Anyone know of a cheapish flow detector locally ?
My water maker overflows the tank when it's full over the side so I'd like to put a sensor on the overflow tube (12mm I think) so I can wire it to a small led light rather than have to go up on the foredeck to check
First world problem I know, but I'm just worried about filling the ocean with fresh water ;-d

I think you should all stay home and safe
I love night sailing and it's a lot easier if your all safe at home
No matter how dark it is you can always see something
But heavy rain can be difficult, best to have a helmsman that just helms and a seperate person to navigate but with a good auto helm you can do both, my present boat has radar, I thought it was a waste of time until I had it

Pull the halyard out the bottom
Be careful it doesn't tangle on the way down
Motor over to mast gantry at PH then winch your assistant up on the gantry wire at the bottom end of the tide ( you have a lifting keel ?)
Then either a thin line or even fishing line with a weight on the end that you can push over the sheave then lower it until you can fish it out of the slot ( piece of rigging wire or similar with hook bent into end ) riggers use a dozen or more nuts threaded onto the line with stopper knot either side
Tape thin line to halyard end and pull back up and over the top, make sure all other halyards are tight so you don't get any twists and tape line so it lines up nicely with the halyard and then it won't catch
I've taken a few masts out here on up to 38 footers

We did this s in 2014 as we couldn't find a kiwi yacht around 50' that wasn't either close to $1m or 4-500k but 30 years old and needed the same spent on it
We would have preferred a real kiwi yacht but they cost so much to build as a one off that we all think we should get 90% back after 10 years which still wasn't affordable for us
We are happy with what we have for what we spent, had a great trip back and would do it again tomorrow
Won't know if it was fiscally positive until the day we sell which isn't in the near future, but it did allow us to do it within our budget.
So it was either euro trash or not at all
One thing I'd suggest is don't consider ex charter yachts, there are plenty of private vessels available, sure they are a little dearer but well worth the extra
Twosail if your thinking 10 years out I wouldn't rush, there is a lot more correction yet to come in the NZ market, our last yacht has probably dropped a third since we sold in 2014 looking at current market and probably hasn't hit bottom yet
It really comes down to what you want to do, if you sail it back yourself then you can claim 10% depreciation per year but if you pay someone or ship it then you pay gst/duty on the total cost including all fees crew costs or shipping and commissioning
So I'd say there's nothing in it cost wise re buying a kiwi yacht and refitting it or buying new import here.
I've always sold my yachts for more than I bought them, but never more than I've spent on them
Euro trash will be no different but I wouldn't trade the experience with the family and friends of sailing back for any money.

Yes raz88 I can't really see screaming kids fitting in at the party we had at smokehouse last year
-
We have always invited you to bring your extra's to the after match, we had a few get a ride out and sail back 3 or 4 up last time
Maybe we can have some sort of a mothership arrangement to deliver extra crew out, possibly cruisers that don't wish to race but are keen to be involved or even them stinkpot things ?
Or even ferry out, sail back ?

We are thinking about this

Not often I agree with a man that sails a steel drum or a plywood box but today is that day
I'm always true North and north up on all devices, even paper charts
Your scenario re navigating with a compass bearing only works if you are exactly where you think you are, if your not then your compass bearings are all wrong

Ok all that wished they were sailing and not just checking the tracker every 30min here is your chance.
http://ssanz.co.nz/events/index.html?id=155
Three different courses that you choose not limited to the size of your yacht
Only limitation is you need Cat 3 for longhaul, with Shorthaul and Cruising Cat 4
Great destination finish with beach party to follow plus rally home.

A friend had one and with good sails it went really well in the club racing fleet
Most are only cruised so the sails are to match but well sailed with good rags you want be disappointed, faster than a T32 I'd say, plus heaps of room and a decent motor
They were mostly home built so quality will vary but for a cruiser of that size they would be hard to beat
Offshore ? It would depend on the boat and crew but plenty sail worse around the world.

Don't think any leg is as tough as a S2H on average but what makes this a tough race is it's four races back to back and your two handed and generally on smaller yachts so I'd personally put this as the toughest regularly race race in this part of the world if not further a field
Well done to all that got to the start line as this is in it's self an achievement
And congrats to all that get around, how ever they do it.

Zenith and Squealer decided not to start and head back to Nelson
Disregard their trackers as they have been switched off and removed from the boats
Celadon has retired and gone into Gisborne to wait out the weather
Jet has major engine problems so have suspended racing and are heading into Napier, not likely that they will resume, but they still have that option.
Wedgetail had to return to port prior to the start for prop shaft repairs and started late.
Reports from onboard range from crap to henus across the fleet but it's looking like the rich will get richer all the way to the finish
But only Blink and Wedgetail are still in the hunt for Div 1 as all others have swapped crew at some point
Great to see SF a div 3 boat kicking all the div 2 boats

Only if your out on the water watching then it will be live and the rain will be streamingCheers - Live streaming of the start again?!?
Weathers looking good for the front end of the fleet for leg 4
But the timing is still changing with each update, and all the models are now mostly agreeing
-
Waiting for them in Welly is getting painful
After getting up to check the tracker every two hours all night and now they are further away
Been for a look around the south coast this morning but can't see them as they have disappeared around the corner
Neil has it correct wind and current going the same way is giving them no apparent and the wind is really only in on the shore
They are running up the down escalator flat out going nowhere
But wait the westerly is on its way, they are trapped between two systems
Can someone do a zero to hero will be the big question now
-
Bluefin tuna actually
Can't wait to taste it
Looking like another DNF
-
Are Mack and Tom motoring, what's with the straight line track??
Marlin fishing actually

If you draw a line from the happy jacks to L barrier then on to C Rodney YNZ will let you run a race Cat 4
CC is Cat 3 as it goes around two Capes
We (SSANZ) have been working hard to either lower category rating or run races in areas that we can get away with lower category's
As for paper charts we have all but allowed yachts to not have then in the RNI as long as you have multi devices and multi forms of power
I'm picking in 3 years the next RNI will be all electronic if you wish to go that way
But it's really hard to argue against safety gear and it makes the organisers more liable if something goes wrong and we have removed something that was a requirement
-
the grouping look pretty fair to me. evenish numbers in each div as well. Nice work dark arts master.
Previously the range of the divisions was fixed but unfortunately we don't know who will enter at this point, which lead to only 3 yachts in div 1 last time.
Two of them turbo and one naturally aspirated
So this time we have gone for
Div 1, top fuel
Div 2, fast 40 somethings
Div 3, 35 or close enough family frighteners
Div 4, classic Kiwis
There are a couple there that we had to fit as best we could but the goal was to get even competition within divisions as close as possible so anyone can win there division if they sail well enough plus with 4 legs in different conditions the best sailed Yacht just seems to rise to the top for some lucky reason.

How are the division splits worked?
its a "Dark Art"
if I told you I'd have to kill you
or maybe I just make them up as I go along ?
The thing to note is the major trophies are by division not overall
-

Ok we have decided to allow you to take your kids if your doing the cruising Division
"In the nature of this being a fun event we have decided to allow children to sail with there parents in the Cruising division provided they don't provide any assistance "
