I expected you both to end up last on corrected time. And yet you both came out mid fleet. Must have done some good catching up after that!
It was a winner until it wasn’t
Going south early after Piercy was a great move but getting from inside Colville channel to outside Mercury Islands was the killer. After that it was just how long it took is wiggle across the gulf

Unfortunately a sad end to this story - the boat broke up today and the debris is either on the bottom or in Matiatia Bay beach
Who would have thought we could get a cyclone at this time of year ?
must be climate change or something
This was always going to happen, they should have sent a barge out as soon as it grounded (harbour master that is)
there job is surely to look after the harbour ?
who pays, we all do, same with clearly abandoned boats on moorings. This isn’t a third world back water

Thanks! found it through hard to find books on its way now!
I have a had few good chats with Tony about his trip back from Fiji but I’m also really keen for a chat with the skipper of Nevenka about crossing the Tasman
Take beer and time, and also beer

Question
When does an grounded wreck become abandoned officially ?
-
Martin that’s clever for a cruising boat
wouldn’t work on a race boat that wants to peel headsails
-
Try clamping it in a vice and run a hacksaw through it
but don’t over tighten the vice
Maybe a new key but epoxy also sounds good
-
If your not looking at doing class regattas
buy the one that’s best setup that you can afford
motors are the biggest thing then standing rigging, you will spend more doing a boat up than buying one that’s done

out of interest what was the thinking behind having the day race for the first leg?
It’s a French thing, lots of the big shorthanded events there have a prologue
Thinking is a short race will keep turnaround time to a minimum as fleet will be closer so minimising chances of sailors getting infected between legs
Plus a one off race wasn’t what we originally planned ( I know 2 races isn’t 3 but it’s better than 1 )
If we’ve been too conservative then we apologise but our understanding is this can happen and we want to give everyone enough time to prepare.
Working on finalising courses at the moment, high probability that they will be somewhat triangular in shape

Excellent. Good to know I am not alone. Even if I was that day.
Was he also trying to inspect a rudder tube?
Not sure, keep an eye open for a Wright 11 called La Di Da

One day I will write up in the Stepping Out thread about the time I got wedged upside-down in a stern rope locker. With no-one else onboard. I thought I was going to die there...
Either your names Mike or I have someone you should meet. Picture Towson 32, stern lazarette, two legs waving in the air. Still makes me laugh thinking about it.

Thanks Jon that’s great news. Sorry to hear so many boats have had to drop out. Sure are challenging times.
any idea when the confirmed entries and their handi caps will be updated on the SSANZ site?
Soon, another week as we are just finalising SI’s
Poulito has been told they can enter the country on a sports exemption so are in the process of applying
Your end of the fleet is mostly unchanged
-
Our understanding is yes
We may need to watch numbers at briefing, stopovers and Prize givings
Fortunately we are at 43 entries so with race management we will be right on or just under 100 people
Biggest worry would be the reintroduction of regional boarders, no talk of this however so fingers crossed.
if we can sail but not across boarders then we will still run the event within the Akl boundaries in some form, is the backup plan anyhow.

Best storage I’ve seen for paper charts was on a wooden yacht with deck beams with two bunny cords fixed so charts stowed rolled up under cabin top
Says he who sailed fro Turkey to NZ via Panama without any paper charts.

We saw flying fish in Port Abercrombie in the first week of the year, blue water inside the barrier too which is not that normal, so where there’s flying fish there will be mahi

No, I’ve got a power point just below that’s powered by a 300W inverter, I also use it for phone charging etc
Old one was 24” and 12volt, replacement was over $800 and only one option as not a common size any more
Replaced with 32” smart tv $250 plus $100 inverter that I already had
-
Tell you the truth, I had similar issues
Ended up binning TV and replacing it with a smart tv with Netflix installed, I just hotspot tv off my phone now and it works
Probably an age thing

In Huse bay tonight
20 boats in the north end of channel, seen more in a winter weekend
I think most have gone home or are further a field
-
Mean while
North Harbour is practically empty

Left Barrier yesterday (it has emptied out to quite quiet)
Arrived Bottom End mid arvo, ManOwar was full but everything else was like a weekend outside holidays

Speaking of strange messages
I keep getting one or two targets showing in my target list of boats that are thousands of miles away, up to 8000nm
They are in range or I’d not pick them up, so either they are transmitting an incorrect position or my raymarine system is receiving it incorrectly
anyone else with this issue ?
Raymarine upgrade from 2008

I’ve got the same era Raymarine gear, all still going fine BUT, wondering if I should be buying cheaply this gear that’s being removed and replaced as spares or just save the money and put it towards the inevitable full replacement ?
