She is doing a very good impression of abandoned, coming up to two months.... surprising the harbour master hasnt authorized the chainsaw boys to get into it and sent the clean up bill to the owners, previous harbourmasters would have.

He doesnt want to spend taxpayers money on something that he will never recover from the owners when they are telling him they have a plan!

  3. "Our ship may look abandoned on the rocks of Matiatia but it's not. We are forging a plan with the authorities to salvage it in pieces to repurpose into a playground. It is quite a process and these things take time. We go out there regularly to check on it and make sure it's all stable and wreckage is contained. Last time we went out there we noticed someone had cut out 4 more bronze portholes which were supposed to be a part of the ship themed playground.
Please don't assume its an abandoned wreck and if you took or know who took the portholes thinking that it was, could you please let us know and or return them."

Today on local FB- Not that I condone anyone taking things from it but the reality is it has been there since mid December getting things hacked off it ( some by owners and obviously a few things going missing) -  when it potentially it could have been salvaged originally if that was the original intention ( Ok that would have taken money and it was uninsured) but I fear this story is going to go on for some time..... Shame to see it go this way.....

The cost of cleaning up, getting to the school, appropriate permits, foundations, and making it safe for children to climb over would be over $100k. That's not even lightweight journalism, that's just pathetic

It worries me that an Eco style school can get involved in a project with a couple that are clearly out of their depth with handling something like this - the logistics of moving that boat are significant - will do some local research and try to get some more detail

Wonder what the reason for insurance declining payout was. I guess anchoring unattended in matiatia in a blow maybe.

My understanding is that they werent insured in the first place..

That Stuff article presents the case in a rather favourable light - the facts are they could have picked a better place to anchor a 70 ' boat- not a lot of room for a boat of that size amongst the moorings (someone else anchored it) , went ashore when they knew a front was coming through , and seem to have a vague plan to leave it there as a monument turning down help to try and remove it

Sorry, after review of the latest law/maps, I am wrong.

    The law states:

The  owner  or  person  in charge of  a  vessel  must  obtain prior approval of the Harbourmaster  to anchor  the vessel  overnight  in the  same  bay  or  within  one nautical mile  of  the  previous  overnight  anchorage  for  longer  than  14 days  in a 28 day  period

It applies to the entire Auckland region.

Wonder how Archangel gets away with it at St Heliers ?

  7. There is a bit more to the story .... that article skims over the details.   They knew a front was coming and bought it into Matiatia to anchor - a 70 " ketch amongst the moorings - anchored it (or had it anchored by someone according to the article) then went ashore and slept with friends that night leaving the boat unattended. First they knew it had dragged was the next morning when someone posted a picture on the Community FB page and they saw it. To my way of thinking not a great place to anchor a boat that size when there is limited space plus leave it unattended knowing there was a front coming.

Meantime the locals on Waiheke have helped them strip the boat of most things of any value but they dont seem to have a plan to deal with the wreck despite being offered help which they didnt accept. The whole thing is starting to drag on and it will become an environmental issue if it isnt dealt with soon. Unfortunately it was uninsured so they probably dont have the resources to salvage it I am guessing

The fact we cant stay overnight at Waiheke would be starting point

Thats got nothing to do with elimination - just the Govt trying to minimize collateral damage in a community that had no covid cases - however their decision to send someone who had covid there to isolate sort of contradicts that which makes you wonder  what they are actually trying to do

I wrestled with this and finally went for thin flexible panels on top of the canvas Bimini. The cost of the extra framing negated the extra cost of the panels.

The economics change when you consider that the flexible panels arent nearly as efficient and will most likely need to be replaced within 5 years

I was watching 2 surf-skiers through my telescope on Sunday. One fell out, the other had to stand by while he got sorted. As a bit blowey and a cross chop, they were a fair way out from Stanmore Bay, heading to Manly I think. Anyway, I made a point of watching until they were sorted again. Didn't think it the best weather to be surf-skiing in (then, I'm not a surf ski-er, so I wouldn't know).

Surf Ski paddlers love fresh downwind conditions as thats what surf skis are designed for - there are a lot of experienced paddlers around who are very comfortable in choppy conditions -getting back on board if you fall out isnt too big a deal and normally the paddler would have a leash and a ph or vhf

Don’t condone it either , but can you imagine the uproar if the “rich” were allowed to socialise and have gatherings in exotic locales on their boats  while the “poor” have to meet in small groups at overcrowded parks .

not trying to be political at all just looking at it from all angles while trying to overcome my first world depression at not being able to race in the coastal classic this year

Or while Gang members distribute drugs out of their border and are infectious at the same time....

    Au contraire Armchair.

TNZ chose to turn down the Council/Government $100m offer with a like and kind content Mark Dunfay kinda put another $80m on the table now with all the potential hosts running for the hills apart from the Evil Empire Dalton looks increasingly more of a greedy fool than a tall poppy.

Personally I would much rather see the loot and resources poured into combating the appalling world leading youth suicide rate that we have here in what used to be the home of the Cup.

Dunphy's offer was never really a concrete offer for TNZ to count on -hopefully it may still materialise and bring the bacon home but that may be wishful thinking - we will know v soon !

I'm with Mariner, they had the least requirements to get insurance, and were the cheapest. We didn't need a survey or anything. 35 yr old wooden log.

Why did you need a survey?

Some outfits I tried getting quotes from had ridiculous requirements. Pantaneous wanted survey reports on our mooring piles every 2 years. I'm like, is just a massive timber post, new, H5 treated, about 2 feet thick. What else do you want to know about them? That was including rig survey, out of water survey, covid tests, marriage certificate, copy of my school certificate grades etc

I found Pantaneous the worst when I looked around

Yeah that's comforting. I'm pretty sure they are covered so hopefully mine are more than 80% as well. I guess the only way to check is take them off and put a load cell on them and if happy then put back on?

Ideally you need to find the exact age of the rigging - taking them off for a load test and potentially refitting or then finding out they have degraded then needing to get new ones made just adds to the cost and time involved for the exercise

Any advice on my side stays. They are 20mm dyneema. Not sure if they are 2010 or 2016. Apart from inspecting for chafing or uv damage by looking for snapped fibers what else can I do apart from just replacing them as a preventative measure?

Have they got covers on ? That will help protect from UV and abrasion.  I replaced my 16 mm ones after 10 years (had covers on them) and had one tested which came out surprisingly well ( from memory they got to 80% before stopping ie they didnt test to break point). As mine were over size ( I could have come down in size) I was still well and truly covered although I was happy to replace after that length of time (with 16 mm)
