    Diesel and kero seem to boil the kettle more quickly, I assume they have a higher calorific value ? My wife says the odour is disgusting if you are seasick which is why I have stuck to alcohol, gotta keep GM  Domestic Operations happy.

    There are a bunch of other sites if you trawl the web , parts are still made at a cottage industry  level in various parts of the world such as India South korea, the US and UK ,europe etc. To the best that I can figure the burner assy is the same for Meths or Kero, it is only the jetting that varies, I have a bunch of spares and the meths orifice is a few thou smaller .

    hi CD, blimey you seem to be very knowledgeable on this Lithium battery gig, if you don't mind offering an opinion I'm doing a campervan fitout and intending to use Lithium , I'm using Half Moon Bay Electrical for supplying the entire  system and I'm sure they know what they are doing but I would appreciate a second opinion . Below is the component list and we are awaiting a 330AH victron battery which is still on a ship somewhere. With the 12/3000 inverter we intend to power an induction cooker , 800w kettle and 800w microwave but never all at once . There will be 2 x 220 W solar panels wired in series on the roof. 

    Nothing about this system is cheap !! the battery alone is north of 5K 

    Since I'm sinning by talking campervans on Crew.org I'll PM you for contact and I'm happy to pay for a consult.

A Bicycle mechanic once said to me a bike is a frame and a collection of parts, the quality and condition of the parts defines the bike and the riding experience.  Its an oversimplification of course but it also applies to boats. ie if the mast, rigging, sails, electrics  and engine are worn out then all you have is a floating liability that will endlessly frustrate you and your partner, probably wont do much for the relationship either. Other commentators here are right, borrow the money if you have to and get a vessel that suits your needs,if you can't afford the loan then you might have to reconsider if you can afford the venture ? A rough rule of thumb that I have heard of is that opex for a boat is about 10% of capex , e.g a 30K boat will cost about 3K per season to maintain. I have a Carpenter 29 (not for sale) I worked it out once and it seemed about right , its on a swing mooring but that figure would go up if you are thinking of a marina. If you are not particularly handy or dont have the time  I would recommend a vessel with a GRP hull and decks. My recent experience is that you won't get insurance without a survey that is less than 2 yrs old and you will likely pay 1200 to 2K for a that not including haul out fees for the hull inspection. This will usually  exclude the rigging and certainly the engine for which you will need a other experts. In my policy they wont cover a demasting if the rigging is more than 10 years old, an engine survey is a must IMHO.

    After having several yachts of varying sizes, sub 20k we are slowly saving for the over 40k market to eliminate those replacement issues.

    That's a very good point , easy to buy a cheap boat only to find it converts to a steep premium, sometimes with nasty exclusions.

    The boat was punching into a steep sea and falling off the back of the waves, as Phil described it "like falling on to concrete"

    I crewed on one trip where we had 40 knots SW about 200 nm off the coast of NZ, the boat was slamming so we reduced sail and slowed down , it was a large steel vessel, seemed to work.

    be interested to hear from other members as to what they have done in similar circumstances eg

    As above , slow the boat down

    Lie a hull

    Ease sail and reach off  etc

  11. I just tried to purchase my usual Hempel's  AF  however MT Smart Marine no longer stock it and the Manukau branch advised it was no longer available. I'm using Altex No 5 as a fall back for now but I would like to thin it for a better finish and roll out. This is against the manufacturer's recommendations but id be interested on feedback as a boat builder told me he thinned it with kerosene with good results and no performance degradation.

    30 hp seems hopelessly underpowered for a 53 ft yacht that must weigh 15 tons or more, I'll concede they have the track record to prove it was adequate, still 100hp sounds better :-)

    Erm, judging by the scantlings in the cabin photo she might be a tad more than 15 tons

  14. I have seen a smaller tri being repainted locally, it took forever and absorbed a ridiculous amount  of man hours and that was with all fittings off and the owner doing the prep. In observing and chatting to the painter I was humbled by his depth of experience and knowledge, he was highly skilled. In stating so emphatically that you don't want to do the prep (and neither would I :-) ) you seem to be  acknowledging the scale of the job in terms of time, planning, materials and skill . So bundling all that up 45K seems remarkable value for money, just be careful you don't go too cheap its an investment for the next decade. 

  15. The AC is evolving as always, its a professional sport now for better or for worse but personally it was great to see the recent defence  unfold before my eyes while sitting on the clifftop at Howick beach  and sipping a beer It still seems surreal.

    I'm of two minds about holding the next defence offshore but Dalton is smart and if they play this right I think we could see

    1. More boats.

    2. A greater global profile for ETNZ, who they are and what they represent, particularly as it applies to home grown technology.

    3. Positive spin offs for local business, think Southern Spars etc.

    4. A better chance for ETNZ to successfully defend, ($)

    5. ETNZ in a more sustainable and enduring financial situation, akin to  F1 team.

    6. A stunning spectacle on the global stage, fantastic viewing !

    7. Fleet lead up events in different locations, including hopefully Auckland.

    Perhaps it is time for the cup to flee its messy past and mature as a global event.

    The TP52's  are fantastic  boats but for me they would seem a backward step compared to the AC 75, I dont think its realistic to put the cat (foils) back in the bag now the punters have had a taste.
