  1. Not often I agree with a man that sails a steel drum or a plywood box but today is that day

I'm always true North and north up on all devices, even paper charts

Your scenario re navigating with a compass bearing only works if you are exactly where you think you are, if your not then your compass bearings are all wrong

  3. A friend had one and with good sails it went really well in the club racing fleet

Most are only cruised so the sails are to match but well sailed with good rags you want be disappointed, faster than a T32 I'd say, plus heaps of room and a decent motor

They were mostly home built so quality will vary but for a cruiser of that size they would be hard to beat

Offshore ? It would depend on the boat and crew but plenty sail worse around the world.

  4. Don't think any leg is as tough as a S2H on average but what makes this a tough race is it's four races back to back and your two handed and generally on smaller yachts so I'd personally put this as the toughest regularly race race in this part of the world if not further a field

Well done to all that got to the start line as this is in it's self an achievement

And congrats to all that get around, how ever they do it.

  5. Zenith and Squealer decided not to start and head back to Nelson

Disregard their trackers as they have been switched off and removed from the boats

Celadon has retired and gone into Gisborne to wait out the weather

Jet has major engine problems so have suspended racing and are heading into Napier, not likely that they will resume, but they still have that option.

Wedgetail had to return to port prior to the start for prop shaft repairs and started late.

Reports from onboard range from crap to henus across the fleet but it's looking like the rich will get richer all the way to the finish

But only Blink and Wedgetail are still in the hunt for Div 1 as all others have swapped crew at some point

Great to see SF a div 3 boat kicking all the div 2 boats

  6. Cheers - Live streaming of the start again?!?

Only if your out on the water watching then it will be live and the rain will be streaming

Weathers looking good for the front end of the fleet for leg 4

But the timing is still changing with each update, and all the models are now mostly agreeing

  7. Waiting for them in Welly is getting painful

After getting up to check the tracker every two hours all night and now they are further away

Been for a look around the south coast this morning but can't see them as they have disappeared around the corner

Neil has it correct wind and current going the same way is giving them no apparent and the wind is really only in on the shore

They are running up the down escalator flat out going nowhere

But wait the westerly is on its way, they are trapped between two systems

Can someone do a zero to hero will be the big question now

  8. If you draw a line from the happy jacks to L barrier then on to C Rodney YNZ will let you run a race Cat 4

CC is Cat 3 as it goes around two Capes

We (SSANZ) have been working hard to either lower category rating or run races in areas that we can get away with lower category's

As for paper charts we have all but allowed yachts to not have then in the RNI as long as you have multi devices and multi forms of power

I'm picking in 3 years the next RNI will be all electronic if you wish to go that way

But it's really hard to argue against safety gear and it makes the organisers more liable if something goes wrong and we have removed something that was a requirement

  9. the grouping look pretty fair to me. evenish numbers in each div as well.  Nice work dark arts master.

Previously the range of the divisions was fixed but unfortunately we don't know who will enter at this point, which lead to only 3 yachts in div 1 last time.

Two of them turbo and one naturally aspirated

So this time we have gone for

    Div 1, top fuel

    Div 2, fast 40 somethings

Div 3, 35 or close enough family frighteners

    Div 4, classic Kiwis

There are a couple there that we had to fit as best we could but the goal was to get even competition within divisions as close as possible so anyone can win there division if they sail well enough plus with 4 legs in different conditions the best sailed Yacht just seems to rise to the top for some lucky reason.

  10. Forecast is looking slightly better this morning but still a bit slow

If your coming out on the water to watch the start please give the yachts plenty of room as with a incoming tide and little wind plus being two handed they are going to have enough on without dodging spectators

If you want a good view from on land then come out onto Devonport Wharf, lots of room but the Navy guns are very loud

You should be able to watch the start on the Wharf then walk up to north head to have the fleet sail past below you

  11. Depends on your boat type also

If your a sports or multi racer then I'd go super comfortable highend

If your cruising then I'd look at lifetime cost, we practically never wear ours (I sailed all the way back from Europe without putting one on) but some boats I wouldn't step foot on without wearing one

I'm guessing most will fall somewhere in between

  12. Jon, I thought there a RNZ pencilled in for 2018 at the moment? Do you mean to push this out to 2019? (Which would be good...)

Yes, I lost a year somewhere, must have been off sailing around the world, either physically or mentally

Because it's M2O in 18 if we had the numbers for 19 we would look at it, wouldn't be 20 as that's RNI year again

We would want 12 paid entries six months out to make RNZ happen, but ya never know what will come out of this RNI, if we get another 2011 race it will make it hard but if it's all down wind at 15kts it could be different, but then again 2011 lead into the 2012 RNZ, so disappointment can lead to commitment also.

  13. Ok so now that my comments on the other race has been pushed into this thread I'll add to them.

We (SSANZ) don't take expressions of interest and promote them as entries

We open our long races and you pay your money to secure a spot, which we limit in number, yes some come and go but it builds commitment early on.

Other clubs put up names of boats that are distant possiblities in the hope it will attract others but imho all it does is attract other distant possiblities

Also I wasn't meaning the whole project is as difficult to do a RNI but comparatively the sailing two handed with a lee shore for 1200nm is just just as difficult if not more so then you compare the yachts that come from the central region that do this twice.

Consequently we will run another Round New Zealand race as soon as we get enough commitment

Probably not 2017 by current indications but possibly 2018

This race is much harder than any race to the islands, what with sailing into the southern ocean and 2500nm, sure it may be in 4 legs but leg 2 from Mangonui is almost as far as either Fiji or Tonga

There is a reason why only 14 yachts have ever raced around NZ

As for cost I've heard of one yacht spending 60k on just sails for the RNI

The cost difference between Cat 2 and Cat 1 is hundreds not thousand
