  1. I've got both a window and a extinguisher with a heat activated head on in installed in the compartment

Bloody cheap ass production boats come with everything these days

  2. In the 2012 Round NZ race the question of a system developing into something was asked of a short, round, white haired weatherman at Mangonui prior to leg two from there to Stewart Is

He said that there was less than 1% chance of it being a problem

We were hit by a weather bomb 300nm west of cook straight (15m swells)

I now run Predictwind offshore app from my Irrid go

I still think a system could develop after departure but hopefully I could watch the raw data and change course if it was coming my way but that doesn't mean it wouldn't change to follow me.

Offshore sailing is still safer than driving on the motorway or even the retirement homes, people die in them every day believe it or not.

  3. Just rewatched today's race and my uneducated guess is that they were trying either different rudders or a different rudder setup

Commentators said they were using the same rudders but I believe there isn't a limit to the number of rudders so how could they tell from looking at the screen and I'm sure they are all trialling different setups or at least the ones that are going to be n the hunt

  4. Sorry Myjane, just a windup, but your the first to bite, as floor boards need to be fix down they will only float with the yacht.

The issue they had was with a seal at the top of the rudder stock not being properly installed when the bearing where replaced, they only found out once they got out into a 4m following sea and 40kts

So they decided to come back and get it fixed properly as they were off for 5 months mostly to Tonga where hauling out isn't an option, turned out the guy in Opua could replace it with the boat still in the water but I guess they didn't what the stress of being away and knowing it wasn't right.

  5. Frank

    Firstly buyer be ware

Most of this range were built to go straight into the charter market

This is a good thing as they are designed to be easily sailed by many

The down side is they are easily sailed by many

So if you can find one that's well looked after and hasn't been used as a bumper boat then they are capable enough for cruising but they weren't ever designed to high end.

  6. Back out of the house deal

Tell them you have a boat in your waters or some suchlikes

You can add two rooms to your existing house by buying Tigre, and they are mobile rooms to boot

  7. Ok, update

    I was wrong !

the immigration clearing officer now requires a new cat 1 cert if you clear out and have to turn back before they will clear you out again

A friend left on the weekend then decided to turn back as they had a floating floorboard problem.

But for $20 the YNZ inspector wrote out a new one and they will depart this weekend

  8. Cat 1 is no more difficult than it's ever been

There is often a flavour of the season as to who's getting tough on what, In some ways technology has made some things easier eg sat coms as apposed to ssb

You would need a stability index but I'm sure Allan can draw you a pretty picture

And be happy to spend at least 10 days getting to the islands, but then again we are all in a rush to get there but wish the trip had lasted longer when it's over (well I am anyway)

  9. For many years I had a 10mm floating line about twice the normal towing length with a large loop in each end but It was through a small block shackled to the bow of the dinghy

When we towed it any distance or in away sea state we we simply attached one loop to each aft cleat on the yacht

The dinghy then found its happy place to follow, plus it self tacked

The floating line was good as it didn't go anywhere here the prop

But, there's always a but, the floating line was great at wedging between the rudder and the hull which was a bitch to get out, probably if we had gone up or down a size this wouldn't have happened, maybe ?

Current dinghy I've just got an one piece of 10mm line which we tie off to the centre line on the stern.

Endlessly adjustable and self tacks from centre line, but does need to be shortened up when anchoring to keep it clear from the prop.

We have a wide boat with a wide transom now so think all I'd do differently is add 3 net floats about every metre form the dinghy bow

If I had a narrower or pinched stern then I'd go back to the double system we had before
