers it could be the biggest nats yet.

Overall Results – Line

1, A Holdt/Fawcet 17

2, S Holdt/Fawcet 19

3, Insley/Insley 28

4, Williams/Hickman 31

5, Pilkington/Hartley 32

Overall Results – Handicap

1, Insley/Insley

2, W Holdt/Pritt

3, Pilkington/Hartley

4, Write/Fisher

That name isn't on the entry list WT. I thought it may have been but they busted but Nope, one sign of her. A few boats did get busted on day one and I'm told knot all got fixed up in time to do days 2 and 3.

Hmm, Wouldn't surprise me if the crazy 'V' fall apart on the way to the start. The week before a nationals a few years back we found she was 75mm too short on WL. So we stuck a new transom on her with hot glue and micro balloons. We won that particular regatta with a race to spare, but jesus, Veloce was the fastest and roughest do up before a nationals I've ever seen! The owner painted over the windows and stuck new ones on with black sticky-back!
