Thanks for the links. That hard dodger looks pretty smart and pretty much what I had in mind.
At the moment, mulling over (1) sewing a replacement sunbrella dodger (2) making a solid one a la photos (3) selling boat.
I think this is the mould H28 hard dodger we were referring to:

Thanks for the advice, will keep all that in mind when it is time to purchase one
We used an Iridium Go with an external aerial mounted on the pushpit for this year's RNI race (Provincial Cowboy). It was paired to two iPhones. I highly recommend it as a simple solution. The only downside is the download speed as of course we are all used to 3G and 4G. The texting was great - we used that for all our position reports and it worked well. If you are using Predictwind offshore for weather downloads, it's important to know exactly what files you need and don't download others.
Important to spend a bit of time getting familiar with it and the apps beforehand but all quite intuitive.
We had the unlimited data package on monthly account and only ran it for the months of the event.
We had a charged up prepay SatphonePro as a backup in the grab bag and never needed it.

The boat's at Half Moon Bay Marina and will be headed to WH to live, I will ask him to update when I see him. There is also one in Wellington now, Loco - also shipped over

Came across this one a while back on the H28 Facebook page.. thought it looked pretty good. Maybe the one that Boatworks is talking about.
Yes I think that's the one. looks like Nelson so location makes sense, although the windows are different (bigger) than I remember - maybe the other one built that was mentioned in the advert.
Here's the link to that page,..looks promising: https://www.facebook.com/search/top/?q=H28%20Yacht%20Owners%20Association%3A%20New%20Zealand%20dodger

If you are considering building a hard dodger as an option, I saw a H28 hard dodger mould advertised a couple of months ago on Trademe - it passed in. The auction has not been relisted but here is a link to the cached version. From memory it looked good shape-wise, but could have done with a little more care around the windows profile and the method of attachment - which is easier than changing the mould. Could be a good answer if you can somehow track down the seller to see if he/she still has it..

EDIT - According to YNZ, Jungle is an Oyster 61 and according to Stuff is aground at Tuvana-I-Ra and damaged

Great thread Mark and one I am interested in as I own Provincial Cowboy. Having spent a couple of years figuring out how to sail the boat in various conditions we have a pretty good handle on speed and weaknesses versus other types of similar size boats.
We were fortunate that the boat came with a deeper keel and bulb and had also had work done to move chainplates aft and sweep the spreaders. I know what some of the other R40's have faced when changed keels and it's hard to justify.
It's been really rewarding, we have had a lot of fun and a bit of success for a fraction of the cost of buying and running a new raceboat, and I for one would love to see more of the older boats out there raced, the SSANZ series is a perfect way to do this, starting in the no extras divisions. The boat was perfect for the RNI (although I would not want to understate the preparation and cost we put in for that one race) and there are a heap of other similar boats around NZ that would be equally suited, if that's your ambition - it was mine.
Having said that I totally get the marina and other cost of ownership issues. Personally we won't ever be a candidate for a dedicated race boat, although I like the thought of doing so, the ability to cruise our boat in summer and race it through winter is great and helps justify things.
In terms of racing all these different boats together you just have to accept that PHRF under it's current structure cannot possibly handicap the boats equitably through a complete range of conditions using a single number and that there is an element of luck involved in winning as well as obviously sailing well. I have heard some talk of corinthian type divisions and maybe that is a way to encourage boats back out onto the racetrack.
Australia does have some boats that look good to bring over, some would be repatriated home. But the extra costs including GST/Duty do usually make this prohibitive. There is also an Australian-built E12 headed to Napier shortly which was pretty cheap.
Anyway, I've just been appointed to CIORC and so I am interested in hearing people's thoughts on how to address frustrations and barriers, support the fleets and grow numbers if possible, bearing in mind the huge variety of boats out there.
cheers

The sat phone we had organised for the white island race doesn't seem to be taking any charge at the moment. Anyone got a sat phone or even just an iridium battery or charger we can borrow for the race? We will know by the morning if our phone is OK. Should have checked it earlier!
Josh, try charging it with the 12volt charger - there is apparently a fault with the software for some phones that prevents the 230v charger working unless you update the firmware. Mine had the same issue.

Flowcoat? - NZ Fireglass Supplies in Morrin Road, Panmure/Glen Innes - open Saturday's I think.
Very friendly, especially the big bird....

Yep. She's been here for a few weeks. Very nice boat. Lives on a newly laid mooring off Glendowie Boating Club. Friendly owner, Paul, lives nearby. If you PM me I think I can put you in touch.

