A stagnant effort to save the Hauraki Gulf - now to be salvaged with a Government intervention - could have been done better, an official inquiry has found.

The Cawthron Institute has released this, they have been funded and this is the public statement.
Biofouling – build-up of marine organisms on surfaces submerged in the sea – causes major financial and ecological issues for most maritime industries. When surfaces are covered with biofouling: fuel usage and greenhouse gas emissions dramatically increase for ships and other vessels; underwater structures deteriorate faster; and biosecurity risks are exacerbated if invasive species are present. Antifouling coatings are the primary tool to counteract biofouling but most leach toxins into the marine environment. Active and looming bans on current antifouling products necessitate innovative new approaches to effectively control biofouling without harming the environment in the process. Biocide-free foul-release approaches continue to be developed but they are only applicable to a defined subset of the market – industry needs better biocides to be developed.
This project will rationally design and synthesise a 'smart' antifouling biocide using a combination of cutting-edge medicinal chemistry approaches and pragmatic biological 'ground-truthing'. We aim to produce a fit-for-purpose 'smart' biocide that is:
potent against the range of problematic biofouling organisms when applied to artificial surfaces in the sea;
benign against marine life, including biofouling organisms on natural surfaces, if released into the environment;
and cost-effectively synthesized at an industrial scale.
Designing an entirely new class of 'smart' biocide from the ground up will place New Zealand at the forefront of antifouling technology development. Formulating the 'smart' biocide in traditional antifouling coating systems or novel biomaterials will protect existing manufacturing in New Zealand and develop new high-value export opportunities. The wide-scale availability of an effective yet safe antifouling formulation will improve productivity and social licence to operate for end users, whilst reducing environmental contamination and biosecurity risks in accordance with Māori principles of Kaitiakitanga.

Some of the Taranaki boats are already in town, stayed on after Labour Weekend.

Info came from a NZ Defence Force press release. No yacht details

That sounds similar to how ours was setup, 2 tracks.

he Royal New Zealand Navy’s offshore patrol vessel HMNZS Wellington has helped a yacht that had sent a mayday signal after drifting into rocks off the east coast of the Northland region this morning.
Lieutenant Commander Damian Gibbs, the Commanding Officer of Wellington, said the yacht sent a distress call about 7:20am after it crashed on rocks near Poor Knights Islands.
Wellington, which is currently in Northland for training and a scheduled port visit to Whangarei this weekend, was about 14 kilometres from the yacht’s location when it received the distress call.
“We made the best speed towards the yacht’s location. As soon as we reached the area, we launched one of the ship’s sea boats to help tow the yacht away from the rocks and stayed until it was able to get underway,” Lieutenant Commander Gibbs said.

Is the issue with the traveler created while sailing or at anchor.
If the the latter, there are some good options around for removable travellers..... Drop the pick , remove the traveller an enjoy your cockpit.

Agree it is an interesting read ...

2018 Rotoiti Classic 10 November
For this years Rotoit Classic the courses have been selected to allow for more corners and tactical decisions with some different landmarks chosen to send the fleet around. We are offering short, medium and long haul formats and naturally allowing for some after race socialising.
The 'Classic' course will come in three lengths, Short, Medium and Longhaul.The small boat course is designed to allow smaller boats to compete and have a cruising feel to it.
They will do one lap of the lake. The medium caters for the mid size trailer yachts and will be based on two laps of the lake.
Larger trailer yachts, other approved yachts and trailer tri's will go further (afield) completing three laps of the lake to really test the endurance of the competitors.
Entry open to Trailer Yachts, trailer tri’s and other approved yachts.
A Division NZTYA 0.860> 3 Laps Lake Rotoiti (about 50 miles)
B Division NZTYA 0.859Lake Rotoiti (about 34 miles)
C Division Open to all trailer yachts 1 Lap Lake Rotoiti (about 17 miles)
