Compass Yachts were not exactly a premium builder, but most of their creations are still afloat all over 40yrs old
I think production shifted to Oz eventually.

Great feedback thanks guys! I was unaware of the Cat One issue so I will have to look into that.
Thanks for the background on The Wildthing Island Time.... any idea where the builder, Scott Norton , is now days??
Used to race against a 38 "Lionheart" in the sounds years ago and she went pretty well back then. Did a few Sth Island offshore races on Cutty Hunk a Farr 44 (looked like a bigger version of the 38) back in the 90's and she was a great boat offshore.
Really after a coastal cruising boat thats got some speed and is fun to sail and can be sailed 2 up. Guess if you keep that big main flat and reef early she should be OK handling wise.
A yacht called Lionheart foundered off Whangaroa in 83 , I think it was a Farr 38 returning from offshore, it was a terrible tragedy. I recall the slightly uncommon name of the skipper was the same as a bloke I went to school with, I always wondered if it was the same person, he survived as I recall, nice bloke.

My feeling, subject to being corrected, is there is less need the smaller the boat. I wouldn't bother on my 30 footer. They've been great on a bigger boat though.
Tend to agree

When hunting for an offshore cruising boat we were advised to put speed and comfort in the proper perspective since we would spend way more time at anchor than passage making.
In the market place we were constrained by budget so newer models were out of reach and we wanted to avoid "Project Boats". The trick then was to find a tried and true design with no deferred maintenance and up to date equipment, we found something in the end, not perfect but it has worked out.
Good Luck !

Thanks guys/girls, problem with searching TM is they don't give head room and don't have the collective knowledge of a forum full of sailing experience.
I Like the Farr 1220 but head room?
Catalina have good HR but?
Anybody here own any of the French/ Euro builds?
...I want a tough/reliable, easily driven, comfortable, low Maintenance 40'r. Gotta be f/glass.
Less than 20yo would be nice.
Just hit me with your ideas. There are no bad ideas. ..I am Keen to nut this out.
Ross 40?
Are Benny's better than Jenny's, better than Bavarias, than Hanse's....
How do we know?
You want a "low maintenance boat" Let me know when you find one of those

When we lived aboard in Australia we caught rain water. Never ran out or had to get water from shore. Around:200 litre storage and a lot simpler than a water maker.
Looking at Metvuw , you might be in luck by Good Friday

Good luck on that , you only have to mention the word Reserve and you will hear the screams of entitled anguish from one end of the gulf to the other.
I don't understand why there aren't 20, 30, 40, or 50 Goat Island type reserves in the Gulf. They would just take up a small fraction of the Gulf area and would surely make at least a small difference.
I was up at Kawau for the weekend and saw several instances of people fishing, catching only small ones and throwing them back in. Do those small ones actually survive?

I thought this was interesting - paperwork costs more than the actual freight!!
Still WAY too much. No wonder production costs are high!
Is that the Aussies suffering from their Sclerotic Bureaucracy or the Aussies suffering from a Global Bureaucracy ?

And National if your post is correct is only going to devote $5m a per year, nation wide to clean only not prevent plastic and micro plastic contamination. What will $5m do? Would not purify Auckland harbour, Waitemata harbour Hauraki Gulf waters.
Meanwhile a new challenge for the Whitford Estuaries Conservation Society, which will likely be fought in the courts.
So plenty of challenges to protect and improve the Gulf waters.
Challenging the Auckland City Council’s recent consent variation allowing treated wastewater to be discharged directly into the Turanga River from a new subdivision adjacent to the Whitford Park Golf Club. This council decision goes against the mood of the nation in general and the Auckland Council in particular (as it’s commitment to clean up and improve our waterways). A challenge to the Auckland Council on this decision has been initiated.

Similar to what Alibaba mentioned , we had 2 deck hatches reglazed by a company in Penrose they used Dowsil 795 Structural Glazing Adhesive /Sealant. I heard somewhere that Its also used to attach windows to skyscrapers.
The best thing about it is that seems totally UV resistant, unlike the polyurethane based compounds, which I have found wanting.

If we sell a car or boat that we know is well beyond economical repair then are we part of the problem in that we are just kicking the can down the road ? Obviously not the case if the insurance company writes it off I suppose.

The Buyers were probably eternal optimists as well !
I don’t think the guy is out to deceive, rather is just an eternal optimist. Everything is either quite ok, cool, or wonderful. Definitely glass half full sort.
I wouldn’t mind some of his med.
Then I did not dig deep.
But, he was open about the inadequate repairs to Metro.
If any prospect buyer thought his methodology was anything other than temporary, they deserve the outcome. -
Not ideal but you could knurl the shaft then machine knurling to fit coupling. Another way would be to sleeve the coupling . I have seen this arrangement with grub screws before but it's better to thru bolt the shaft and coupling because in astern the only thing preventing the shaft from pulling out are the two grub screws Shaft exiting is a major event.
That is a very good point !!
-
I have a mate with a prop shaft coupling that is not sitting on a taper, just parallel shaft. It is on a key and locked with two grubscrews, not very good I suppose.
Anyway it is a bit loose so can anyone suggest some sort of Loctite or epoxy or something that he might use to remove the freeplay ? .
And by the way I have a saildrive

Pretty Much just start methodically checking and eliminating all components.
Fresh Water Pump impellor
Thermostat (it will have one)
Heat exchanger core and end caps
Exhaust elbow
Any Rubber hoses carrying coolant.
Should not be the raw water pump as far as I can figure
For our overheating problems it turned out to be a clogged exhaust elbow, last thing we checked after weeks of work, sods law.

Cheers all,
Yes the point about having to have it on all the time is a concern, I will have to look at that, maybe a bypass set up is needed. Its just that the Perkins seems to take forever to purge when using the lift pump and its in an damn awkward position .
The bulb might do the trick if its displacement is substantially greater than the lift pump, certainly it will be a damn sight easier.

We are looking to install a 12v fuel pump between the primary and secondary filters on our Perkins Prima Diesel (50HP) can anyone recommend a reputable product ?
Incidentally we don't need the boost its more for bleeding etc.

I'm sure you can get a feed in Fitzroy, always found it hard work myself but why bother when just outside the entrance are the mussel farms. OMG 2 weeks back 1 hr aft sunrise on pilchards, flasher rig Bang, Bang, Bang, all big fish. We stopped at 3 each took maybe 20 minutes.

I stole some of my sons Tamiya modelling tape to paint the waterline on a half model, brilliant stuff worked like a charm https://hobbystation.co.nz/tamiya-masking-tape-refill-6mm/ . There are versions for curved surfaces .
Try also posting your question on a scale modellers forum like https://www.scale-models.co.uk/
I think paint application with an airbrush is best, good luck

I was going to suggest tables after the bed heads had run out after that get into the mid century Danske Mobler chairs.
Wasn't it Nathanael Hereshoff who cynically said that Mahogany was anything red called Mahogany ?
They are still harvesting Central American Mahogany it needs to seasoning though https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aReJkSwqd6Q

My mate has installed two of these purchased from Aliexpress one in his camper van and another in his boat, I checked out the camper van unit yesterday, and it was pumping out an impressive amount of heat. It was also very quiet running inside the van. I should say he has exceptional skills, and has the time to do the installation himself, his work is immaculate.
He thinks they are fine
