  1. I have a Farr940 (N30) on a trailer kept in hard stand in part to avoid the marina issue. We have also taken up short term marina hire for convenience when we want to sail an area for a month or two, remembering we are land locked.

  2. This has come out from Defense HQ:

The New Zealand Defence Force (NZDF) has found the New Zealand-owned yacht that made a distress call at dawn off the coast of Fiji.

Air Commodore Darryn Webb, the Air Component Commander, said a Royal New Zealand Air Force P-3K2 Orion aircraft spotted the yacht SV Jungle beached on the reef at Tuvana-I-Ra atoll approximately 425 kilometres southeast of the Fijian capital of Suva.

“The yacht’s four crew members had abandoned the yacht and are safe and well on the atoll,” Air Commodore Webb said.

“They used the yacht’s radio to establish communications with the Orion crew.”

Air Commodore Webb said the Orion’s crew were now trying to contact other vessels nearby to rescue the four yachtsmen.

“We are delighted with the successful outcome of this search and rescue operation. Well done to all those involved.”

There are three locals living on the atoll, and there are no vessels expected to visit the area in the next seven days.

Crew members of the 18-metre yacht sent text messages to their relatives overnight to inform them that their vessel’s backstay was broken, affecting their ability to sail. The last text message was received from the yacht around 2am this morning.

  3. I'm involved in numerous remote data collection sites (seismic, GPS etc) and we design for a min 7:1 ratio. That is if the site draws 1A, we have solar that is rated for at least 7A of output. If its a poor site (hill that is often in cloud etc we up it to 10:1).

Our panels are fixed and we are looking at the system going all year (we Tx continuously).

Only a boat in a marina with the panels orientated similar would meet the same efficiency we achieve; anything under way, at anchor etc would be less efficient. More efficiency would be gained if the boat in a marina tracked the sun.

Another way to look at this is a well set up system (fixed orientated set of panels) will deliver over/about 15% of its rated out put over a year (often in winter the battery voltages can get low; lots of amber lights show on the monitoring software after 7-10 days of rain).

Solar is a great aid, just so long as you understand its capability. I've spoken to many panel owners and they often perceive its producing the 'rated output' (or close to) while the sun shines.

  4. Quick up date ... we used the topping lift to hoist the main, worked ok for the couple of months we had the boat on the Gulf.

Now the mast is down, I used the topping lift to pull two tails through; one to pull the topping lift back and the second to restore the main halyard. Just need to put mast back up now.

  5. As a consequence of our shake down sail and over nighter we have ended up with the main halyard pulled inside the mast. Forgot the knot when putting mast up and while at anchor over night the rocking pumped the halyard !

The boat is a Farr 940 (Noelex 30), so relatively light tapered mast. There is a 6 mm topping lift that goes to the top. I estimate the halyard is 3-4 m inside the mast.

    I feel the recovery (via a trip up the mast) is outside of my comfort zone, so are looking for advise and help on this one;

    1) How would you do this (trip up mast, pushing it back in), parking next to a cherry picker or travel hoist etc (how do riggers do this ?)

    2)  Who does this type of work in Auckland area (Boat is at Pine Harbour)

Open to suggestions and advise ....

    Thanks

  6. Hi

Agree with the tardis comment! Sure is after a 6.5 m trailer yacht.

She is normally kept on the trailer in a hard stand on Lake Rotoiti (www.boptys.net) it is possible to launch her single handed. The two of us can get the Mast up and down, due too a very well engineered A frame system for getting it done. Our plans are to have her in a marina for 2-3 months each year and back on the lake the rest of the time. Have had her on the lake for past year, gave us time to learn how to sail her, reefing, manovering etc.

We got her from Taupo, the national home of 30's.

Had a Noelex 30 for years, back in the day when there was even class racing. Great boat, a real Tardis in terms of size down below, Not really a real trailer yacht - the rig took a bit to raise and would be more suited to use as per Island Time - ie left by a ramp fully rigged. Great with young kids - anchored in about 2 feet of water while they played around boat. Great Gulf cruiser/racer and could foot it with Young 88's on a good day. Never see them in Auckland now - most I think are on Taupo or in Aussie.
