  1. We might actually make the start line on time for the 50. We spent a few hours sorting through all the old sails that came with the new boat last night...hoping for a bit less breeze for the 50 miler as the oldest main that we used to sail some of the 100 course went into the skip afterwards....

  2. The Farr 36 canter? Awesome, that looks a really cool boat!

    Yep should be a fun ride....well maybe not upwind in big breeze but we’re kind of used to that. And maybe a bit wetter all round than we are used to.

     

    I’m heading over to Newcastle on Friday to pack up the boat with Tom, the previous owner. It has its own shipping cradle which is helpful. The boat leaves the marina on a truck on Monday and is due in Auckland around the third week of July. A few jobs to do before she’s in the water not least of which is figuring out how to put it all back together. It’s a bit tight to make Race 2 but we’ll have a crack at it.

     

    She’s now registered in NZ and awaiting PHRF, not sure we’ll like it tho.

     

    The boat has been used largely as a day sailer the past few years so needs to be spec’d back up for coastal stuff. There are a heap of spare parts but we don’t really know what it comes with except we do know there is a set of stanchions and lifelines which is handy.

     

    The boat does have lifelines across the transom now - Tom says he had to fit them because he kept losing people off the back...

  3. A mate of mine has a 40' cat and is looking for a Volvo 120 S-E sail-drive with a ratio of 2.47 – 1. Apparently this is an unusual ratio, and no longer available new - which is unfortunate as he needs to match the other unit. He is faced with having to purchase a new matching set .

     

    He is getting plenty of professional advice, he has also located at least one used unit overseas. We are just trying to cast the net wider to see if anyone in NZ has one available.

  4. In our experience Propspeed is by a long distance the best solution. Provided it is correctly applied. Regular use will prolong its life. We have seen up to and exceeding 3 years lifespan and 1-2 years is routine. If it touches anything firm (eg hands, weed, sand or driftwood) there is a likelihood it will not last as the surfaces and especially the edges can tear or rub through. If this occurs the effectiveness of the product will degenerate. Our failure rate would be less than 1%. Again you must prep and apply it carefully and correctly.

    You might be right on the MSM comment but totally disagree with this bit, I’m currently commodore of a very small Akl yacht club (just 60 families) and also have been involved in many other clubs and events over the years - I cannot speak highly enough of the support we get. Often we don’t need to ask, it’s offered. The YNZ people I see most of like Angus, Andrew, Kelly, Raynor, Wayne and Kim (especially Kim!) are incredibly interested in what we do, plugged in to whats happening and helpful.

     

    Maybe it’s because the clubs and associations I’ve been involved in (including Olympic and NZ classes) have worked to keep the lines of communication open.

     

    Enjoying tracking the RNZ and it’s got me fired up and looking forward to doing another RNI, hopefully next year.

  6. For Bay Week, we’ll (Ross 40) be in Island Racing again this year - already entered and have been put into B this year which will make a nice change. In the past we have had a good mix of cruiser racer type boats in A with us at the smaller end. There have been two Ross 40’s in A for I think 2 of the last 3 years with Urban Cowboy and ourselves.

     

    We don’t bother with the Windward Leeward racing as we feel we really need a more polished crew, there is too much potential for things to go wrong in big breeze as we found at the Jack Tar a few years ago. We tend to sail with friends and a few young sailors - Passage is a pretty chilled and fun affair. Not to mention spectacular.

     

    In terms of pace we are behind the E12’s (eg Bullrush) and newer Ross 12 (PBF) but we can generally match the 40 up to 45’ late model import production boats (cruiser racer types) around a track unless there’s a lot of breezy upwind or tight reaching - when the waterline and extra beam really come into play. Lawless would be the exception, she is quite a bit quicker.

     

    It does make for a big bunch of closely matched boats in the racing we do.

  7. What is different about Back Chat?

     

    Just the bulb and maybe the keel fin I think, someone with better knowledge will be able to confirm - it might be the same as the one on Kick (that was what I understood).  Later NZ keel upgrades have the skinny 'T Keel'/bulb like High Voltage, Pretty Woman, Second Nature and Gale Force which I recall are all pretty similar.  Spearhead has a different keel, it was done in Australia.

  8. At one point Wellington had a heap of 1050's; Backchat, Chain Reaction, Gale Force, Cutting Edge, Rockstar to go with an even bigger fleet of Y11's.

     

    Picking up on Mark's post earlier about overseas boats, E1050 Crocodile Rock is in NZ, she lives at either HMB or Pine Harbour Marinas and looking very nice.  She doesn't race any more.

     

    There is also a Sandringham (VIC) based cruiser version "Unique" that is (or was) listed with Sundance Marine in Australia

  9. Kick’s builder/first owner Ian Harvey and plenty of other guys who sailed on her are still around the BBYC area (Ian may be up in the islands on his yacht by now). Easy to put you in touch with them. You know about the cockpit mods, also the keel was quite different to the standard jandal (maybe the same as backchat?) and I believe the mast is taller than all the other boats. The boat needs the runners on to perform.

     

    Plenty of info around on the others, there have been lots that have had keel mods and various prod and square top setups.

     

    With Fineline, Spearhead and Kick imported back here now, I wonder if there are any more in Aus.

  10. Sail it. If you can prove it was exported, there will be no gst or duty for it to return...

    I am not sure this is correct (unless it’s the same owner bringing it in who originally exported it). My understanding is, new owner = GST payable (regardless if GST has already been paid once). If it was built and sailed from new in NZ, and you can prove that, there should be no duty.

  11. I think there might still be a couple of other entries out there.  Maybe including one that went around last time.

     

    In 3 days time it will be a year since we started the RNI.  Maybe the unpleasant bits of that race (not that there were very many) are fading a bit in my memory...

     

    It also occurred to me today that we would not have wanted to be off NZ's west coast this week.....that very same thought was also had by my RNI & potential RNZ co-skipper!  And probably by a few others on the entry list!

    We used an Iridium Go with an external aerial mounted on the pushpit for this year's RNI race (Provincial Cowboy).  It was paired to two iPhones.  I highly recommend it as a simple solution.  The only downside is the download speed as of course we are all used to 3G and 4G.  The texting was great - we used that for all our position reports and it worked well.  If you are using Predictwind offshore for weather downloads, it's important to know exactly what files you need and don't download others.  

     

    Important to spend a bit of time getting familiar with it and the apps beforehand but all quite intuitive.

     

    We had the unlimited data package on monthly account and only ran it for the months of the event.

     

    We had a charged up prepay SatphonePro as a backup in the grab bag and never needed it.

    Came across this one a while back on the H28 Facebook page.. thought it looked pretty good. Maybe the one that Boatworks is talking about.

     

    Yes I think that's the one. looks like Nelson so location makes sense, although the windows are different (bigger) than I remember - maybe the other one built that was mentioned in the advert.
