I see COVID has pushed the date of the RNZYS's 150th Gala dinner out to the same day as the Triple Series 100miler.

    Not surprised

‘They don’t seem to consider anyone else when they set dates

  4. Same in lots of industries here, Supermarkets being another

IMHO it’s because of a history of a few large companies dominating the market and when a small guy starts they first try to strong arm them out and if that doesn’t work buy them out so they can maintain their large margins, they say it’s our small market but this is bollocks, lots of small countries around the world are cheaper in lots of ways than here. Mostly isolation that allows this but then again French Supermarkets in Tahiti are cheaper than here and that’s for food from NZ

  5. Unless you have a barberhauler setup or like the new pogos low friction ring  double line systems you will be set to the angles setup by the design and as stated above slower and wider boats will have a wider angle.

Then you need to maintain the gap between headsail and main. Overlapperes are harder to sheet closer than blade type sails

Biggest gains I’ve seen is outboard sheeting headsails once you crack sheets at all, this stops the leach from hooking

  6. Blue line all the way, can’t sheet a sail as per green line

The angle as per forstay comes down to sail cut and how you are using that sail in relation to wind strength and sailing angle

IIRC there’s 10 hole positions from light to heavy for a #1 on a 1020, maybe more

  7. I’ve been told that all of Auckland’s volcanoes are monolithic (only erupt once then move on ,nothing to see here)

So going north may not help, the average time line between Auckland eruptions is 600 years and the last Rangi was 900 years ago.

So if we could have the next one  on a cross of Tiri - Channel and Little Barrier - Durville would make an ideal racing mark and ideally with a harbour on the east and west would be great too.

  8. Yes member

Very disappointed but didn’t expect anything else

I and many others put a huge amount of time into training and marking out the race area with my own boat on practice days and race days to help a little to make it happen here.

And Dalton has sold it all to the highest bidder, I feel a bit robbed.

Then we wonder why people don’t volunteer now a days

  9. Yes a bit ironic as the two small areas are 80+ metres deep and are the seed beds for the entire area and only accessible to commercial.

These two beds were unknown until a few years ago and commercial interests got the powers that be to open up the commercial take from 33 shucked tonnes to 330 shucked tonnes because of these areas, this season the commercial take has only been 17 shucked tonnes

So now they close all areas that recreational fishers can access.

easy to see who pays the piper.

  10. You generally find two types of boat owners.

‘The first and where you should aim for is the type that use their boats all the time whilst fixing small stuff, and the type that never or very rarely use their boats as they are constantly working on them.

Most here fit somewhere between the two

Once you use a new MFD you won't want to use an Ipad, except for remoting the MFD! Better displays, better GPS, wide viewing angle, sunlight viewable, dim right down at night, night color selections, touch and buttons, etc. All the current MFDs have wifi built in, and an app to display and control the MFD from Ipad or Andriod. Good for lying in your bunk and checking what's happening on deck! You can still use Navionics charts if you wish, but Navico now only supply Cmap - which they own. Navionics is now owned by Garmin.

Halo Radars start at $2300, but the one I recommend is $3K - Halo 20+. Instant on/off, no warmup. Low current draw, Velocity tracking (any target approaching you is displayed in a different color), MARPA, Dual Display (effectively 2 radars in one, can have a short and long range display at the same time). Also has a power save mode, so it can start, for example every 5 mins, do 3 rotations, and if no targets, stop. If target present, stay on, alarm, whatever you wish. Full guard zone functions, AIS overlays, if using a suitable B&G VHF direct DSC calls to any AIS or DSC target on the MFD, etc etc

I'd sell the Evo gyro if you were to go to B&G, as it's cheaper to buy the AP unit as a kit - with a precision 9 solid state compass (includes rate, roll, pitch, yaw, and heave) than to buy individual components. Your existing radar is also pretty easily sold, and you might be surprised how much you get for it - I've a customer who had  a similar Raymarine vintage to yours, and it cost him $500 to go to a B&G radar, once he'd sold his on trademe!

Grey imports may not have a NZ warranty, and we should be very price competitive. Navico says we will match or better any genuine international prices...

    Ok next ?

Can I upgrade the MFDs now and use existing radar, course computer wind and depth etc and which MFD will fit in hole in panel and stainless box that E80s are now in ? Plus I’ve got navionics card for whole pacific, what will this work in or if buying new mfds just get new charts ?

  12. As above, a small piece of anything under a diaphragm will stop it lifting.

So bench test, see if it will suck water up a two metres of  tube out of a bucket, if not strip the pump, it would still work when flooded but not suck a vacuum

  13. Didn’t mention have digital radar (2015) and have a evo gyro that I was sold to integrate but doesn’t, still in the box.

So if I can keep the good bits will it all interface ?

Forward sonar and VHF etc not me

    Maybe next year

Hi Jon, take a look at what the new stuff does - lower power consumption, better displays, better steering etc .... Then make up your mind!

So your saying just save the money for the big upgrade,

So I’ve got two E80, wind with two displays autopilot ST7000 depth speed tri data display ais course computer electric drive on steering gearbox

How much of this is useable and what’s the ballpark number in SBD (standard boat dollars = $1k)
