  1. Wouldn't agree to having a boat builder do the survey unless they are a registered surveyor as well otherwise the insurance company won't accept their report. Have to have all the appropriate checklists from registered surveyor. Can be just for insurance purposes or a full survey which costs more $.

  2. Johnson was a plumber. May have dabbled in yacht design. Beau was his brother. When I meet Johnson, he was sailing a Beau designed yacht but that was back in 1990. We were both working up in Western Samoa building the new Aussie diplomatic residences.

Both of us were pissed off not being out on the Hauraki Gulf for Anniversary weekend.

  3. I was talking to a couple of guys a few months back who were diving in Whitianga marina to see if the any of the weed had been transported into Whitianga. I mentioned that it would have arrived at the Mercs from the Barrier by means of wind and currents.

They agreed with me but said they are still going to try and stop the spread. Good luck with that.

  4. I have since sold the boat so am working on memory. I take it that you have a shaft drive. I told the Volvo agent that did the install that I would not accept the amount of vibration so they changed the mounts from the factory soft mounts to the mounts used on the 50hp.

I suspect the mounts used were for a sail drive application but were not appropriate for a shaft drive.

  5. The only problem I had with my Cav 32 cockpit drains is if you cleaned the cockpit of fish scraps after cleaning up after fishing, the scraps would slowly rot down in the tubes. Used to flush out and use an old heaving line poked down the drains to dislodge the smelly items and dispatch them to where they all came from.

I had Cautelle with a small rig that has done all but the Tasman to complete a circumnavigation. Last heard of in Port Douglas. RIP Gary - he had a Harmonic originally and then went to the dark side after Simply  the Best.

After Simply The Best he said there was only one way to go and that was the dark side to get better performance. Did a 2 handed around the Gulf with him once. Trouble was he sailed the race the night before the start, had it all planed. Conditions on start line were a lot different to what he had bargained for. Always had a good laugh when Gary was around.

  7. Had a 25hp Izuzu in ours with 2 blade folder. Was a good setup but the V-drive was not so good. Could still do 6kn upwind in a good breeze.

Sorry if my last post offended you AV10. All to their own I guess. Lighten up fella.

Most of them were the shorter rig to fit the half ton rating. Definitely underpowered in the light but it did make them very good upwind in a breeze.

Our boat - Confederate also did a circumnavigation with a later owner.

That Cav was once owned by Ken Feder who later owned a Farr 38 which he named Club Fed. He sold the Farr to Gary Best who sold it and bought the Elliot 13 Simply the Best. How's that for a lot of useless information.

  9. I lent Glenn the book perfect storm about that infamous Sydney to Hobart race. When he returned it I asked if he let Judy read it. He said christ no, if I did that we would never go.

Another story about that boat. When thinking of going offshore they decided to maybe sell the Choco 30 and get something a bit bigger, namely a Chico 35. Candidus was advertised and a very keen buyer had been in contact with them. Glenn had arranged for an open boat day at the PYBC wharf but he ended up having to work that day so left Judy to do the sales pitch.

Prospective buyer arrives but meanwhile Judy had decided she had complete faith in Candidus and didn't fancy a bigger boat so spent the day bagging the boat a duly lost the sale. A decision I don't think either of them regretted.

  10. Wheel steering is a waste of time as the cockpit is too small. We had the small rig on ours but a bigger main with the roach clipping the backstay. Also had a full hoist battened No 2 made by Steve Trevursa. Full hoist made a big difference.

Yeah - good luck with that on my Lotus 9.2, she's a bit broad in the beam for 15 degrees. In fact haul her in too tight and she stalls. I have tested as much as I can on a steady wind day, using a waypoint and the chartplotter VMG.

What I have discovered, for my boat, is that you need a polar diagram to give your best point of sailing. The maths bears this out. Hard on, if say your speed is 4knots and your VMG is say 3.2 knots... if you bear away by 10 degrees and your speed rises by more than 10%, you are winning.

For the my Lotus, my best VMG in smooth water is at 35 to 40 degrees to the wind, and in rough water add another 5 degrees. Boats designed for pure racing, will get better angles of course, and I remember my last trip on of the old Americas cup boats, and the bloody thing was operating close hauled at 16 degrees to the apparent wind!

On our 9.2 that equates to about 100mm off the spreader when hard on. A bit more in the light.