Lots of interesting info, especially given I was only trying to stir a little trash talk between Smithy and Boatworks. Should probably try that more often, 930s next perhaps.
Anyone know anything on Paddy Wagon in the states, has an ORR cert disp of 5,667kg
Haha we don't need any excuse to trash talk. Paddy Wagon was on the market a while back, I have a set of polars that I was sent over from a previous crew member - we haven't gotten around to comparing them to ours. IIRC she has an older style keel and rudder. Once again a lot of people spoke highly of sailing on her. Was last for sale for around $USD85k. Photos of Paddy Wagon below:
Also Jesse James is (or was) for sale, I think she is at Gulf Harbour: http://gulfgroup.co.nz/displayboat.php?list_code=9480

According to PHRF this new bulb will make PC and the Marshall more or less the same weight. PC has not been weighed since we have owned her but we are operating off the existing PHRF measured weight she was shown at when we bought her. Since that time we haven't made any changes that would markedly affect that either way. If anything she might be a bit heavier due mostly to a much stronger and heavier boom. I would like to weigh PC on some accurate scales some time just out of curiosity.
PC turned 30 years old on December. Despite their age they are great boats to race, cruise and own, they are quite tweaky especially upwind and have strengths and weaknesses. Of course the new keels will have improved their performance since the original designs were launched. It's amazing how many people come up and reminisce about some great times on a Ross 40!
We have enjoyed racing Marshall on a few rare occasions but also Smithy and Philstar have sailed with us a lot on PC so we compare notes a lot.
We all think Urban Cowboy is a little quicker downwind and we have had some great battles against them too. According to PHRF she has longer main luff (15.9 vs 16.5 - but that seems to be in dispute) and also has a square top.
It will be really interesting to see how the Marshall performs, the 2m prod will be very good we think, providing a more balanced broad reaching setup. The new keel bulb is much more streamlined than PC but the ML keel has 600mm less draft and also 50kg lighter.
Satellite Spy is more tricked up than all of us with a taller, carbon rig and new keel so we expect her to be a bit quicker. According to PHRF the Spy is 6150kg - 350kg heavier than PC which is odd as Spy is reputedly a lot lighter than the others - so not sure I believe all the weights are correct!
Anyway the Marshall is in the shed at Boatspray this week and Smithy is now back at work overseas for a few weeks so we do have an opportunity for some special "tuning" before delivering her back to her berth!

Had a look at the mods today. The boat is looking great. The new PHRF should be quite something
And smithy, it's "shepherd".....

470 lads now promoted from a provisional 11th overall into 9th (and make the medal race) due to protests upheld elsewhere....well done YNZ, all crews in top 10
Can't believe the Nacra ARG (Gold) crew did not get protested by Jury or other teams for ignoring the umpires call against them for a penalty turn following incident at final top mark - they finally did the turn halfway down the run. NZL crew a bit unlucky there ....great result regardless

Provincial Cowboy SSANZ 60.
SSANZ Race 1 2016. Not a great day for us really. Plenty of wind forecast so we reefed before the start and decided to be cautious. As a result we weren't particularly quick for the first reach out past Motutapu and run down towards Rakino. At this stage we were in close company with Lawless, Whitebait, Activator and a couple of other boats. I thought it was too dangerous to rely on the autohelm in all the big wakes where we could have easily hit someone so we aborted the hoist of a gennaker for what was a short run. Again a bit costly as we couldn't bridge the gap to Nosaka (who sailed really well all day) and the other bunch just ahead. Josh and Damon got shafted here, parked for 5 minutes in their own little hole under Rakino while no one else seemed to really stop. Next we broke the slide off the mainsail headboard which made for a very weird mainsail setup and which was a bit concerning. Pressed on but kept the mainsheet load down. Then broke the tiller extension after Shag Island which led to a big broach and a few dramas trying to lash something up. Also busted the main hatch cover somehow in that lie down, not sure how that happened really. Anyway, after sorting that out, we overlaid Shearer Rock in a big way and let a few boats through as we came in hot and low. Then a tangled sock retriever line on the drop...sigh. Just made sure we got home after that, passed Titanium around Rakino which was nice. Finally shook out the reef and held them off down the finish as they came up behind under a nice little FRO. In between all the dramas it was a good days yachting. Finally after the finish we got a rope round the prop (the bloody kite sheet came unclipped from the bow somehow, didn't see it in the dark - a trap for young players that!) after the finish and had a nice tow home from the very nice and efficient Coastguard folks! No sail damage other than the slide and nothing major so we'll just sort the other stuff out and move on.... Thanks SSANZ.

From RAYC "Just a quick heads up. Miss Scarlet notified Maritime Operations Center at 0745 that they have broken their forestay. NOK have been advised. Their intention is to continue to Fiji. More to follow."
Also
"Itchy Feet has been in email contact with their NOK. All is well, they are in rough weather and will continue their course for another day, and as we suspected point their bow at Fiji after the front. More to follow."

SSANZ 2019 Round New Zealand Race

I think there might still be a couple of other entries out there. Maybe including one that went around last time.
In 3 days time it will be a year since we started the RNI. Maybe the unpleasant bits of that race (not that there were very many) are fading a bit in my memory...
It also occurred to me today that we would not have wanted to be off NZ's west coast this week.....that very same thought was also had by my RNI & potential RNZ co-skipper! And probably by a few others on the entry list!
