The change in window rules is a major change for offshore sailing multihulls.

For keel boats the rule changed from "you need to carry shutters" to "you need to have them fitted". For Multis the rule changed from " you need shutters or strong windows" to "shutters must be fitted."

    Old Regs:

Nearly all offshore sailing NZ multis have extremely strong windows and a plan to deal with breaking one of them i.e ply the right size ready to be screwed in.

These new regs are pretty unworkable for most of the multis I've spoken too. It will weaken the window frames/cabin top, potentially allow rot to start in ply boats (lots of NZ built boats), add pressure to the windows where they weren't designed for it (think curved windows) and reduce visibility from inside the saloon. One of the things I love about my boat is we can sit on the couch and have 300 degrees of visibility, meaning watches can be mainly done from inside and greatly reducing crew fatigue and safety. Even if we use clear covers, it will reduce the visibility as our windows are already 22mm thick.

Yes, most Multis have very large windows but we also have a greatly reduced risk of sinking, so the risk profile isn't the same as a mono.

YNZ and MNZ snuck in this change with no consultation due the consultative rule change process. I wrote a submission from the NZ Multihull Yacht Club requesting some rule updates, which they accepted, however didn't talk to us at all about this major shift for Multihulls and have been ignoring our correspondence about it since we became aware of it in March.

I'm pissed enough to be looking at offshore registration as I'm now disenfranchised from how the Cat 1 rules and regulations are formulated and implemented. I was a great defender of the system before.

Agree totally - unworkable for Multihulls -  screwing shutters/covers over the windows -in our case quite a few - not only would restrict visibility but jeopardise the integrity of the foam in the cabin top where they need to be screwed in -particularly as they would be temporary fixtures.

  2. Tensions are certainly getting out of control - the protestors are going all out and are stepping beyond normal boundaries . The comments on local FB boards are very one eyed that its not worth anyone trying to reason with them.

At the moment there is a poster being distributed encouraging people to take tomorrow (Fri 09/07) off work and to go and join them at Putiki Bay !

  3. As Fogg said - the other options around Putiki Bay are quite tidal ....

The pontoon/pier at Kennedy Pt is another option -buses going to Ostend or Oneroa from there - you could leave the tender on the breakwater side of the pier where it would be out of the way for anyone launching from the ramp

  4. Is unfortunate that the Italian Press have come out critical of the "lack of respect " shown towards them - I dont feel it is a one horse race at all. Team NZ supporters are hoping their boat can do the job but LR having been so race hardened since Dec I feel until they get together on the racetrack tomorrow (and following days) it is far too early to  make a call and it should be a great contest.....

  5. I have Nanni;'s (Kubota) 37.5 hp in Pzazz -good little motors and extremely easy to service (built in pump to remove oil from sump) coupled with SD50's -yes the cone clutch is problematic but i have put in an upgrade kit (from overseas and Yanmar agents dont want to know about or be involved with) plus use a GL5 rated oil which is less slippery than the Mercruiser and theoretically helps extend life of the cone clutch -

I hear your concerns but frankly sometimes it feels like "If not them then who ?  MPI are hopeless. You want to see the fish life in Deep Water Cove due to the 2 year Rahui.

There has always been good fish life in Deep Water Cove

If you mean Nanni 3.75HE then:

    Oil Wix 51358

    Fuel Wix 33149

BE CAREFUL I checked the specs for some other cross referenced filters for the Nanni and they were wrong, including having the wrong thread. I am using the ones I listed, much cheaper than Nanni.

Yes the HE ... thanks for that will look into it

You have too not need fumigation, not be bio-fouled and have provisions for the remainder of the 12 day period.

Provisions includes being fully self contained, including power/gas, fresh water and appropriate black water treatment/storage space.

    Otherwise it's off to quarantine...

Usually its any provisions are confiscated and disposed of on entry so assume they are changing the rules in that department.

Minards diesel just North of Sydney -run by a girl with more Yanmar knowledge than the current local lot. Very unusual for an SD50 to have gear issues usually it is just the cones which can be lapped fairly easily.

That was the place I dealt with - great service and was pleasantly surprised at the range of parts they had.

Not what I’d have expected from the RNLI.

Btw it’s Isles of “Scilly” (SW England) not “Sicily” (Italy).

Assume they were towing to mainland in which case a long tow in those conditions. Don’t think there are any sheltered ports in Isles of Scilly - quite exposed there .

But to my point... is there no pressure to find a roadmap that could let some tourists in for the event, in the hope of recouping at least some of the millions spent on it?

Its looking as though the only possibility there is some Aussies but  everyone else is most likely to be watching on international media. Probably the best outcome is that Team NZ retain the cup and rehost again in a relatively short period ie 2 years -hopefully by then the shambolic state of affairs that is currently downtown Auckland  may not be so embarrassing!

Yep.  The two I have been too are just pumping salt water and dealing with the corrosion issues.  One I spoke to said there are salt water capable blasters they just come at an high price point, so for them it's a numbers game as to when the corrosion maintenance costs outweigh the salt water blaster costs coupled with when water restrictions will ease.

Just as well I am going to Whangarei for my next haul out which is shortly by the sounds of it !

I strongly advise you to check your insurance policy before going on to a mooring. My nephew has just purchased a 26ft and as long as it goes on to piles or marina he will be covered. He has been told insurance voided if he gets mooring.Marine insurance?? from memory.

It must vary between Insurance companies - I have my boat on a mooring now and it was no different in premium or policy over being in the Marina which I verified before putting it on one
