We were told to over spec the generator so it was never running at full output? It was described as a range extender and battery charger. I could see it only being used a few times a year. However, if we had gone down that path we'd also have removed the Lpg and gone full electric cooking and water heating so it would of been a bit more than just a range extender on long cruises.

20kw genny was matched to a 15kw motor.

Lwl is 10m. Weight is 5200kg. We cruise at 6.2knots which is 2200rpm.  If we take the engine to ~2800rpm we hit Hull speed at ~7.1knots.  At that point we have 300rpm in reserve, the engine maxes out at 3100rpm iirc but we don't go there.

Sounds about right. I run our D1-30 at about 2200 rpm and sit at about the same speed, maybe a tad more. Need those extra horses to get in and out of Whitianga harbour against big tides.

The Katabatic thing is really a Stony Bay issue.  Very steep behind the bay.

If it happens, head out to sea, quickly.

Yes Peachgrove Bay and surrounds has been voted best place in the world, by us.

That area has regular visits from large dolphin schools and pods of Orca.

Where do you keep your boat chariot?

I moved away from the ablatives because I would wipe all the product off cleaning for racing.

BP, the Altex agent told me with the abliatives, it washing off when using the boat, i.e. first half hour it would wash off. I would imagine any wave action increases the shear stress enough to wash things off. The main concern I have is the high growth in the river. I don't think its had to reach a tipping point where growth becomes too thick, and wont wash off under use.

I find a good bash to windward gets rid of most slime except for the rudder which is easy to clean. Our boat is kept in Whitianga marina.

My cav i put in a little Volvo with sail drive. Meant the engine went back under the cockpit and opened a lot of space in the cabin.

I believe that would be the best option. Probably what I would have done if I had kept the Cav.

  5. I had a remotely located ZF box on our Cav 32. Took it to the agents and what a bloody disaster. Went in as a V drive and I got it back as a straight drive. That's what you get when the experts have a play with it. I would look at options away from V drive units.

We'll be watching on our phones during Wednesday pre-start in Mercury Bay

Why on a phone? Hope you are not still waiting up the top of Centennial Drive for the Tsunami.

  7. Watched one poor Jav loose his rig before he even got in the boat. Got caught in the shore break, couldn't hold boat straight, capsized and rig went into sand. Next wave was too much for the rig. Carbon fibre mast snapped, sounded like a gunshot.

Felt so sorry for them as it was only Saturday, so regatta over very early for them.

  8. I have a Gori 3 blade for sale if you are interested. 16.5 X 15 L/H 1" shaft. Was on a 28 hp Volvo pushing a Lotus 9.2. Found it very good with high thrust.

  9. I would seriously consider a Raven 26. Well balanced and ideal first keeler to teach the family how to sail and has as much interior volume as many older 30 footers.

We had one for 13 years. Several trips up north with 2 kids on board. You adapt to the space you have. We would all love bigger boats but reality sets in and financial restraints rear thier ugly head.
